This is my favourite version of this piece. Richter gives it the space it deserves, literally like the music is breathing. Indescribable. Thank you for uploading!
@KhagarBalugrak: Well, Gustav Mahler did say that "If a composer could say what he had to say in words he would not bother trying to say it in music." So I don't you need to worry about being speechless, because frankly I am too after listening to this! ;)
There's nothing I can say that will do justice to this piece and this recording. This piece alone is enough to convince me that Rachmaninov is one of the top three Western composers ever to live - maybe even the greatest. I'm left speechless every time I hear this piece, and Richter plays this better than I ever could have imagined it being played.
@Indigokitteh simple reason-with classical music you have silent and loud parts, also phrasing, and with pieces like this you can't play it loud all the time-in that case it wouldn't be so pretty, but if you listen to some symphonies by mozart or other classsical pieces you''ll see that they are quite loud, enjoy;-)
Richter was always disppointed about himself,he sais that all his recording are bad,the only time that he was proud of himself with a recording,is that he doesn't know that is himslef playing, lol!!!
this is my favourite peformance of this piece. damn you richter! the onl;y time you play slow an its still amazing. i just find other pianists tend to rush the phrasing a bit for me
@morvensky Thanks- just listened to him. Mine was Richters actually. I first heard Moiseiwitsch's which honestly I thought was okay- but it was Richter's version that made me really like this piece.
@nocturnalpianist It's funny, I never liked Richter before this piece! I used to think he was over-rated and way to mechanical. In a way he is mechanical. He just play's as it is- but with a pre-planned interpretation.
Richter plays ALL the notes!

I'm learning to play this piece too, right now, but I don't think I'll ever be able to make it sound this good!!

Rachmaninoff was inspired by Böcklin's painting Die Heimkehr ("The Homecoming") to compose this prelude... :)

I absolutely love this piece. I learned it this year, but it is so difficult to keep memorized - and play the intense parts up to speed!

Why is the volume always so low on classical videos?

@Jaksha92 Oh thanks! I thought it had to do with the quality of the recordings.

Not my favorite performance (it is good, just not my personal favorite), but it is my favorite prelude.

Richter is my favorite!
I play his version all the time. And like you it was his version that made me want to play this piece.
I play piano for my HS choir and would play this song all the time.
