It's beyond doubt that Hitler was a roman catholic and a believer. He invoked God in lots of his speeches and talked about the "creator of the universe" many times wich an atheist would never do. He also kept close ties with the vatican throughout his rule. However I would not say it was his religion that made him do what he did, it was a completely deranged mind. With muslims it's different, their religion actually says that they will get to heaven and get 72 virgins if they die for allah.
One difference between between Hitler (as an atheist) and the Islamist terrorists, is that the terrorists belief in their religion encouraged them to do what they did.
If you were to consider Hitler a Catholic, then you could make the case that it was his belief that caused him to try to get rid of the Jews.
You can't make that case for anyone who is an atheist, as their is no underlying belief like that.
I wouldn't wanna adopt baby George Bush either. He also caused the suffering of thousands of people and more. We just had our 21st century Hitler and I sincerely hope he gets persecuted for his actions.... I am thinking 64 years ago from now (that's how long ago Hitler died I think), people would be asking the same question that you raised Bret but instead it'll be about G. Bush.
