  • I love hearing fans of other colleges showing their respect for KU and the chant. Its pretty intimidating if you think about it.

  • take the whooing out!

  • I'm a Kentucky fan since birth but I have tremendous respect for the KU tradition. After all, coach Rupp came from Kansas! Going to the Phog is definately on my bucket list

  • Gives me chills every time, GO KU

  • diehard Gator fan and I have to say---this is the most haunting chant in all of college basketball.

  • If you hear this it means one of two things; you're about to get your ass kicked, or, you just did. Rock chalk, baby.

  • and my friends wanna go to UW lol

  • @jtallon8 not tryin to pick a fight or anything but...why are u on a Jayhawk video if your are a Kentucky Fan?

  • NOOOO!!!!! DON'T WHOOO!!!!!

  • nice presentation

  • I went on exchange to this wonderful university for a semester from Australia. I left almost 5 months ago, and I still miss this place like I left yesterday! Returning next year for a visit, because I loved KU so much. You just can't find school spirit like this anywhere else <3

  • Thumbs up if you are a KU GRAD!

  • 1958 Jayhawk grad here. Always loved the Rock Chalk chant, though we did it slightly differently than what is done now. As for the Alma Mater hymn, my high school--College High School at Central Missouri State--used the same tune with similar words. The tune is widely used, and just sounds great as an Alma Mater hymn.

  • i went to THE LEGENDS OF THE PHOG yesterday and i swear i thot i was the biggest KU fan EVER but after that IM AN EVEN BIGGER FAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

  • 44 people are Missouri fans.

  • Completely unbiased opinion here, but that sounds like Gregorian Chant lol

  • husker fan... converted to jayhawk. living in oliver this fall

BUT THERE'S NO WOO AT THE END! IT DEFEATS THE EERIE FEEL!

  • @kingofallryans34 EXACTLY

  • Teddy Roosevelt once called the Rock Chalk chant the best in college athletics.

    'nuff said.

  • Kansas Jayhawk basketball are like the Oklahoma Sooners in football .. always winning, Im a die hard sooner fan but a lowkey fan of Kansas :)

  • KU class of 2015 baby!! can't wait to go to those games at the allen fieldhouse

  • just got enrolled. :P

  • huge kansas fan! will be attending hopefully after next year as a junior college transfer. quick question- when was allen fieldhouse built? was it around when chamberlain played?

  • @gtime30 AFH opened in 1955, the same year Wilt Chamberlain came to KU, so he played in the Fieldhouse.

  • Oh and EMILY (the cheerleader) love u

  • One more factoid about the Rock Chalk Chant. To this day, it is still THE only organized chant ever done in the Olympics. KU won the 1952 title and represented the USA in the Olympics (Melbourne). The USA played game one and the KU cheer squad went out to do the song and cheer. The people of Melbourne loved it so much they were requested to do it before EVERY basketball game. BEHOLD THE POWER OF THE CHANT!

  • A bunch of goofballs !

  • i used to believe this is best. that is until i heard utah states student section

  • Chills.

  • Always Wanted To Go To KU. Now, Instead Of Wichita, Kansas. I Live In Dallas, Texas. And It Is Still My #1 Choice. Rock Chalk Forever Baby!!

  • creepist chant. cant stand it

  • What is Kansas?

  • war eagle and rocky top do not

  • Naismith

  • This is pathetic. 3 times more bandwagon Huskie fans like IT's last second shot in the Pac Ten finals than this. I am (soon to bee) a graduate of the University of Washington (in Political Economy), and I can say with full confidence that this is better than anything we have put together for our Sports teams in 3 years here. I wish we had a storied program, but we don't.

  • 32 people are either Tigers, or Wildcats. Booooooooo! KU all the way!

  • what r they saying

  • not even close Tennessee's rocky top and auburns war eagle kill this

  • @GTNPLZ

    Rocky Top....a lame country song.

War Eagle.....it's just an eagle that flies around. Big whoop.

  • Best chant I've ever heard

  • sorry to ruin it for you guys, not the best chant. Not even close

  • Ummmm. Where was the chant? Rock Chalk is not a cool intimidating name for a college chant. Lame.

  • Is lewis a good dorm because im thinkin about that one or ellsworth

  • @aalcaine Im lookin into housing too, and I would recommend Ellsworth.

  • Cool chant...but some of the most useless motions during it!

  • Stolen from Cornell

  • @ronesjones Crimson and Blue was based off Cornell's "Far Above Cayuga's Waters." However not stolen. We have always given Cornell the credit for the song (since 1891). Perhaps you should educate yourself before making accusations.

