  • Just ain't the same without the guy who wrote the songs = DICKEY BETTS

  • First ABB was and still is unreachable.Nobody comes closer to Duane the Great...

  • OWWWWWW!!!! LOVE IT! Thanks so much for capturing this!

  • quit comparing and just fucking listen!

  • they may be a "TRIBUTE" band in that they do pay homage and respect to the original band and sound everytime they step on stage. But as far as you mean it there ewaters..................

you don't know what the hell your talking about. For Christ sakes you know so much about the Allmans that you think Derek is Butchies son.............this is still the best live performing band in the world!

  • That's right....NEVER EVER mention Butch's son Derek. Butch doesn't have a son Derek. Dick Head.

  • All this judgment. So much beauty in every Artists' expression. Love it all, especially with these two INCREDIBLE slide guitarists. Bless them all man.

  • YEA IT'S OK BUT LETS FACE IT, WRITE IT YOURSELF! THIS IS A TRIBUTE BAND TO SAY THE LEAST, ALSO....NEVER EVER MENTION BUTCH'S SON DEREK IN THE SAME BREATH AS DUANE!! END OF STORY! NOPE! END OF SUBJECT! PERIOD! NO MATTER WHAT YOU SAY HE IS ONLY COPYING SOMEONE, WRITE IT YOURSELF OR SIT DOWN SON!!!!!!!!

  • I'm listening to this on maybe the worst set of headphones ever made, and it sounds fucking fantastic.

  • blue sky always puts a big ol grin on my face. god bless the allman brothers!

  • Check out Jack Pearsons. solo, with the Brothers,of Blue Sky.No hate on Derek but Jack Pearson blows him away.TYPE IN BLUE SKY PEARSON SOLO ,ITS ON YOUTUBE

  • Holy crap this is freaking amazing! Duane set the bar for slide guitar and blues in general, and every ABB guitarist since has been amazing! Never forgetting Dickey of course...but Warren and Derek are unbelievable, I hope I can see them live some day.

  • Just can't see comparing today's band, or any other incarnation, with the original lineup. Warren is really good. Derek is an other worldly virtuoso. But Duane was a genius, both as a player and band leader. When he died so did the incendiary magic. If you don't believe me listen to the first four albums, then try Brothers and Sisters. No comparison, at least for my money.

  • Amazing that he can do this song electric. I'm glad Derek Trucks is around. He certainly knows his roots. From what I've seen he seems like a great person too. A man could do a lot worse.

  • Best three guitar players for the ABB: Duane, Dickey, Derek1

  • spirits never die

  • I can't wait to go and see them again, and take my daughter this time. She's old enough.

  • This is the stuff that science can't measure, can't put under a microscope. It is a group of humans just feeling something together and it doesn't ever come out quiet the same as when they practiced it, but it is perfect just the same... It's GREAT music whoever is playin' the slide. I don't know what all you EXPERTS are complaining about, Derek vs Duane vs Warren. I don't get it. It's the Allman Brothers man,,,

  • @vivian2gin Exactly...they are all spectacular, and everyone has a favorite version of a given song. It doesn't make one any better or worse than the other. I wonder if there is a console recording of this version available anywhere?

  • This is the stuff that science can't measure, can't put under a microscope. It is a group of humans just feeling something together and it doesn't ever come out quiet the same as when they practiced it, but it is perfect just the same...

  • @vivian2gin well the science of this is clear. The current version of the ABB is much like a tribute band. Gregg, Butch and Jaimoe are older and just don't have the energy, magic and vibes to match what they did back during the Fillmore East/Eat a Peach days and Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes and Otiel are all great musicians but when you listen to Fillmore East, Eat and Peach and even Dickey Bett's blues solo on Jelly, Jelly on Brothers and Sisters is becomes clear, don't equal the original band.

  • greg's playing ability far surpasses duane's ability any day in my book

  • You got to love Dickie, he is good dude, wrote some of the most beautiful songs of all time, and when he was on, his guitar playing sounds like something you will hear at the pearly gates. New lineup is great regardless.

  • The Allman Brothers in any permutation will always be joyful to behold. One of the greatest bands ever to stand up and play. Young Trucks is the godchild of that legacy.

  • lets just say they are all amazing guitar players , Duane, Dickey, Derek and Warren, and for the later to play this is a tribute to the greats before them, I take my hat off beautifully done

  • lets just say they are all amazing guitar players , Duane, Dickey, Derek and Warren, and for the later to play this is a tribute to the greats before them, I take my hat off beautifully done

  • man people need to get over the whole is it Dickey, Duane or who it is and just appreciate how fricken good this song was. Obviously both Warren and Derek looked up to those guitarist that came before them and this is a great fricken rendition of those two songs. .......I like it atleast.....................Jobu

  • enjoy the changes the allman brothers live in all of us. did you see the change

  • Really is my favorite acoustic song. seemingly so simple yet who else has written anything close. and, while this is a great lineup, it is just not the same without Dickey. He really has written the most beautiful songs.

