The"penny movie machines" were basically "Mutoscopes", which were popular in penny arcades from 1895 (the year in which they were first marketed) through the late '50s; the company that manufactured them, International Mutoscope, discontinued production of the "flip cards" that made the images move in 1949. They WEREN'T, however, in full color and featured "sound", as depicted here- and none of them lasted for more than 45 seconds...
