The first attempt by the judo gi guy (jujigatame) was ridiculous...Any blue belt in BJJ would have secured that one easily...After mounting, the same guy had several chances to go for a ude garami, all wasted ; )

So,yes! I have to say their ground skills is in a mediocre level, and this video shouldn't be viewed as a example of good ground game

Noriaki Kiguchi, founder of Combat Wrestling (Wrestling, Sambo, Judo mix, produced many great Shooto fighters) taught at Saitamas Super Tiger Gym from 86. Yoshinori Nishi is a Daido Juku champion. Daido Juku is a mixture of Judo and Kyokushin, the founder Azuma Takashi is a Jon Bluming (possibly the most inportant person in MMA/ full contact fighting) black belt.

Shooto is a spawn of Shoot Wrestling which comes from Catch Wrestling and later influenced by Freestyle Wrestling, Greco-Roman Wrestling, Sambo, Muay Thai, and Judo in the final stages. I asume the kimono was to benefit the Daidojuku fighter since the kimonos aren't in its curriculum.

It is clearly staged & in the favour of the guy in white. As other people here have stated it is part of a demonstration promoting martial arts, it is not a real mma match or fight or anything. Watch closely, the guy lets him do stuff! And as for seeing this in mma, dont make me laugh, you dont even see it in K1 which is kick boxing! What mma are you watching? I can't really see Fedor, Bj penn, Brett Rogers etc doing it & these are some of the top fighters.

@donnienlefty the fight may have been a demo but wasnt staged,it was part of the lumax cup in 95 or 96 in japan.Its not mma,its full contact jujitsu without headstrikes on the ground.There are vids on you tube of flying armbars in mma,rumina satos being the most famous.The white was favoured because he was better and bigger and sayama could never fight anyway,he has no credentials in combat sport.Of course you dont see it in k1 and brett is nobodys top fighter,hes average.

Both shooto and judo are grappling-based martial arts; therefore, some degree of stalemate is to be expected, particularly when the fight goes to the ground. On the other hand, both fighters had plenty of opportunities to go for chokes but avoided them for some unknown reason-- because of this, some criticism is called for.

i think the guy in the black, uses ninjutsu not shooto. If you take into account the way he moves, does flashy kicks and knows basic ground work.

The style the guy in the white uses, isn't so clear. I personally think he is a Judoka, who has done karate.

Which would explain he's sweep, and strong round house kicks (karate people are don't furry with kicks, they prefer 1 solid kick oppose to many weak ones).

Finally Jodoka's have leg locks, but its just not allowed in Judo tournaments.
