@judopathoftruth Nihon Kenpo *is* the atemi waza of Kodokan Judo; BJJ ne waza *is* the Osaka ground fighting system of Yataro Handa and Tanabe Mataemon, absorbed into Kano's curriculum and sent to America with Maeda *before* it was ever spun off into Kosen Judo. Learn the history of your sport.
Yes, they are in a low level of ground (newaza) proficiency...I will explain my opinion...
The first attempt by the judo gi guy (jujigatame) was ridiculous...Any blue belt in BJJ would have secured that one easily...After mounting, the same guy had several chances to go for a ude garami, all wasted ; )
So,yes! I have to say their ground skills is in a mediocre level, and this video shouldn't be viewed as a example of good ground game
Not daidojuku is judoka, not a real fight, is a exibition that did in a tournament in Japan where many martial artists involved, the tournament is called Lumax Cup, where judokas, karate sambok have very good results.
Satoru Sayama was a Kyokushin student of Mejiro Gym and Shooto founder. Noriaki Kiguchi, founder of Combat Wrestling (Wrestling, Sambo, Judo mix, produced many great Shooto fighters) taught at Saitamas Super Tiger Gym from 86. Yoshinori Nishi is a Daido Juku champion. Daido Juku is a mixture of Judo and Kyokushin, the founder Azuma Takashi is a Jon Bluming (possibly the most inportant person in MMA/ full contact fighting) black belt.
daido juku art is called "kudo", its a form of mixed art karate+judo+etc, i wonder how many MMA fighters use this in the tournaments. I am not a professional but kudo looks very effective to me.
@dancingmephisto no pro mma fighters are from kudo and it has a minority following but seems fun and is good to watch. The techs in kudo are the same ones in mma and all effective styles
Shooto is a spawn of Shoot Wrestling which comes from Catch Wrestling and later influenced by Freestyle Wrestling, Greco-Roman Wrestling, Sambo, Muay Thai, and Judo in the final stages. I asume the kimono was to benefit the Daidojuku fighter since the kimonos aren't in its curriculum.
poss staged in favour of white gi, or shooto guy is not xperienced fighter, those high & spinning kicks hint at that. also early on he spins & goes in close, not smart against bigger guy. white gi good martial artist but that wkd takedown at 3.20 seems staged, cant really c that happnin in mma fight. good demo tho
It is clearly staged & in the favour of the guy in white. As other people here have stated it is part of a demonstration promoting martial arts, it is not a real mma match or fight or anything. Watch closely, the guy lets him do stuff! And as for seeing this in mma, dont make me laugh, you dont even see it in K1 which is kick boxing! What mma are you watching? I can't really see Fedor, Bj penn, Brett Rogers etc doing it & these are some of the top fighters.
@donnienlefty the fight may have been a demo but wasnt staged,it was part of the lumax cup in 95 or 96 in japan. Its not mma,its full contact jujitsu without headstrikes on the ground. There are vids on you tube of flying armbars in mma, rumina satos being the most famous. The white was favoured because he was better and bigger and sayama could never fight anyway,he has no credentials in combat sport.Of course you dont see it in k1 and brett is nobodys top fighter, hes average.
@patio87 thats wat i thought too acctually the whole match seems rigged its the shooto guy seems really skilled and you just can tell his technical and speedy but that disappears for some reason which doesnt make sense..
@Neotrigunnerx youve got to be joking, the shooto lad is in black and did virtually nothing right the whole match. He hasnt a clue how to grapple.you do know he was a pro wrestler only with no fighting experience. He founded shooto but didnt fight
@Neotrigunnerx he has nothing to do with shootbox, thats a different sport entirely which has no groundwork involved.Sayama is shooto which was the first mma competition outside brazil in 1989.The standard in it is very high and all fights are real.
@patio87 it wasnt atakedown,it was a flying armbar. Its been done lots of times in both judo, bjj and sub grappling comps, even a few in pro mma.I do think this is a demo but an almost fully resisting one.Nishi was way better than the fat chap.
All you people who cannot read video descriptions are complete idiots. Seriously.
The guy in white is a Daido Juku fighter - a style of full-contact karate, using many Judo throws and locks. The fighter almost certainly will have a black belt in Judo as well as Daido Juku.
couldn't agree more! how thick r sum people. nice to c there are people on here who no about ma's and possibly hav trained. we seem to be few and far between. put it on the net and people think its gospel!
Guy in white moves like a Kyokushin Karate practitioner. Maybe Ashihara. He blocks and sweeps like one. But he doesn't lock up like a typical BJJ. He looks more like a newaza judo specialist.
that actually wouldnt matter if they were reversed. judo is about using ones force against them, so when in judo you do a throw, it doesnt take much strength. i also dont no y the judo guy was kicking, judo is a combonation of throwing grappling and chokes.
Actually Judo is a complete martial art including strikes. They just are not widely taught, and when they are it usually doesn't come until second degree.
@Skandornon judo has no strikes obviously and they arent taught at any grade.Theyre may be some strikes in the goshin katas but they arent used in any practice or randori and so are a waste of time and completely useless
@Skandornon Which makes it kinda pointless since there are martial arts that teach you the complete set i the beginning, which is why BJJ white belts have beaten judo black belts. Search that on youtube if you want to know the truth