  • where was the chant?

  • @VicerExciser5 It starts at 1:05

  • @Jantzenw I don't get it. All they say is "rock chalk jayhawk".

  • in which yall lost at home and on the road to a really great team and a good team. yall might win it my heels might this year but next year will be on our. we also got a great alma matter song.

  • class of 2015 Jayhawk here(: so excited!!! what residence hall is best? any thoughts??

  • @killswitch445 Congratulations! Make sure to check out Class of 2015 Facebook page at facebook.com /KU2015 - they may have some advice on the advantages of each hall.

  • @killswitch445 Hash hall

  • @rsb023 That's the performing arts one right? my plan is to go into the Film program so would that be a good fit?

  • @killswitch445 Hashinger or Ellsworth for sure! ive lived in both.

  • @killswitch445 Just avoid McCullum. Ellsworth and Lewis are both pretty nice.

  • @killswitch445 ellsworth facing the school or the parking lot. the building runs north and south. if your room faces the school you get sunrise; parking lot - sunset.

  • @killswitch445

I lived in McCollum 2000-2002. Loved that dorm. If not that one, stay in one of the 5 atop the hill. There's so many students in that area it's really fun. Live it up, I wish I could go back in time!

  • @killswitch445 Me too!

  • @killswitch445

    McCullum!!

  • chilling

  • We're The Best Of The Best! We Invented The Game We Perfected The Game We Rule The Game ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK KU!

  • Sounds like some Napalese Buddist-type monk shyt!

  • sounds like yall performin an exorcism

  • Needs a little more blue. Go KU! Hey, that rhymes!

  • Now there's something everyone can enjoy. It's called tradition!

  • Jayhawks all the way! :D

  • lists this as a possibility for a wedding song. :D

  • As a Current Jayhawk, I must say, this is my FAVORITE part of going to any of our sporting events!! Gives me chills at basketball games cause allen fieldhouse really echos. KU revolves around basketball and it's amazing how many students come, good thing I've got season tickets!!(: RCJHKKU!!

  • there's nothing like doing the rock chalk chant with tens of thousands of fellow fans. sure beats moronic moving back & forth to Wabash Cannonball....a song that was already the fight song for Texas.....

  • I got to experience it in person at Allen Fieldhouse last night for the first time ever. We watched the Hawks beat UCLA by 1 pt with .7 seconds left- what an experience! I am a UNM Lobo fan, but KU will always be up there now after that!

  • I'm a Duke fan but I love this! It gives me chills =]

  • Crap, i think utah state better

  • I love that, I get chills down my spine, every time, i've heard it a gazillion times, but daMN, the goosebumps!

  • This sounds like something a cult would sing.

  • @TheMrsamuelson we jayhawks are a cult! :)

  • every time i listen to this i get goosebumps!!! its so creepy but cool sounding.

  • @KUjayhawkboy not creepy...it's hauuunting.

This is from a Florida Gator fan.

  • i think the movie dirty dancing uses KU's alma mater as the end of the talent show where everybody starts singing about kellerman's.

  • @applejax26 omg! I noticed that too! It's gotta be it!

  • @applejax26

KU's alma mater was taken from Cornell's.

Then Missouri stole it off us

  • still get chills listening to these chants...seriously the best 4 years of my life were spent at KU :)

  • Not only the best chant, but the best pre-game in college basketball. After the Alma Mater, chant, etc. then you have the intro video which Scot Drew took his precious Baylor Bears off the court so as to not be intimidated (didn't work) and the confetti flying. Totally awesome and should be on any basketball fans bucket list of things to do.

  • Rock chalk has to be the least motivating thing to win a game i have ever heard. .....sure its long and drawn out. but eh.... hearing it would not get me excited at all. but i guess thats why im not a KU fan

  • @mtgrizfankb It's not done to "win the game" you ape.

  • i was a long time hawk fan before going to a game...my first game at ku, i cried a bit when i heard the rock chalk and saw the opening video...best years of my life, and that is saying something

  • Started by Cornell, Perfected by KU!

  • ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK BABY!!!!! I GET CHILLS EVERYTIME I HEAR THIS

  • kstate fan here..Hate KU soo much. But this does give you chills at a live game

  • I've noticed that my University of Alabama and a lot of other colleges and Universities use this melody for their alma maters as well.

  • There is nothing, and I mean *nothing*, like being in AFH when the chant goes up. The first time I heard it in situ I nearly burst into tears. It chills, it awes, it resounds as the words rise to meet the rafters and the room is otherwise hushed. Pay heed, indeed.

