It's a sappy power ballad that Estefan performed with Nsync! This was obviously the best song choice for him, but he still tanked. The look on his face at the end of the song is priceless. They apparently find the performance bad, that's why the focus on other things going on for this kid, clothes, shoes, grandmother being proud...blah, but they never treated him badly as they did Sanjaya. Not even close. Corruptible judges...
He was never treated as bad as Sanjaya because he actually was good at the traditional pop in the style of the 50's, whereas Sanjaya was good at wearing crappy hair and not much else.
He had talent, this just wasn't the right format. You don't hear Frank Sinatra singing Motown or bubble-gum pop for a good reason. If he did, they were jazzed-up renditions. He didn't stand a chance on this show. But he did have talent. And I'm not even a fan, but he did well on certain nights.
This was his last performance on the show, well, at least till the next night which was the results show. It was the top 6 night of season 3 and the theme was Gloria Estefan.
Contrary to popular belief Simon did not slam him at all after that performance. It was pretty obvious to everyone that John was out of his element and most likely going home. Why add insult to injury? *cough*Randy*cough*
simon's comment...the last from a judge for john in this season is one of the rare comments on the past 6 seasons of AI that I can never forget, both the insult and the praise. With all the people ridiculing him, what struck me more is simon's praise. This dude was 16 and he was receiving the most insulting remarks both from the judges and the fans, yet he didn't make any violent reactions like some contestants. He was just quiet. He knows who he is, he knows what he's capable of. Impressive!
Looking back on this, I do feel bad for him. It almost seems like he just gave up at that point. He knew he didn't have a chance of winning at that point. The damage had been done. I will say even though I don't care for him, he was more talented than Leah and Matt, and at least on par with JPL and Camile, which says A LOT about AI3.

I mean, John can modify some notes but it just leaves you thirsting even better performances after this. Too flat, too dry, too dull. On some oldie's song, he was good at but songs like these, he just murders them. I even turned up the volume to listen carefully on his dreaded flat notes.
