  • 40 people are from the south ;)

  • @TdotSoul Lol

  • I saw this episode when it first aired, here in Australia, but had no idea that it meant so much to Americans. From 12,000 Km's away. I suppose we felt it was just two Americans (except William Shatner is Canadian).

  • Great video.

  • But we never actually see them lip-locked. Uhura's head seems strategically angled to obscure the view.

  • I love black women so much yummier than white women as a kid the first woman i ever fancied was Mrs. huxtable from the cosby show hehehe x

  • both actors rise to the occasion!!i love it!

  • Different races do exist. Why shouldn't they? Celebrating one's heritage and the beauty of different cultures is what being diverse is all about. If someone calls me white, I don't take offense. Why should I? I'm European. I have an amazing cultural background, and I'm proud of it. Acknowledging different races is not being "racist" or anti-anything, it's about celebrating how amazingly diverse and colourful our world is. "Race" is not a dirty word.

  • Can you upload the first black-white DVDA please?

  • uhura looks so sexsy in thie episode!!

  • @son8of8vazkor I know. I actually watched this episode when it was first aired. I'm just surprised that there are still people who would find the idea bothersome.

  • @narfanoid

I thought it was green broads he was famous for dating?

  • If it was me instead of Shatner kissing the lovely Nicholls,I wouldn't have a problem with it!!:)

  • Interracial marriage, in my opinion, should still be illegal. And it would still be here if it weren't for an out of control Federal government!

  • @theskiesbelowme Racist.

  • Not only this, but if I read American history correctly, it was also the love that a white man felt for a black woman that got the racist laws against interracial marriage downturned in the first place. Pretty awesome legacy.

  • I agree with posters that "I love Lucy" was more important than this episode. Like "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" "I love Lucy" displayed interracial marriages in a positive light. This kiss in "Star Trek" was more like interracial porn and as someone pointed out, the characters were forced to do it against their will. This makes a difference.

  • Pointless cheap shot at George. Don't be such a douche.

  • I know some people in Paris, Canada and other counties may find it stupid to make a big deal out of this kiss.

But at the time of this Star Trek kiss, it was against the law in many American Southern States for blacks to marry or to associate with whites. It was a time of Rosa Parks and Civil Rights. It was Hell.

  • At the time of the kiss, it was against the law for whites and blacks to marry in the (Southern) United States. A while before this, a white woman quickly smooched a black athlete on TV and many viewers raised hell.

With this in mind, you could get in trouble for interracial things on tv. Of course, Southerners wouldn't mind if a white was raping a black woman or if a black woman was a whore.

  • I saw this episode when it first came out, and when I saw this scene I got a major woody.

  • STFU Realiteit01! I'm Black & my son is half Jewish & he is absolutely Perfect! Your a racist ASSHOLE & prob have no prob with "race-mixing" behind closed doors! FUCKER!

  • I think this was awsome!!

  • Sadly, it really wasn't a kiss. It was more like a "near-miss", if you look very closely.

Also, the situation was FORCED upon the two characters....they didn't do it willingly.

But at least it was a start...........

  • back then, doing that, was considered instant no by fcc and viewers. now in this timeline thats nothing. all the news reports talked about this back then as well

  • This wasn't the first interracial kiss on television. Lucy and Ricky kissed many times on I Love Lucy, but apparently nobody cares about that. It's only REALLY interracial when it's a black/white kiss, right?

  • @MisterFezMartin You know, I never really thought about it like that. For me though, it's just skin color, not race, so "back then" the more extreme the difference in skin color, the worse it was.

  • ricky was italian so it was accepted. this however was groundbreaking

  • @zygas25 Ricky was actually Cuban, thus making him Hispanic. Lucy was Caucasian, which means that they were an interracial couple. Just about every episode had an interracial kiss, so Star Trek can't even claim to be the first. (Especially since Desilu was the production company that made Star Trek.)

  • @MisterFezMartin

come on, we all know what they mean with interRACIAL, and especially what was meant back in the 60s, and i think before that nancy sinatra kissed i think sammy davis jr, which was more of an fatherly kiss since she knew him since her early childhood, but i think they meant that star trek was the frist series ever to have the balls to make black and white into brown love.