  • @BestBBQ1 can i quote you on this...i am writing a editorial on why kids should attend college and the memories it brings...this is just one of many ways to createt them

  • @jackitup52 Feel free!

  • im coming ku

  • I'm a Husker through and through, but DAMN it gives me goose bumps to hear that! I had a buddy drag me to a game in Lawrence one time, and i had a blast. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!!

  • Wave the wheat! You can take the girl out of Kansas, but you can't take the Kansas outta the girl!

  • how cheesy is this..

  • Comment removed

  • i am the biggest ku fan

  • i thought this was going to be much cooler. really not all that special. like the idea. just lacks an overall energy or thrill

  • What kind of chant did North Iowa have?

  • @renegadereposter what is north iowa?

  • Wondering how many negative or just plain neutral posts have been deleted from this thread.

Maybe there is something I don't get here, but the chant is neither haunting nor groovy. I think KU fans are just kind of deep in their fan mindset and wanting it to be something special, which is natural. But I am underwhelmed. Or not whelmed at all. Sorry.

  • A chant 124 years old in a building the inventor of the game coached in.. where Phog Allen, Larry Brown, Roy Williams and Bill Self have coached.

The same chant Dean Smith, Adolf Rupp, and Wilt Chamberlain heard before and after games.

Yeah... not to cool. But I guess unless you don't know anything about college basketball, you wouldn't appreciate it. Or, maybe you just have to be there. All I know is that when this chant starts, I love to watch the away team fans look around and smile

  • @renegadereposter well guess what no one cares what you think.

  • @renegadereposter maybe you have to be there but it's something even if you're not in the field house. Fun Fact: many years ago the national basketball team (I think? not sure about the group) met The Pope who asked to hear an American sports cheer and This is what they decided to perform. So obviously KU fans aren't the only ones who like it.

  • the Rock Chalk Jayhawk chant might be one of the scarriest things i've ever heard.

  • I think it's pretty cool and I'm a Syracuse alum. The first part sounds a lot like Gregorian chant. I think YouCanCallMeAl1022 got it right...haunting!

  • What's intimidating about it? Sounds more like the Glee club warming up.

What's intimidating about it? Maybe it's when you're at one of the loudest stadiums in the country, down by 20, and listening to that. Then Rock Chalk, Jayhawk, can be pretty intimidating.

  • its not the chant before the game.... its the one during it towards the end

  • Tennessee Vol here but I really love and respect this chant. It's great!

  • greastest chant know to THIZ WORLD

  • I'm a Florida Gator fan and whenever I hear this, i think of 1 word...HAUNTING.

  • I always get chills hearing this!

  • Best chant in college sports, can't deny it. It penetrates all the way to your bones

  • okay here's what i've figured---somehow when you hear this chant, you feel like you're in one of those gothic cathedrals where you are supposed to feel...owned.

  • @iRule311 nah best chant is utah state winning team losing team chant if you havent checked it our search it

  • thats the best chant in college sports. i get chill bumps whenever i hear it

  • Go Jayhawks

  • Wish people would quit doing the WOOOOOOOO in between it.

  • The wooooooooo is the exclamation point moron!

  • I agree, that's not a part of the official chant.

  • As a Gator; I can only imagine how INTENSE it must be to be in Lawrence for the KU-Mizzou basketball game!

    Good luck, Jayhawks!

  • I also am a lifelong Gator fan--and this chant is just beyond intimidating...it's haunting.

  • What's intimidating about it? Sounds more like the Glee club warming up.

LOL at the big red wig on the tuba player.

  • ...I know the guy. Not a wig...

  • @sternim77 chant starts at 1:07, and its not suppose to be intimidating, its more of a blessing to the crushed opponents :D

  • It doesn't get much crazier than that even when the Mizzou teams suck like usual. I was at a game in 2007, it was actually a really close and a really good game for once. Of course the Jayhawks prospered as usual.

  • rock chalk jayhawk baby.

  • ROCK CHALK NATION ALL THE WAY.

    nuff said

  • Very impressive. The alma mater is Cornell's if I am not mistaken but none the less well done by KU. This song is the ultimate Collegiate song there is by far. Rock Chalk Chant is very haunting, I can imagine for opposing fans. I know it is to the Tech basketball team as I don't think we have ever played a game there closer than 20 points. :(

  • im a student at the university of alabama and ku's alma mater sounds very similar to ours! nice tradition ku!

  • @mdawwg17 How many basketball national titles does your have?

  • @mdawwg17 Thanks! I love Alabama and KU. They're 2 of my top 5 favs. 1. KU 2. Wichita State 3. Miami 4. Oklahoma State ( P.S. Definatly gotta change that ) 5. Alabama Rock Chalk! Go Shocks! Go U! Go Pokes! and Roll Tide!

