Amazing that for a country that has been churning out vast quantities of modern music for decades that radio stations either had to go to sea or to another country to avoid the law. While private modern music stations were sprouting all over the USA, the patritian, change for changes sake, protectionist we know best brigade here were busy, in the best British anchor dragging tradition, telling everyone the World was flat.
Your a sick puppy, all this really meant to use back then was music to make us feel good. Don't turn good to bad with your self centred egotistical crap, get a life
In the media mythology of the 1960s it is seen as part of the rebellious counterculture. In reality it had been deliberately created by the New Right - as a part of their counter-revolution.
I was stationed in germany from 64 to 67 in the army(US) Used to pick up "RADIO CAROLINE" late at night on the short wave band, they played all the latest music.
before the pirates we had deadsville BBC 'light programme'-one PC popsong show every couple of days!...then in 64 came the pirates - caroline--london-- city etc and along with them the Swinging 60s--then in 67 phoney Tony Ben Labour Minister for Greyness brought in a law banning uk companies from advertising on the pirates and they eventually packed it in--instead we were given boring mediocre BBC Radio 1 and 2 with the playlist planned weeks in advance by dull penpusher bureaucrats
Yes I remember radio Caroline you couldn't get music like they play any where except on Luxembourg that was good too thanks again to all the dj's they were great it wasn't just the music that made radio Caroline great it was the DJ's as well I loved Tony Blackburn I wish it was still going thanks for this.
Hello, i'm making a documentary about radio, it's a school project for my exam, we won't broadcast it or just only on a website, i would like to use your video. where did you take it? did you shoot it? where can i contact the author? I thank you very much if you could help me..
Would have been so cool to be a part of this! Last Saturday 10-24-09 My band Planet TeXXXaS was played on Radio Caroline. It was like walking on a stage where "the greats" have been. I feel very privileged they considered us and that they are still broadcasting today. Tune in, they play the good stuff!
me too cause i watched the film without knowing anything about the historical background. the german title is "radio rock revolution" - quite boring compared to the original title
Who knows, with the growing popularity of satellite radio, terrestrial Fm channels maybe easier to aquire for LPFM, independent and non profit operators. Hopefully without some of the ridiculous regulations.
I think the ship is the same ship M/S Bon Jour used by Radio Nord in the early 60's on internationall water in the Baltic Sea, just 30-40km south east of Stockholm.
I have a DVD with a film recorded on the pirate offshore radiostation Radio Nord with comments from now a past technican.
The commentator says that Swinging Radio England is due on air-yet he points to the Oceaan 7, the ship that housed Radio 270. SRE came from the Olga Patricia/Laissez Faire...
This type of innacuracy was absolutely typical of the newspapers and TV of the time.
Has anyone got any more examples of the media misunderstanding offshoro radio?

@c0ddlefl0p - wtf? that was a movie based on pirate radio. Not this exact ship. there were loads of them.
Airbus294 2 years ago
Well in the movie there ship was called Radio Caroline
c0ddlefl0p 2 years ago
no it wasn't - there was no mention of that radio station in the boat that rocked. The boat was called Radio Rock.
Airbus294 2 years ago
Watch the movie and look at the side of the boat.

I remember in the same era "Radio Luxembourg, the station of the Stars", with an address in London. Were ther regarded as a pirate Radio Station ????

No - they were totally legitimate international broadcaster. See also Radio Normandy.