Prob cos he aint soley a judo guy. prob trained in other styles and wot people on here gotta realise is no style wen it comes to ring fights is any better, they all hav pro's & cons and you hav to adapt wot u learn in dojo/gym for the ring and again in the street. nobody dresses up and lets u no when & how they gonna hit u! 4get about wot u see in the movies its about real life situations or sport, a little different to training in tma in dojo. 2 much 1 up stuff on these sites. xhibtion!
well spotted, also it is an exhibition match. when u c bjj vs tkd or jkd vs bxg etc the the style that is writton 1st always wins! nobody will put themselves or thier style getting beat! like admitting ur guilty or throwing money away.
as a fellow judo competitor it is great to see judo dominating the competition. In the end, the judoka has a more tactical mind and has superior technique to the shooto guy. The second throw by the judo guy makes me smile each time i watch it. Just a shame only 265,000 people have seen this fantastic fight.
Shooto is a combat sport that is governed by the Shooto Association and the International Shooto Commission. Shooto was originally formed in 1985, as an organization and as a particular fighting system derived from shoot wrestling. .
Practitioners are referred to as shooters, similarly to practitioners of shootwrestling. Shooto competitions are often considered to be mixed martial arts competitions, since they share similar rules to several other mixed martial arts competitions.
The word shooto is an English transliteration of 修斗 (pronounced shū-to), an ateji derived from the English word "shoot". The word 修斗 can be translated as "learn combat"
It is but unlike wrestling you can not only throw someone to the ground but you can apply a choke or a jointlock to your opponent. Notice they are wearing gloves so you know strikes are legal.
i would say its ninjutsu against judo. The black pants and the socs or what ever he has on the foot says alot. And the White guy is an explosive grappler with gi, problaby judo
At 50/51 seconds the word SHOOT can be seen on the back of the guy in black's jacket! The guy in white has certainly done a lot more than just Judo. His kicks at the start, and occasionally at other times during the contest, show that quite clearly.
Judo and BJJ are pretty much the same. That Shooto dude can't even afford pants, he's wearing stockings. And i must admit, who's trying to impersoante Bruce Lee here?
bjj and judo are similar, bjj focusus on locks, chokes and has very little throws and takedowns.while on the other hand judo focusus more on throws and much less on the ground and the only joint locks allowed are on the elbow.
Hmmm....if that guy is shooto then I have to say their striking has really evolved. Comparing those flash spin kicks to their current ultra-methodical style is like apples and oranges.
Actually, many Judo schools do not incorporate leg locks, as these are not allowed in Judo competitions; however, many Judo sensei do know and teach leg locks anyway.
Because he got his ass handed to him.He didn't know what to do on the ground and his stand-up was shit, all he did was try to look good bouncing on one leg...BULL!
Ah, I see. I thought you were just putting Shooto down in general for a second there. But then again, I think there was something about this match...I think it might have been Shooto before it became big and they were still testing things...not sure about that of course.
I feel that the Shooto guy defended adequately and began to exert some dominance towards the end of the match. Even then, however, the fighter in the white gi was better.
there ARE leg locks in judo and there are also punches and kicks in judo. but it is not trained in free practise because it is to dangerous. they are only trained in kata (predeterminaded training)
what the hell was with the ground work? half the time the judo guy just held him and did nothing and then he does a frickin flying armbar why couldn't he just strangle the guy?
Because the guy in the black gi also had some skill in groundfighting and generally defended well. Both shooto and judo are grappling-based martial arts; therefore, some degree of stalemate is to be expected, particularly when the fight goes to the ground. On the other hand, both fighters had plenty of opportunities to go for chokes but avoided them for some unknown reason-- because of this, some criticism is called for.
i think the guy in the black, uses ninjutsu not shooto. If you take into account the way he moves, does flashy kicks and knows basic ground work.
The style the guy in the white uses, isn't so clear. I personally think he is a Judoka, who has done karate.
Which would explain he's sweep, and strong round house kicks (karate people are don't furry with kicks, they prefer 1 solid kick oppose to many weak ones).
Finally Jodoka's have leg locks, but its just not allowed in Judo tournaments.
This is not true. Traditional Japanese jujutsu includes strikes, as does Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (although the effectiveness of strikes from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is debatable).
it is not that you cant. the mindset of jiu jitsu is to subdue your opponent with as little force as needed. punches break hands in the real world, chokes do not.
that doesn't look like judo to me. In judo there are no leg locks as the white dressed one was trying to perform. Besides shows good style in kicking. Maybe is a traditional jiujitsu fighter
I'm not sure if the fighter in the white gi is attempting leglocks so much as defending against them. This is an area which the fighter in the black gi had a genuine advantage.