  • sorry you think it's "borring" but you just can't understand unless your a KU fan.

  • this is borring. Schools should be more creative.

  • this gives me the chills eveytime it hear it

    ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK

  • Agreed. I miss Lawrence. I'm def moving back and enrolling for another 12 years.

  • I'm actually a born and raised Florida Gator fan and this chant is just sooo...haunting.

  • Wow that's gotta be the coolest Alma mater i've heard...still think ole miss' hotty toddy is the best cheer though.

  • The Alma Mater tune is the same for almost every school (including schools like Northwest Missouri State) but the lyrics are different obviously... This is the reason for the same kind of tune for everyones Alma Mater. All in all, KU has the best tune and lyrics Alma Mater!! Rock chalk Jayhawk baby!

  • Its like heaven........ ROCK CHALK!

  • its also georgia's, i think the song has just become the alma mater standard for many schools. the rock chalk jayhawk chant is pretty neat, even if it does sort of descend into incoherent mumbling at the end. good luck this year, ku!

  • welcome to the cult of Kansas, you guys are creepy

  • Not to denigrate KU here, but the tune is the same as Indiana's alma mater "Hail to Old IU," right down to the key of A-flat that they play it in. I'd be curious as to who wrote it first, Indiana or Kansas.

  • Its also North Carolina's

  • and Syracuse as well

  • This alma mater and chant is like some deranged version of Animal House - creepy.

  • thats creepy as hell

  • Best Alma Mater and chant ever

  • West Point's Alma Mater is better. By thousands of miles.

  • This is our year!

  • GO JAYHAWKS

  • love it

  • man the chant gives me goosebumps all the time..love it..only at KU baby!!!

this is the year of the Hawk all the way.!

  • This video doesn't even compare to how awesome the chant is in person. Still, awesome vid. ROCK CHALK!!!

  • KU!!!!!!!!!!

  • wow my high schoool had the same instrumentals..of course the words are different

  • whoooooooooooooo ROCK CHALK!!!!!!! this is our year!!!!!

  • this year is the year!!!.. your gonna be hearing this chant all year!!,... ROCK CHALK JAYHWAK!!

  • I was at the OU-KU football game this year. I have say that it is cool to hear 50,000 perple do that.

  • i wana go to KU!!!! but i live in NY...btw both my parents are alumns!!! GOOOO JAYHAWKS!!!

  • digging the jazz verision for the ending

  • Being a WVU fan, as much as a hte to say it that's one of the coolest chants ever!

  • I agree with Begley. Much louder and better in person. Still, goosebumps.

  • Go Jayhawks!

  • I love my jayhawks

  • I'm a 1993 Alum, and I think my key faub says it all "Once a Jayhawk, Always a Jayhawk". Even though I went to Law School in Richmond, VA, I never attended 1 sporting event there, preferring to remain true to the Crimson and Blue! ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK, GO KU!!!

  • October 8, 1988 I had the privelege of hearing Rock Chalk for the first time. I was one of the majority of fans that filled the football stadium who were dressed in Red. We intermingled with the KU fans and heard them all sing the alma mater and then Rock Chalk Jayhawk KU. At that time, I realized I had heard one of the most unique and stirring cheers ever. Although nothing stirs my heart more than Hail Varsity, I will always remember the BEST cheer in college sports: Rock Chalk Jayhawk KU

  • This makes me excited for the fall of 2010 when I will be a KU student!!!!

  • Hi - Im KU Alum 1993. I absolutely luved it. Beautiful campus, very good. profs, decent food in Union, Earth Day w/concerts on "The Hill", getting thrown in "Potter's Lake" and, most of all - BASKETBALL (after all, BBall WAS invented there by Dr. James Naismith, who nailed peach baskets on the walls for buckts - he wanted 2keep Fball playrs in shape durin KS wintrs. If you d//n do anythng, camp out for a BBall game, drink Rasp.Wheat Beer @ Mass. Ave. Brewry. Best of luck-ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK!

  • Well, you have every right to be proud of KU Basketball, but a correction here. Basketball was not invented at KU by Naismith. It was only perfected at KU.

  • @musicinme1106 Congrats man!

  • I'm no Kansas fan but this is the coolest thing ever.

  • there no better sound! ROCK CHALK! when u look back on the history and tradition it mind blowing! "theres no better place to coach, theres no better place to play, theres no better place to go to school. ROCK CHALK" -- Larry Brown

  • This video doesn't really give a good example of how loud it is in real life..

  • the alma mater gives me chills
