This song is more than any one thing! - it leaves itself open to any interpretation or situation the listener is going through..it can speak to the lost of someone..whether the end of a relationship or the death of someone close (like a parent). This is truly a beautiful song definitely one of the best songs around..might be a little on the sad/depressing side but there is a realness about it you cant ignore.Great song from a Great artist.. :D

Of course I believe it was focused on a failed relationship, but Alanis can take it much farther than that. That is why the people who like her music know what she means. Soo stating the obvious, yet as humans, we frequently overlook the obvious and try to mystify reality. Thank God for this lady. I'm sure she'll thank you.

I think this song might be a song about the loss of a child. could be that she or someone close to her has lost an infant during pregnancy. when you see the orginal video shes on a beach and she is holding her own hand and if you look carefully you can see that alanis that is sitting up looks pregnant. and it also makes alot for sens if you see the video read the text and think of what I have just written. little and hardly here - I as I and not as we. after my own loss I just see it like that.

@lexmannx - yup, I agree. We do often loose ourselves in relationships, and that is NOT healthy. I think, in a healthy relationship, there is both a "we" and an "I", for both people.

I never, ever want to be start saying stuff like "we think" or "we're going" or whatever all the time! Argh! I'm in a relationship, but I'm still an individual!!!!

I see a lot of parents do that, too - they become "kate's mom" instead of "kate", etc. I'm not having kids, so that's a problem I won't have.