  • @MisterFezMartin A Hispanic race? The very idea is absurd, if you ask me. There's no such thing, really. Already the Romans made extremely sure there would never be a Hispanic race, when they complemented the Celtiberian and Carthaginian populations with their own genes and those of slaves from all over the empire. Later on Vandals, Visigoths and Moors completed the mess most thoroughly, along with some Frankish influence. Really, everybody everywhere is a mix, like it or not.

  • @jannevellamo add bit of Aztec, Carib, Arahuak, Maya, Taino, Inca and we jammin PAPI!!!

  • @MisterFezMartin - Ricky was Cuban of Spanish descent, so Ricky & Lucy's were as inter-racial as Princess Di dating a Greek. Spain IS part of Europe. To say that Cubans, or Hispanics, are another race is like saying an Australian is of a different 'race' than a Caucasian from England, or the US.

Sure, some Aussies have native blood, like some Americans, but that is not what we are talking about here. Some have African 'blood', but we all do. The human gene pool is VERY small.

  • Aired November 22, 1968. Many stations in America's south refused to broadcast the episode, and it was banned in England for almost 25 years.

  • I would love to kiss captain Kirk

  • Captain Kirk sunk his meat into anything with two legs, two bumps, three holes and a heartbeat. So kissing a Black woman is nothing to him.

  • Atleast he was kissing a hot women crew member....Picard was but-slammin' Wesley Crusher on the holo-deck 2. I have proof..

  • Kirk was bangin' anything with two tits and a heat-beat. He was knockin' boots with a blue chic too!

  • It's not interracial when Shatner is at it. It's understandable. No woman of any colour can resist such temptation.

  • is anyone on here not an idiot?

  • Lay that pipe, Bill.

And remember...they're all pink in the inside.

    LOL

  • Oh, how I love The Shat... As for Uhura, I'm a girl. But, I'd probably still kiss Uhura circa the late 60s. Nichelle is a beautiful woman, and she looked great in those barely there little skirts from the original series! Ditto for Uhura 2.0, Zoe Saldana!

  • Kiss a beautiful woman to further Civil Rights and racial tolerance ? Tough job. . . . .Where do I sign up?

  • @kevmarkpat Nichelle was a fox back then!

  • @kevmarkpat i agree with you there!

  • @kevmarkpat i agree with you there!an attractive woman is an attractive woman no matter what race she is!

  • sweet

  • I wanna kiss Shatner 20+ times ; 3;

    It was a good episode~

  • Shatner and Nimoy both wanted to do the kiss, originally.

I'm sure that's big "nothing" he was refering to.

  • 12-28-2009. Happy Birthday, Nichelle. Or can I call you Lieutenant? Heh-heh. You and William Shatner definitely made history when you kissed each other on TV. I hate to think what would have happened if it had been the other way around. That would break new ground down the road. Many happy returns.

  • STFU you!

  • Deal with it.

  • Didn't he say it ended up not being the first on TV in his Star Trek Memories book? Something about there being 2 versions filmed, and one of them was the full on kiss, and the other was one where they were turned away and couldn't be seen very well...kind of where the kiss was implied? I haven't seen the ep in forever, but I do remember reading that in his book...

  • In an interview with Nichelle Nichols, she said that they did about 20+ takes and they only did the last one without the kiss. However, Shatners crossed his eyes right at the end of the take, so they had to use one of the takes with the kiss. True it's not very clear on the episode itself, but they did do it. Lucky Shat!

  • When people understand that there is only one human race, then this silly idea of an "interracial kiss" will not make sense at all. It was between to people. It isn't like she was one of those blue broads Kirk was famous for dating.

  • lol

  • hey those blue broads were hot shit ;D

  • @narfanoid Well that has more to do with the US mentality then really a world wide thing..

  • @narfanoid

    "two" not to

  • @ethicks00 Wow, you managed to find what is possibly the only time I used "to" instead of "two". And I usually bug other people about that. LOL

  • @ethicks00 Thank you. I usually get on other people's cases for that sort of mistake. Sometimes I just let my fingers get ahead of me.