  • @Mockingbird5150: I agree - the Allman Brothers aren't the same band w/o Dicky Betts. I saw them a few years back right after DB quit them, and they were terrible in live performance. What a letdown...

There's no ABB without Dickey - that's this old fan's opinion.

  • @GeorgiaBoy1961 Dickie had the heart and the licks to go with the original ABB, it dont sound the same without ole DB, just THIS old fan's opinion

  • @bigoutlaw1 Butch Trucks(original drummer) says Warren and Derek are better technically that Duane and Dickey and that Dickey didn't even have the chops to do some of the songs he actually wrote later on. So to drummer Butch Trucks, this version of the ABB is the best ever. But I agree, to an old fans like us, I just don't hear it. I don't hear this band really turing on the magic and the fire like the original. I think part of Butch's problem is he is kin to Derek and hates Dickey. Fuck Butch!

  • @boblackey1 I understand, hating Dickey makes a difference

  • @bigoutlaw1 I don't hate Dickey. I'm of the impression Butch Trucks does. Didn't he say he was glad Dickey didn't show for the 40th ann. run at the Beacon? Butch didn't even want Dickey invited and told Rolling Stone magazine that everybody who played with Duane was invited EXCEPT Dickey. But somehow they claimed they invited Dickey anyway. It is said Warren and Derek insisted on it but Betts claimed he never actually got one and would have come if Gregg had called him on the phone. Fuck Butch.

  • @boblackey1 No I meant Butch hating Dickey. It doesnt make sense that everyone would be invited except Dickey. I beleive Betts if he says he never got the invite

  • @boblackey1 I agree, Butch is a &*%%%##. The current line up doesn't sound half as good as the original allman brothers before Duane died. Not even close. There's no direction, nothing new that's worth listening too. Anytime I hear them playing they play the same stuff that the originals improvised over the years. And Derek plays too many notes. He never leaves space in between notes...ever...it sounds too muddled. Duane was simply the greatest ever, original, and creative genius.

  • @rudyc1 Yeah you got that right. Just listen to any tape of the original lineup or better yet listen to Live At Fillmore East and Eat A Peach and the Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, Otiel version of the Allman Brothers sounds like kids when you put it up next to Duane Allman, Dickey Betts and Berry Oakely. Hell even Butch, Gregg and Jaimoe sound better then. The closest to the original line up to me was the early 90's with Dickey, Warren and Allen Woody. Allen was more like Oakely

  • I think people forget who wrote this song............

Last year Greg didn't even come out until they finished this song when they opened with the second set this way. All they did was show Duane's picture on the background video.

dickey wrote bluesky; it was his wife's name. Duane had the first solo, then into dickey's. Dickey carried that band for a llllllllllong time.

  • Can't leave this thread without putting in a good word for some other members of the Allman's story, Les Dudek - whose slide playing on "Ramblin' Man" will live forever, and also "Dangerous" Dan Toler, another killer player from Duane's solo days in the 1980s.

In all the discussion about the old versus new line-up, forgot to give props to Berry Oakley - man, do I miss that guy's playing!

  • @GeorgiaBoy1961 Dickey does ALL the solos on Ramblin' Man with Les Dudek playing the additional electric guitar. On Jessica Les Dudek plays acoustic guitar and really stands out on the track. Back then some thought they were going to invite Les Dudek to join the band but they decided to add a piano player (Chuck L.) to fill the void out of respect to Duane. Also they played as a five man band for a year. I saw that version of the band in Jan 1972 live and Dickey was the only lead guitar player.

  • @boblackey1: Was Dudek playing slide on "Ramblin' Man" or was Dickey? Whoever did the job did it right...

Betts got overshadowed by Duane and then Gregg Allman for so long, that folks forget what a great performer, player, and writer he is.

  • @GeorgiaBoy1961 I had an opportunity to speak with Dickey on his tour bus in 1986 in North Carolina and he put up with me asking all kinds of questions about the ABB. Yes that is Dickey playing all lead and slide parts. Les Dudek plays second lead guitar and he and Dickey plays the same licks together (harmony or twin gutiar) here and there such as the little lead up to the middle solo in the song. Dickey said that is Gregg Allman singing back up &Berry Oakely on bass.. his last in the studio.

  • @GeorgiaBoy1961 I was suprised by Dickey when I ask him who is singing back up on Revival from Idlewild South. Dickey said "I know it doesn't sound like it, but that is everybody in the band". I said "You mean even Butch Trucks and Jaimoe?" and he said "yes it is all six of us". Well that would be Gregg, Duane, Dickey, Berry, Butch and Jaimoe singin "people can you feel it, love is everywhere".

  • As brilliant as these guys are, they aren't the same as the original lineup; without Dicky Betts, there isn't an Allman Brothers as far as I'm concerned. Warren Haynes is a monster, no doubt.... just miss the old lineup is all...

  • Simply Awesome! Makes me want to become a better guitarist!

  • If Duane is God, then Derek is Jesus. Unbelievable playing.

  • Could bring on a spell of nostalgia for sure. Nice video/audio recording of this over the top performance by the Allman Brothers Band. All in standard tuning right?

