These guys are amazing. It's not just a matter of playing the keyboards and changing the stops without losing a beat! Just watch his feet playing the bass bars and adjusting the volume and intonation.
@hatfm It's a church organ actually...they are voiced differently than a theater organ. Also the console appearance differs. Church organs usually have the traditional pull stops lined up in columns, where as a theater organ console has the stop buttons as levers lined up in rows...usually in an arch. Theatre organs usually have more vibrato and generally have a 'thicker' sound as they have many more ranks of pipes. Church organs have a more presence or a 'forward' sound.

This particular Wurlitzer is most difficult to play due to the way the consoles are spaced and the drawstops are very awkward to utilize. The foot pedals require a great deal more concentration than even the larger wurlitzer's
First, I believe that those who are ragging on Mr. Baker are forgetting that music invites interpretation. This is Mr Baker's interpretation of the piece, played in a stride-jazz style, every bit as legitimate as the original score. Stop ragging him for his interpretation. Opinion on whether he should do it on a 79-rank pipe organ is also specious. How can you say that the organ is not built for this music? Was the organ built for a Bach or Beethoven piece? No. It was built to play music upon.
The Entertainer is already difficult to play with two hands on a piano. Thenn, try it with two hands, two feet AND doing the swell pedal and registrations all at once. Besides that, the pipe organ is a much "slower" instrument to play. (It's key attack is much heavier than that of piano, and it even reacts slower to key presses.)
If the piano could be compared to steering a rowing boat, a pipe organ such as this one would be akin to a battle ship.
hahaha why is he playing that in a church? im sure there are other places where you can find a nice pipe organ, reagtime just doesnt feel like church music haha
This wasn't written for a big ass organ... it was written on a piano for pianos. He played it well, but you miss a lot of the syncopated goodness with a big huffy organ.
That sounds excellent! I would think I was listening to a Wurlitzer theatre organ! You really make that song sound great, especially with the deep base registration towards the end. Thanks for posting!
this organ is huge... this guy is good, i started learning the organ like a year ago and the feet are hard although he should better use of his bazillion manuals
I have the greates respect for the organist: excellent playing - everybody drops a note or two, he makes 4-way independence look easy. Thanks for 4 mins 24 seconds of genius.
There is no "right" or "wrong" in interpreting music. If he wants to do a swingy Entertainer, who is to say he shouldn't?
Look at Booker T. and the MG's. They covered a whole lot of songs in a way "they shouldn't have", but I find most of their covers better than the originals.
Awesome rendition. You swung it, however, and (unless I'm wrong), I don't think that's the right thing to do with a Rag. I always swing it when I play it on the piano, though, because I can't play the straight version fast enough!
I think it is the most appropriate thing to play on an organ. I can definitely imagine walking through an amusement park and hearing this on an old organ inside a Carousel. What could be more American?
basically, and its just not the same type of music. Rag was turn of the century. Songs like the Entertainer came out around 1902. Now the time that The Sting is actually set in would have more swing music. But they went with Rag for the movie, which was actually out of fashion at the time.
