  • i can't fucking blame hispanics for hating this lol. he seriously does look mexican though

  • The character of Jose Jimenez was supposed to be a take on an immigrant's wide-eyed look at his new country. At the time of the show(1964), it was thought to make Jose a Puerto Rican, technically an American citizen, to avoid INS-type storylines. Jose was supposed to be a Jibaro, the PR equivalent of a hick, in order to further emphasise the point of fish-out-of-water. Jose was more or less Gomer or Goober with a Spanish accent.

  • i got this on a VHS at the one dollar store and they only had one copy

  • As time passed, Dana realized that such ethnic humor by a person not of that ethnic group was becoming offensive. Hispanic groups began protesting Dana's portrayal of the dim-witted Hispanic character. In 1970, Dana announced to ten thousand Mexican Americans attending a cultural pride festival that "after tonight, José Jiménez is dead". In 1997 Dana received an image award from the National Hispanic Media Coalition.

  • I thought Mr. Phillips was really a jerk to Jose. That's probably why I didn't feel too sorry for him when a year or two as Dr. Smith he freaked out at the sight of his own shadow.

  • ..a.year or two LATER, it should have said above.

  • i used to love it when he would go...''my name jose' jimenez''.

  • two intelligent for the front row

  • Hugh i think you better go back to taking your medication.

  • I remember this show's intro when Bill Dana stood next to a Fire Hose (Fire Jose) with a sad look on his face. That was funny. I wished you had that clip.

  • If you don't like it, move to Commie China.

  • Those of you who have a problem with Bill Dana for portraying an Hispanic might benefit from researching him a bit, for instance, I found this on the wikipedia page on José Jiménez (character):

"As time passed, Dana realized that such ethnic humor by a person not of that ethnic group was becoming offensive. In 1970 he announced that he would no longer effect the José Jiménez character. In 1997 Dana received an image award from the National Hispanic Media Coalition."

  • This show also introduced a young Don Adams...

    practicing his pre-"Get Smart" voice...

  • @RonaldVaughan - . . .as well as Jonathan Harris practicing his pre-"Lost in Space" smarminess!

  • Oh yes, the announcer is veteran radio/TV voice-over Ken Carpenter, who usually said things like, "'THE BILL DANA SHOW' is brought to you by...Crest, the only toothpaste acccepted by the American Dental Association. Is YOUR family a 'Crest Family'?" [Procter & Gamble was the show's sponsor].

  • growing up in houston in the 70's I performed in a professional production of "the King & I"... in yellowface. Fake eyelids, yellow makeup, the works (I'm a whitey). Then again, where were they going to find a bunch of Asian child actors in Houston in the 70's?

  • The Movie "The Right Stuff" is the thing

responsible for demonizing Bill Dana, there

were many other tv shows doing the same thing

and never got the same response from I Love Lucy

to Dani Thomas, Jack Benny, I Dream of Jeanie,

The Real McCoys, Bonanza, etc etc etc

  • I miss the bill dana show--It was the last time whites and latinos could poke fun at each other. Now, its considered racial discrimination.

  • This guy wasn't even Latino...this show was about whites laughing at Latinos, not with them.

  • What would they do to laugh at Latinos.

  • John Cleese from Monty Python did the same thing in Fawlty Towers with a englishman acting as a hapless hispanic bellboy named Manuel who spoke little english Hey you can call that political incorrectness on that but it makes the show even funnier with him around.

  • Hey, I'm sure back in the 1800s people thought seeing actors in blackface was a riot too.

  • Oh c'mon that's little bit below the belt I must say if you saw Fawlty Towers which there episodes on here anyway you'd wouldn't be so harsh.

  • But that's exactly what it is! It would be one thing if the vast majority of Latino portrayal on TV at the time was positive and this was done just for laughs. Watch any TV show or movie from that time and you'll notice that 99% of the portrayal was negative. I haven't seen those Monty Python episodes so I can't comment on those, but Jose Jimenez is just playing on ugly stereotypes to get a laugh.

  • Aren't we being a little too sensitive?