  • @narfanoid lol

  • @narfanoid Sorry, I'm afraid that pesky biology thing is still getting in the way of the whole liberal "one race" fantasy the Jewish media loves to daydream about. I wonder when science is going to learn to stop being so racist!!

  • @narfanoid Agreed. It's strange how tiny differences sometimes overshadow that we all are humans first.

  • @chrysopoeia321 At the time of this episode, the idea of an "inter-racial kiss" on tv was quite scandalous. Much of the population of people watching the show needed such a kick in the butt to get some thought processes going. It's sad to me that there are still people in the world who would be offended by such a thing.

  • @narfanoid I agree with you. And I think the significance of this scene was the fact that it helped pave the way to the very idea you mentioned. The proof would be that I'm the product of an interracial relationship

  • @narfanoid You've screwed up your terms big time. SPECIES =/= RACE. The clouded leopard, Indian tendua, jaguar, black panther, snow leopard, Amur leopard etc. are types (or sub-species) of the Panthera Pardus species.

Caucasoids, Mongoloids, Negroids, Capoids and Australoids are similarly the SEPARATE racial branches of the Homo sapiens sapiens species.

    See the difference?

  • @Imrankniazi People who support the "race" idea in humans are supporting the danger of a "different species" concept. There is not enough difference between one group of humans and another to constitute classifying them differently. The traits are too superficial.

  • @narfanoid Too superficial?? My dear, you must read from the two sources I cited and we can have a proper discussion later. I'd also recommend Dr. William Shockley's work on "Race, Eugenics and IQ" in addition to the two above.

  • @Imrankniazi The term "race" is neither scientific, nor is it really relevant in modern discourse about human diversity. "Race" is an old idea that came out of people's desire to classify themselves differetly from others. It's "racist" and outdated.

  • @narfanoid What is outdated? Did you ever read Cavalli-Sforza's world famous work on racial differences? Or perhaps James Watson's work in developing the DNA and his recent comments about racial differences?

I can understand if some people, for reasons best known to them, do not want to acknowledge race. But saying it doesn't exist is scientifically inaccurate.

  • @Imrankniazi The very fact that you mention Schockley is enough for me to have a hint of where you're coming from. Can you say "racist"?

  • @narfanoid Let me get this straight. When you don't agree with proven studies, science is supposed to be racist?

  • @Imrankniazi You should read more. Current science finds just the opposite. Racist.

  • @Imrankniazi What proven studies are you talking about? Anything recent, or are they all from the 50s and 60s?

  • @narfanoid

that will never happen. in an utopian society it would be possible, but let's not forget that we are humans. Humans are not perfect and will never be perfect. Racism, sexism, ageism and all other forms of discrimination will never disappear. It might die down or decline, but it will always exist.

  • @BabyGirlGoddess Yes, humans can be very stupid. And they do like to hold onto idiotic prejudices and unjustified contempt for those who are not like themselves. I guess it just never hurts to tell racists exactly what they are.

  • Perfect that Kirk & Uhura represented the first interracial kiss.

  • Oh William... dare I say this is an example of you being humble? TV's first interracial kiss being a 'big to do about nothing' is akin to Armstrong's first step on the moon being a big to do about nothing. Sure, it was a little thing per-se... but the significance and consequences of these little things change how humans think and live; in turn, society.

  • Don't be afraid of black women. They are just as sexy and brilliant as any other color. Nichelle Nichols was hot. If I was William Shatner, I'd want that role too. Although; if you saw the rest of that episode, I think y'all would agree that he paid for it.

  • nothing is better than transformation when the original didnt work. if your so critical of the american mentality of change you can leave. your conspiracy theories would find a nice home somewhere else. trust me, no one cares enough about you to try to 'manipulate your emotions' your view of society is a narcassistic one. child.

  • The ignorance, sanctimony, and presumption in your silly screed is breathtaking. You get a thump on the head for talking out of your ass.

  • kirk getting some brown sugar

  • wow, your a total dick.

  • the script was originally written for spock to kiss uhura but shatner insisted it be him who did the scene... much to do about nothing?

