@cw1310 Nope...go watch Nick's greatest video. This video defines reality. No end to ends, no seeing eye passes, no highlight dekes, one excellent defensive play. Slap shots yes and slap passes yes...every second of Nick's career is on video (tons of Orr's best never made it on film), and this is his greatest...shesh. Light years behind Orr. Go watch the video...then if you come back and argue, I will know who I'm dealing with. Nick is an All Star...Orr is in his own stratosphere!!
anyone see the video of "the great one" getting caught in the train tracks and the guy that hit him never playing in another game in the nhl? enough said! gretzky was protected and the league let adam graves slice away then gave him a good guy award and the penguins still won the cup
Great footage, very high quality. The NHL put all of the expansion teams in one division in the last 60's, so the Blues did not really belong in the Stanley Cup Finals.Bobby Orr proved that point .
not a surprising comment from some called ANTIUNIOUN...ill say the complete opposite of the truth just to get attention...a wimp?...couldnt carry Gretzkys spit bucket?...you can argue forever about who the greatest ever is...i think Orr and Gretzky are 1 2 in a photo finish...but to say Orr had to quit is so fucking untrue it makes me
wanna kick your ass all over Boston and Oshawa...he played one one leg for years and was still better than anyone else...now you can post another ignorant comment
'ANTIUNION' ....Such nonsense. To this artless, wretched individual "I put it this way" Most who actually 'followed' Orr's career, and the NHL from the mid 60's acknowledge Bobby as the greatest hockey player who has lived. In my own view Wayne Gretzky was not even in the same class. Your egregious attempt to ridicule Bobby with insults proves nothing - except perhaps, a worrisome psychological issue.
Orr couldn't carry Gretky's spit bucket. Orr played in a watered down league, during expansion. They players weren't athletes, just beer drinking losers.
Orr was a wimp too, he couldn't take the hard play and had to quit. That's after having a career of being protected by the Big Bad Bruins, today they are called goons. In reality, they were Orr's body guards.
Orr was the best to ever play the game, Gretzky even once said that Orr was better than he was. Here is the key: when you consider ALL FACETS OF THE GAME, Orr was the greatest, A L L F A C E T S !!!!, all categories of stats that are measured. I am sure that you won't do the work, but if you did, you would discover the truth!!
Hey..is it dumb72?? Ignore unionlover. Over time he will go away..or get banned for being a truthless, addled, knuckle dragging, union loving, Gretzky obsessed, myopic, close minded dolt. Unionlover If you say one bit of truth regarding Orr and "the great one end of the Ice" I will be forever shocked. Is it true that "the great one end of the ice" has the record for the most goals scored against while on the ice..how did he do that?? Why does no one ever bring this record up?? 2285 g. against
he is the best ever to play the game listen to jean beliveau or gordie howe . and he isa great person i have talked with him a few times class is his act
Continued: No disrepect to Orr, Lemieux and Gretzky, but when Terry decided to let no pucks into the net, then the game was over. It even doesn't matter what era he played in, because it wasn't shinny hockey by any means!
Orr couldn`t avoid that skill of not getting hit as somebody mentioned. He was a defensemen and he was the greatest at that position and when your on defense you have to hit.Not to mention that he can score at will and also assist even better.Bobby Orr was without a doubt the greatest hockey player that ever lived.
Considering Orr the best ever is no insult to Gretzky or Lemieux. Comparing players from different eras is difficult. The Plus-Minus numbers DO NOT LIE. They are the great equalizer when it comes to comparisons. Since none of these 3 in question played for a bad club---the plus-minus numbers are even more accurate. Orr's plus-minus numbers simply obliterate all other players, period. Also---defense is a much harder position. No such thing as floating or coasting as a defenseman.
Or he was a bitch....Orr fought his way into a league that was dominated by fighting, we know this as Old Time Hockey. The Bruins still exemplify this today if you watch them.
He could have skated around everyone but he chose not to. He changed the game as much as Gretzky did. He was the first defenseman to skate end to end and oh yah...circles around everyone else.
The problem with using plus/minus to compare them is that, I believe, during part of Orr's career they awarded a plus-point if the team scored on a power play. I believe they changed the rule because of Orr, BTW. For his assists, he also had some extraordinary scoring talent to pass to.
It's difficult to judge, though. The highlights I've been able to find of Gretzky all start within the offensive blue-line or at least at center-ice.
He had McSorley to defend him didn't he, that's why he did what ever he wanted. Now the best hockey player played from the crease... and that's Terry Sawchuk to get more than a hundred shutouts in a game so fast, played with awful protection and an era where there was no trap hockey is unreal!
Best D ever...hands down. I'm a Habs fan but admired Orr tremendously...he rarely lost the puck, had a great low shot, great vision, hands etc....he had it all...except a good knee doctor that butchered him and an agent that fucked him over. Hockey world's loss. He's also a hell of a nice guy too if you meet him. You rock Robert G. Orr!

1st off antiunion: Whatever your drinking or taking. It's gotten the better of you.
2nd: Gretzky came into the league during a larger expansion and influx of inferior players from other leagues, WHL, etc...
So that arguement don't wash.
Again your proving as stated previously:
It proves you haven't played or watched much hockey.
But if it makes you happy, stay with the Gretzky videos.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Almost forgot to mention expansion, without expansion and the WHA Orr wouldn't have any decent numbers.
So over rated it's amazing. Plus, he's a punk.

Gretzky had at least one crucial skill that Orr didn't have: a knack for not getting hit-- especially in the knees.