  • Care to explain why pointing out how somebody stereotypes ethnic backgrounds just to get a laugh out of the bigotry of others is "being a little sensitive", halbie71?

  • Maybe you should take a look at one of your own favorites videos: Waco's Spoof of Sarah Palin Interview Bush Doctrine.....

    Practice what you preach hypocrite!

  • Um, ok...so what exactly does a video spoof of the mediocre Sarah Palin have to do with stereotyping entire groups of people based on their ethnic and/or racial background?

  • Oh I see you can justify your video spoofs yet condemn other for theirs, sounds pretty hypocritical to me.

  • Sorry, apples and oranges. Your analogy does not work, since the video you speak of is about mocking Sarah Palin, not her racial background.

  • Comment removed

  • Sarah Palin represents Female/ White/Christian/Motherhood/Hard Working. Why do you condone a video that pokes fun at her & yet condemn Bill Dana?

  • mmm...no, sorry, Sarah Palin represents Sarah Palin. Last time I checked, the video you mentioned did not poke fun of all females, or all whites, or all Christians, or all mothers or all hard working people, so once again, your analogy is pretty weak. I won, you lost. Admit it.

  • You forgot to mention that she represents QUITTERS too...bwahahaha....

  • HughJardon69, typical statement from a hypocrite!

  • Go get a dictionary and learn what "hypocrisy" really means. Calling Sarah Palin an ignorant, ranting, whining quitter has nothing to do with her gender or race.

  • HughJardon69 liberals like you always have the justification for their actions even though it is hypocritical, lying. etc. People like you have no common sense.

  • halbie71, your senseless rambling isn't surprising given that you're a fan of "the Quitta from Wasilla". I gave you a specific example as to why calling Palin an ignorant person is not the same as making a racist/sexist remark against her, but you can't seem to explain why such a comment is hypocritical.

You say "liberal" like it's a bad thing, given the sorry state of the Republican party and the conservative movement in general.

  • I never said I was a fan, I just don't like liberal hypocrites such as yourself! Sorry state? Wait till the people get wise to how the Democrats are ruining our country, & then you will see the pendulum swing the other way. Mark my words sonny boy, I'm older, wiser & smarter than you.

  • Care to explain to me in detail why I'm a "liberal hypocrite"? You can't, so you simply resort to name-calling without backing up your statements with facts. If you want to see how the country was really ruined, all you need to do is look back at the last 8 years and see how Dubya and the party of borrow-and-spend and even bigger government (Republicans) ran it into the ground.

Sorry, but other than "older", I don't think any of those adjectives apply to you.

  • You spend your time making fun of Sarah Palin who by the has no bearing or power regarding national or international, policy while you buddy Obama & his fellow Democrats who have the power, are leading our country down the toilet. I don't think you really understand what is going on. It's difficult for a person with a rational mind such as myself to have a discussion with a person with an irrational mind.

  • You still haven't explained why making fun of the ignorant and clueless Palin is hypocritical. Once again, if I were making fun of her as a woman or as a white person, while lamenting that this idiot Bill Dana is playing on bigoted stereotypes, I'd be hypocritical. But I'm not doing either.

I couldn't help but chuckle at your last sentence. "Rational mind"....ha!

  • HughJardon69 you are probably beyond help!

  • You go HughJardon69. I'm sick of hearing that being liberal is bad. Republicans somehow got it into their heads that they are the only ones who are christians. One question: How did the two of you end up with an argument about Palin while watching this video?

  • Jonathan Harris played "Jose Jimenez"'s fussy supervisor ["Mr. Phillips"] on "THE BILL DANA SHOW"(1963-'65), as did Don Adams as "Byron Glick", the "house dick"- a forerunner of "Maxwell Smart". After Dana's show was cancelled in early 1965, both Harris and Adams achieved stardom in their own series.

  • That's Dr. Smith alright.

  • Hey-isn't that Dr. Smith from Lost in Space?

Gee, I don't remember this gem, thanks for posting it.

  • Those of you who remember Jonathan Harris from The Third Man, raise your hand.