  • shatner was sleeping with her

  • I knew about Nichelle Nichols and Gene Roddenberry, but Nichelle and Shatner?

  • "jungle fever"

  • actually i think it was the second american televised interracial kiss...idk, am i wrong?

  • No, I think you're right. On Wikipedia it says something about Sammy Davis Jr. kissing some music partner onstage at a televised show, some years previously.

  • He just couldn't resist that jab against George.

  • i know , right? i cant believe they really hate each other!

  • Well thats a lie, went to hawaii once where my sister (nurse) saw a black couple relaxing out in the sun without sun block, she told them to put sunblock on but they were so cocky they said fuck off to her. Later on they had to go to the emergency room for some severe sun burns, the guy in particular had 1 2nd degree burn on his shoulder the size of a football.

  • what a nonsense.... my friend is from africa..he's BLACk...most ameerican blacks are half white half black, so their skin is BROWN, like mexicans or arabs. yes, the darker you are the less you burn. but unless you are 100% black, like a dell keyboard, anybody burns. especially with the air pollution.

  • So, you insulted African Americans and now you're insulting homosexuals? Wow. So much anger...

  • that was meant for the other guy... i think

  • I believe there were two other series before Star Trek, but Star Trek was the biggest international show to every show this.

  • TJ HOOKER

    lol

    OMG!

    He's AGED

  • Yeah Ole Bill has quite a few firsts under his belt, including being the first guy to share a Nude Scene with Angie Dickenson in "Big Bad Mama". The Shats been Swankin for a long time. He's a Pimp.

  • yep , he really is a pimp!

  • I am glad that there will be more films....the actors have signed for two more movies...

  • "....the actors have signed for two more movies... "

...which is a standard procedure nowadays in case something becomes a box-office-hit.

  • Star trek 11 was excellent! If you notice at the end of the movie the Romulan ship entered the black hole, and was not completely destroyed! This left the franchise wide open to develop a Star Trek 12. The writers really need to some how have William Shatner (Captain Kirk) in as a cameo appearance. This would be spectacular! It's probably already in the workings?

  • I didn't see the movie, but a ship entering a black hole would mean it's quite completely destroyed.

  • Your probably right terminus1256? And I apologize to you, and everyone else! I hope that I did not spoil it for you? If you didn't see the movie yet?

  • Makes more sense to have had Chris Pine kiss Zoe Saldana after seeing this clip instead of Spock/Uhura kiss, n'est ce pas?

  • alternate timeline ;-)

  • Zoe Saldana was a babe...nuff said.

  • This video reminds me that I haven't had Thai food for a long time; not sure why though^^

  • There was a kiss between Robert Conrad (playing James West) and Filipina actress Pilar Seurat (playing Princess Ching Ling) in a 1966 episode of "The Wild, Wild West" called "The Night the Dragon Screamed".

  • why is he always talkin shit about sulu?

  • lol yeah this is like the fourth clip on here ive seen where hes doing that

  • lol its pretty funny :P

  • He's Canadian so likely to be not as racist as the southern whites who would object to a black kissing a white woman more than this.

  • Because sulu sucks!

  • Because Sulu didnt invite him to that wedding...lot of media hype so Sulu gets some play. Shatner probably "keeps the feud going" so they resolve it, and both get a little media time in.

  • And I have two kiss for everyone Who like the classic Star Trek employers too : !!! :)

  • If she blue or vulkanian dosent metter :)

  • you could cook her a bograč or pasulj maybe even ričet

  • The " bogracs " isn't the big pot ,)

You are maybe think the " kondér".

Or "vajling"-its the most bigger .)

And ye I like the friss rfesh bean with lot of "kenyér "-bread. Yust like my other favourite actor Terence Hill body .)

Ye I eat this a week per a mounth because I'm a poor man.But never mind body. Just hurt me if you like it. I'm a millioner in my spirit and this is the important I think if you are slav man you know too what is the no fear life so have a kiss for you too :)

  • lol... Wait, you kiss men!?!

  • I'm not sending no crap to nobody... Wait...who's that at my door....Arrrrggggghh.....