At 50/51 seconds the word SHOOT can be seen on the back of the guy in black's jacket! The guy in white has certainly done a lot more than just Judo. His kicks at the start, and occasionally at other times during the contest, show that quite clearly.
pugilistica 2 years ago
this is not Judo vs shoot. It's Daidoujuku-Karate vs early days Satoru Sayama(Tiger mask,Sammy lee)who made Shooto later

couldn't it be traditional jiu jitsu? (guy in white gi)

Man...that judo guy was GAME! Clean as could be hoped for
G0dspelronin 3 years ago
Judo and BJJ are pretty much the same. That Shooto dude can't even afford pants, he's wearing stockings. And i must admit, who's trying to impersoante Bruce Lee here?
heliojanusz 3 years ago
bjj and judo are similar, bjj focusus on locks, chokes and has very little throws and takedowns.while on the other hand judo focusus more on throws and much less on the ground and the only joint locks allowed are on the elbow.
AL93000 3 years ago
Hmmm....if that guy is shooto then I have to say their striking has really evolved. Comparing those flash spin kicks to their current ultra-methodical style is like apples and oranges.

Judo...WOW!

they are practised in kata but not legal in comps, so technically they are in judo

Leg locks are in Judo you fool
Oneshot112 3 years ago
Actually, many Judo schools do not incorporate leg locks, as these are not allowed in Judo competitions; however, many Judo sensei do know and teach leg locks anyway.
NotSoPhotogenic 3 years ago
It looks more to me like he is defending against leg locks rather than actually utilizing them (the white gi fighter).

Shooto guy hasn't a fucking clue.
fomiz 3 years ago
Why you say that?
ReijiTaro 3 years ago
Because he got his ass handed to him.He didn't know what to do on the ground and his stand-up was shit, all he did was try to look good bouncing on one leg...BULL!
fomiz 3 years ago
Ah, I see. I thought you were just putting Shooto down in general for a second there. But then again, I think there was something about this match...I think it might have been Shooto before it became big and they were still testing things...not sure about that of course.
ReijiTaro 3 years ago
fuckoff, bite your nose technique is my fav.
fomiz 3 years ago
I feel that the Shooto guy defended adequately and began to exert some dominance towards the end of the match. Even then, however, the fighter in the white gi was better.

there ARE leg locks in judo and there are also punches and kicks in judo. but it is not trained in free practise because it is to dangerous. they are only trained in kata (predeterminaded training)

what the hell was with the ground work? half the time the judo guy just held him and did nothing and then he does a frickin flying armbar why couldn't he just strangle the guy?
hellspawndarkangel 3 years ago
He had him in half guard most of time.
Cheedillow 3 years ago
Because the guy in the black gi also had some skill in groundfighting and generally defended well. Both shooto and judo are grappling-based martial arts; therefore, some degree of stalemate is to be expected, particularly when the fight goes to the ground. On the other hand, both fighters had plenty of opportunities to go for chokes but avoided them for some unknown reason-- because of this, some criticism is called for.

FUCK that was an awesome takedown at 2:07... reacted at super human speeds.
Donbrashear 3 years ago
No. That was not super human speed. You learn these hits against the leg whenever someone overexposes his legs like the guy in this vid.
That guy has no good leg kicks - too slow compared to Taekwondo, and not powerful enough compared to Muay Thai.

i think the guy in the black, uses ninjutsu not shooto.

This is NOT Judo but Jiu-Jitsu. Kicking and punching in Judo is not allowed !
arjo63 3 years ago
In randori. This is not randori, but some full contact competetion. So it can be a judoka, I don´t know.
judokapavel 3 years ago 2
Um, just because he used a striking technique and a leg-lock doesn't mean he isn't Judoka. Jiu-Jitsu is groundwork by the way, no striking either.
Cheedillow 3 years ago
You can't kick or punch in jiu-jitsu either
Devonmeister 3 years ago
This is not true. Traditional Japanese jujutsu includes strikes, as does Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (although the effectiveness of strikes from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is debatable).
NotSoPhotogenic 3 years ago
I practice traditional jiu jitsu myself. And as far as I know, we definately practice strikes, kicks, pressure points, etc. etc. etc. :P
JorritL 3 years ago
it is not that you cant. the mindset of jiu jitsu is to subdue your opponent with as little force as needed. punches break hands in the real world, chokes do not.
spleenbuster 3 years ago
that doesn't look like judo to me. In judo there are no leg locks as the white dressed one was trying to perform. Besides shows good style in kicking. Maybe is a traditional jiujitsu fighter
izioxxi 3 years ago
I'm not sure if the fighter in the white gi is attempting leglocks so much as defending against them. This is an area which the fighter in the black gi had a genuine advantage.
