  • nice work :)

  • Thanks

  • what kind of wood can i use

  • Cherry

  • will the cup mold or rot if you put liquid in it?

  • Thanks for your comment. The short answere is no. There are many things to seal it with, but I use good old fashioned vegetable or nut oil.

  • excuse me if the question seems stupid but when you say "vegetable oil" you mean common olive oil for example ?

  • Yes, olive oil is OK to use. Any oil that is edible.

  • Fantastic stuff!

Do you have a problem with checking as the wood dries? How do you prevent it?

  • Thanks for your comment. There are many reasons why wood cracks - too complex to go into. Try drying at a low temperature and slowly.

  • Cover the spoon or bowl in the rough in boiled potato to help drying

  • I used to use this technique - good if you want to make a spoon and use it the next day. It enables you to dry the spoon over night, over a heat source (acting like a glue), ready to finish off with knives in the morning. Be warned, It dries rock hard and can make the job a little more harder than it needs to be - in my opinion. I would still use it but only in the right circumstances (only good for roughed out work). My recommendation would still be drying at a low temperature and slowly.

  • Nicely done, I'm going to try and make one of these and was wondering whar you use to sal the inside of the cup to allow you to drink from it. i want to carve a spoon as well, do you have any videos with you doing that at all. Thanks

  • Thanks for your comment. I use warm vegetable or nut oil on mine. You can also use beeswax. Re: spoon carving, check out my Spoon Carving Pt1,2&3 (log to spoon)

  • sweet!

  • What exactly are you using at the end when you finshed carving it out. Is it possibly sandpaper? Also if its not to much trouble, do you know where one could find a birch burl?

  • I am using a cabinet scrapper - works well in deep cavities. As regards birch burl, I would try anyone associated with Arboriculture. Good Luck.

  • pretty cool

  • this is a great video, now i will try to make my own cup out of wood.. and i will carry it with me for the next 60 years so that it will have a soul and spirit... :D thanks alot :)

  • Thank you for your comment. Good luck with your carving.

  • really nice done, 5/5,

  • Tack för att du kommenterar, din kommentar är mycket uppskattade. Jag har bara sett ditt arbete på din kanal och jag är mycket imponerad av vad jag ser, du är helt klart väldigt begåvad.

  • I cut a log in half and im trying to make a cup. if I hollowed it out would it be as successful as your method?

  • The short answer is yes; that is essentially how a bowl is made. Good Luck

  • Wow nice going!

I really keep loving the sound of that Ry cooder solo check out the movie to! 'PARIS, TEXAS'

  • Thank you for commenting.

  • Very Nice! Do you know if there is a safe protective finish to protect the cup from staining because of juices, but not toxic, or waterproof I guess?

  • Thanks for your comment. I use warm vegetable or nut oil on mine. You can also use beeswax.

  • Excellent! Thanks!

  • WHere did you get the long crook / spoon knife from? I have been using fromst crook knives for spoons for a year or so, but have found them awkward for getting deep into a cup or bowl.

Get videos, keep up the good work.

    Bilge

  • The tool is called a hook knife and I made it myself. Your best bet is to talk to a local Blacksmith to see if he can make one up for you. Happy carving.

  • many thanks...

  • What type of wood?

  • The type of wood I am using here is Wild Cherry.

  • hi real nice carving!

  • Thanks for your comment.

  • Im sorry I couldn't help it, that was beautiful, you are very skilled to be using an axe, will u tell me what knife u are using on 1:10, Im sorry but I know its something simple, but I want to start on smaller things!!!

  • Thanks for your comment. I am using a Sloyd Knife made by a company called Frost, the blade length is 3¼ inches (82mm) long. Good luck with your carving.