  • This is not the first interracial kiss, the first one was done by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez! You're only thinking black and white. AND it was the first BLACK/WHITE interracial kiss on tv. Of course DesiLu produced Star Trek!

  • This shows you all that there was no intelligent life up there either!!

  • I remember watching this episode knowing that it featured the first interracial kiss on tv (more or less). I thought it strange that, since the writer's knew this was a milestone event, they wrote the kiss as occurring under mind control. I would have liked the first interracial kiss to be a normal romantic kiss, but fortunately this kiss did not set the tone for interracial kisses to follow on TV. Still, a very courageous moment for all involved.

  • It was still a close thing; the network complained after seeing it and insisted that an alternate version was done where they didn't kiss; Shatner & Nichols went along, but apparently Shatner did something subtle to screw up each shot, including mugging for the camera. it wasn't apparent that he was screwing with the shot, so they went forward thinking it was ok.

  • DENNY CRANE!!!! We love you Bill!!!! Whatever role you do you are truly a living legend.

  • What about Lucy and Ricky? Unless they just mean black and white.

  • I hate to say it, but they weren't the first. Wikipedia has this entry:

In the 1968 episode "Plato's Stepchildren", Uhura is involved in an early TV portrayal of an interracial kiss. This is frequently misremembered as "first televised portrayal of an interracial kiss on United States television" even though it took place after Sammy Davis, Jr. and Nancy Sinatra had openly kissed on the variety program Movin' With Nancy in December 1967

  • Why would be be scared to kiss a black woman?

  • Are you afraid to kiss my ass

  • I'm a white guy and I would love to kiss her then and now she is a beauty! Please don't miss understand...I mean when a woman is beautiful she is simply beautiful no matter what color she is, do you know what I mean? I hope so!!!

  • Uhura was a fox!

  • @kytbradio i would too!

  • Yeah, I didn't really think there was a problem with it. He was just kissing a beautiful woman. Noting wrong with that!

  • yeah theres nothing wrong with it...i wouldent call her beautiful but yeah theres nothing bad about it..

  • Ah Star Trek.

    Always breaking new ground.

  • P.S,. My previously mentioned sister is now married 2 a man of Hawaiian descent. This does not bother me either. In fact, he and I are very good, close friends. Now, what does bother me is people who get up on soapboxes acting like race, skin color or ancestry automatically makes them better than some1 else (that includes whites, blacks, and every other race in the world). I'm not a very religious man, but I do believe we were all created equal and it's about damn time we started acting like it!

  • Thats why America cant move foward and get out of the mess we are in regarding so many real issues we have to deal with as a country. We are so bogged down in nonsense like this that we place things like the economic crisis the greed of the rich elite and the shipping of American. industry overseas. We enjoy being stuck on stupid and politicians and rich corporate fat cats enjoy seeing us mired in fear and superstition so we cant see our futures being looted.

  • Its just a video dude don't get a tumer over it

    seriously

  • I totally disagree with BitterCycle's comment. 1st of all (far as I know) I've never helped 2 destroy anything except my own damn sanity. (Not that it really needed any help.) 2ndly, I don't consider myself a hypocrite, especially when my own SISTER has dated a white guy, an Italian guy, an Asian guy, AND a Latino guy. This has never bothered me (P.S. she and I are black). Don't insinuate me 2 b a racist or a hypocrite. Unlike most people, I find beauty in all races and all people (only girls!)

  • DENNY CRANE!

  • Amtrekker > Shatner

  • such anger in these comments

  • Why are you allways commenting on George T.???

    Did He break your heart??????

  • subscribe to me and I'll kick someone in the balls just for you!

  • Xenophobia is a disease that effects uneducated people. Kiss whoever you want to of any color. I had my first interraccial kiss years ago and feel just fine. I think the generations after X realize this concept.

  • lucy and desi never kissed?

  • In my opinion, Star Trek's first "interracial kiss" was not between Kirk and Uhura - it was actually between Kirk and the Doman of Ellas played by Francis Nygen who had (I believe) Vitanmese and French in her background.

I think in the old days people wanted "interracial" to be between black and white - but they're more races out there than just black and white.

  • yeah but there are only 3 races to americans. were smart like that
