Just a brilliant singing actress. She captures all the right nuances necessary and makes this her own. Wonderful interpretation. Beautifully captured emotions.
beautiful phrasing here. saw her from the front row at a gala at the met, perhaps in 1976, I would not call her one of the greats, but she was a very rewarding singer.. Beautifully done here.
wow....this is a special version - I had almost forgotten about scotto. i love how she shoots up to the high B. so many others(and ones' that I adore,,price, milo) just pick the note off..Scotto was a special singer!
callas has the suffering, the ecstasy in her voice.... this version is beautiful, but it does not transfix the listener like callas does. i am not a big callas fan, but this aria belongs to her.
@Shanniquitie I love scotto but you are damn right, callas had a dramatic voice, the drama, sadness, misery of fatal things in life was in her ow voice, She was the greatest dramatix talent of all, there are others sopranos merits, like beauty like Caballe etc
But there is a "little" mistake : she says "tu non sei morta" --- "morta""dead" instead of "sola"alone" .... but it happens ... no problems at all ... she is WONDERFULL !!!
i wouldnt describe scotto sound as smooth or comforting.....she is the queen of "squillo" and verismo singing....my favorite soprano......but not a smooth voice.....renee fleming has a "smooth and comforting voice"
Glauce's aria was not cut! And she sounds great in that aria. How terribly campy/bitchy of you to think that whatever distortion you have of that story, now over 50 yrs old, would be relevant to this great rendition of La Mamma Morta. Please give the rest of us a break. That was old 30 years ago.Yawn.
OMG... this is truly one of the best recordings I have heard of her.. she sings this as though love was caressing her in stead of directing her like in Callas.. .I love them both.. but this one.. is so much more "comforting" if that makes any sense... and I have to say this that I am not a big fan of Scotto and Callas.. Scotto because of the sound at 436... I saw her live and that sound is just not great.. it is wonderful.. not great... just an opinion.
I've only lived to hear Maria sing it, but hearing Renata...wow, she's fabulous. Her soprano is so smooth and she makes the song so much her own. I love how she connectedbefore the B; the rich glissando is WONDERUFL to hear...I love this.
I agree with you completely. I couldn't standd anyone else who sang it but Maria, but Renata sings it beautifully! I like that both Maria and Renata take a breath before the note before the high B(if that makes any sense) becasue everything is so much more connected and they both have so much passion that is almost tangible when they perform it.

beautifull singing. callas convinces me better though. for instance when she says "io son la vita" scotto doesnt make me believe at all

Squally perhaps but nobody does squally like Scotto. It is a small price to pay for the passion and commitment you always get from this singer.

if only that high note could have been a human sound- the rest of the aria was magnificent

The top note was squally, but I love this performance. It's so musical and dramatic....

I agree... she gives it more subtleness than Callas does, anyway I love both performances.

Scotto's studio recording here is slightly better than Callas's studio rendition, IMO. Callas's live performance is a different story....
