Messi definitely play-acted a bit here (hence the delayed reaction and the yellow). However, there is no denying that Carvalho intentionally elbowed Messi in the face. I don't consider it a "dive" if the player doing the diving has been legitimately fouled. Ronaldo often play-acts when there is little to no contact and no ill intentions on the part of his opponent - that's what I call a "dive". Oh, and Carvalho was damn lucky to walk away from this without a card of his own!
