  • We get far less angry honks and abuse rotating to the right. I would hazard a guess that 99%+ of local motorists have no clue what a paceline is and when they see a lone slow(er) rider in the lane being passed by faster riders on the right it becomes a sore point to them. Conversely when they come upon a line of riders passing a slower rider on the left that is "how it is done" with cars, back hoes,hay wagons etc so it is acceptable to most drivers.In high traffic areas it is the way to go.

  • Thanks for this. I've always ridden this way on rural roads with no bike lane and little shoulder. Another advantage of this method is the rider dropping back rides along at a safe distance from the edge and away from debris that is more concentrated the farther to the right you get. This reduces potential causes for flats. Overtaking riders also need not worry about being crowded to the road edge by the rider moving back, thereby minimizing sudden changes in direction that can cause crashes.
