Sheesh, this is awful!! Not just sloppy, but at 1:53 JP Jones launches into the rising bass riff before the song even gets there. You always wanna love the Zep, but this is proof they were human--in fact they could suck.
too much phaser + not the greatest Jimmy performance= less than ideal outcome, but fuck it's zeppelin so who fuckin cares, it still kicks my ass...that solo best ever, the phrasing is insane
Yeah Bonzo looks heavy here. Quite a difference to the Bonzo of Royal Albert Hall '70 - a lean vision in a red singlet top tearing into We're Gonna Groove like an animal.
yeah this is pretty bad. I have a bootleg from just a month before this where they played at the forum and they rocked the fuck out of achilles, it blows this one to smitehreens. i listened to that shit all summer long in 2004 after finding in the closet of my room in the new house we moved into.
I was 14 at this show, the Kingdome was horrible sounding but it was such an awesome event to be at. $10.00 per ticket festival seating for all three levels but you had to stay at the level your ticket was numbered for. I'll never forget the show and still have my ticket stub!
They were very professional. However, Robert Plant gyrating his crotch in those azure spandex pants is making me feel a little bit sick. It isn't so much a song as some kind of invocation to god knows what deity. Too ugly for the pagan gods, there's too many bared chests for Jesus and it's too fruity for the devil.
This was filmed in the Kingdome in Seattle... the place was a giant echo chamber NO ONE sounded good in there and there weren't a lot of concerts that were done there either. I can really only remember a handful. Most arena shows in Seattle were held in the Coliseum (aka the Key Arena which is much smaller and much more accoustically pleasing) Thank God the Kingdome is gone now--the place was a dump from the moment it opened for business.
It never ceases to amaze me; People can't just enjoy that this more than 30 year old footage exists of a truly influencial band despite all the drugs, sex and--wait for it--HUMILITY. All this dumb pissing and moaning and for what? I don't know about anyone else, but I'm tired of it.
If you can't get over the fact that you did not write the music, that you did not spend night after night, hours at a time on stage PER night, country after country, year after year, tough shit.
@knoxunflower1 Totally agree. Why some dumbs always go over the drugs fact over and over...hey dumbs everybody knows what just happened on the 70s about drugs and all of that excess so please...just enjoy that these footages have survived 'till these days for us to enjoy and to learn...if you don't like this just check for some other videos...not Rock And Roll.
@WildWestJack, go fuck youself. How dare you say that. Zeppelin is the best fucking band on the planet. Have a little sympathy for Plant. His 5 year old son died a few weeks after this concert you ignorant asshole.
i love this song its my favorite zep song but they really should have gotten another guitarist to handle the rhythms while page did the leads just my opinion.
Someone tune this video, because it don't sound like the band are in tune!
I like Zep, but not all their performances were amazing. Plant sounds disinterested, Page is all over the place, and Bonham sounds like he's trying to adjust to help them out. Sorry, there are just times when bands I like were not at the top of their game, and this in my opinion is one of those examples.
@mahatmacote I know what u mean, zep is my fav, but i have heard horror stories about the sound at the kingdome, for many artists!! by the way it sounds like jpj is out tune?! P.
glad I'm not the only one hearing that. It's too easy for people to be nothing but effusive in praise of great bands, but the artists themselves must cringe sometimes and feel the worship is over the top. Cheers MZH

@moreblack dude I was thinking the exact same thing. I love all zep. but theres something about Houses of the Holy, Physical Graffiti and Presence that are just top class. Even their latter concerts where drugs played a huge influence on performances, I give credit to playing for 3+ hours this intensely with so much going on. If anyone is a zep fan, check out the book When Giants Walked The Earth by Mick Wall published in 08'; extremely good book.
@WildWestJack The only thing wrong with any of those albums is that Jonesy experimented with crapy synth sounds on a handful of songs, otherwise they are awesome in every way. Go back under your bridge troll.

Probably some very talented very young people in the crowd that night: Cornell, Cantrell, etc. All very young in '77, but I'll bet at least few from Seattle's future music scene were there.
Ah yes, Zep at the dome July 1977... a good concert played at the worst concert venue known to man. Two words can sum up the general atmosphere of the crowd at this show.... general mayhem!

If only Zeppelin had all died in a plane wreck in late 1972, before Plants voice broke and Page became a sloppy guitar hack junkie..
1973 HOTH- first bad Zep Album. Plant now whines and screeches instead of ripping the vocals.
1975 PG- Several good songs... recorded before 1973.
1976 Presence- WTF?? Worst studio album ever by an established supergroup with all their original members
1976 SRS- Release of this crap proves Zep had all lost their minds.
1979 ITTOD- OK solo album by Jones

Probably some very talented very young people in the crowd that night: Cornell, Cantrell, etc. All very young in '77, but I'll bet at least few from Seattle's future music scene were there.

@rainmanx63 I agree, I think the whole grunge movement began at this show

Led Zeppelin: Your ear's dessert, it's like the first thing you wanna hear.
Led Zeppelin with Jimmy Page high: Your ear's backup dessert, if the first choice bores you, this is your backup.
Even with Page high they sounded good, but not as good as they were in 68 - 75.

page is cool when he's high

I challenge a modern guitarist to play as well as Page does here with a guitar out of tune, or to have as much fun as he does while up there

Ah yes, Zep at the dome July 1977... a good concert played at the worst concert venue known to man. Two words can sum up the general atmosphere of the crowd at this show.... general mayhem!

@celticsarebest in 2003 i think they considered using some 77 footage, either from this show our the 2 other filmed ones, but no multitracks exist

The Zep were in full command in the year which supposedly signalled a changing of the guard...

@chrook The whole concert was out of tune... it was in the Kingdome. Every concert in the Kingdome was out of tune.
July 17 1977 was one long fun day & night though!

I had tickets for the Aug 6th show in Buffalo, but due to the tragedy in Plant's family, it was canceled. Never saw them....