  • @jojoguitar i think derek is in open E 99% of the time, he is just used to playing that way

  • so crunchy

  • After all these years...... how wonderful. Hearing Duane's Little Martha actually brought tears to my eyes.... rest in peace, man. Like Hendrix, we lost you way too early.

  • Like my brother says..... Its a HALL OF FAMER!!!!!

  • Beautiful music, stuff like this has gotta make ya feel good.

  • wowwww

  • When it starts, In the crowd there are people talking. With music like this, everyone should have stoped for a second and listened, IMHO. Take time for the beauty.

  • regardless that rt there is bad ass

  • gregg prolly was cryin durin this, no doubt its is brother

  • Long live the skydog

  • Awesome

  • when i saw dickey with the band during the tour in 99 he dropped his guitar during 'blue sky' so i think the band was justified in voting him off. derek has done a FINE job for the last 11 years of touring making my shake my ass just as hard as dickey did.

  • Apparently you're trying to create an argument I won't be involved in. I have not questioned the importance of Dickey's contribution, nor the greatness of the 1st lineup. Having said that, your opinionated memories do not determine whether they should still exist minus Dickey. Furthermore, you either know nothing about music or haven't bothered to listen if you Derek a "2". As a working musician (as in people pay me to sing and play guitar), I find Derek to be the best guitarist out there.

  • @tonymenown As a musican and guitar player, personally I rate Derek Trucks higher than Warren Haynes. I'm talking about contributions to the development and sound of the Allman Brothers Band. Haynes wrote or co-wrote several songs that are part of the ABB history and neither Haynes or Derek come close to thecontributions Dickey Betts made to their original sound and evolution. What stands today as the Allman Brothers owes as much to Dickey Betts as Duane and Gregg Allman. Those are the facts!!

  • @boblackey1 - ok you can argue that derek is a "better" guitar player than warren and it could be a legit argument. but as far as being a total musician goes, much as I love Derek --and I really do-- Warren runs circles around him. Derek hasn't written a tenth of the songs that Warren has. Most of the songs Derek's band plays are covers. Warren is everything you could need in a musician. he writes, sings, can play lead or rhythm, and he is THE LEADER on stage in whatever band he's playing in.

  • @boblackey1 - con't

Derek is something special, I will agree with you there, but as far as who's the better musician I have to go with Warren every time. But lucky us, we get to see them both, TOGETHER, for as long as ABB keeps touring. For as awesome as derek and warren are on their own, they both kick it up to another level together.

Long live ABB because when it's all over who knows if these two guys will ever play together again.

  • @boblackey1 - "What stands today as the Allman Brothers owes as much to Dickey Betts as Duane and Gregg Allman"

no doubt dude but the current lineup kicks ass too.. just saw them at roseland and they were tight as ever.

  • @tonymenown - no you're totally right. it's crazy to start this old vs new crap. maybe it works with other bands but ABB just happened to get lucky they they dound these two guys who are phenominal and fit perfectly. All props to Dickey, but the current lineup does him and all his music due justice and then some.

  • I'm not attempting to minimize Dickey's contribution to this institution of American music. However his choices led to his being ousted, plain and simple. Maybe they should've folded the band at that time, I can't answer that. I have followed this band since their return in 1989 and this lineup brings a consistently strong performance every time. I'm too young to have witnessed the original lineup, but that music is pretty special. I see a lot of shows, and there is no finer act working TODAY.

  • @tonymenown Oh yes they are all very good musicans. And Dickey brought Dickey into the ABB to do Duane's parts on the old stuff and contribute to the new songs. He and Warren wrote several together. When Duane died and then Oakley, it changed the sound of the ABB. When Dickey was voted out by his partners, it changed it even more. Now, most of the time, it really doesn't sound like the ABB even when Warren and Derek are tossing in Duane and Dickey licks which I wish they wouldn't even do.

  • @tonymenown I guess you will just have to trust this old guy here or listen to closing show at the Fillmore on the new Eat A Peach CD and Fillmore East and to me, it is not even a contest. The original ABB is far, far more magical and creative than today's lineup. I think my favorite lineup next to the original was in the early 90's with Dickey, Warren and Allen. We didn't expect Warren and Allen to clone Duane and Oakely and the rest of the band was original so it was a 7 with the original a 10

  • @tonymenown To me Dickey's contribution to the ABB sound is a 10. Same with Gregg and Duane. Berry Oakley about an 8 and the drummers are about an 8. Warren is about a 5 and Derek is about a 3 or 2. Revival, Liz Reed, L.B. in A Minor, Blue Sky, Ramblin' Man, Jessica, Southbound, High Falls, Crazy Love, Seven Turns, No One Left to Run With, Change My Way of Living, vocals on several classics and a guitar style and tone that was the Allman Brothers sound as much as any other player then & now.

  • @boblackey1 - look if you want a band that sounds exactly like it did in 1972 then go and listen to tapes from 1972. Personally I like the fact that the band has evolved over time, and that is 100% thanks to warren and derek, who both insisted upon it. they only way they would play is if they felt they were breaking new ground. and they have been, together, for a decade now.

  • @dano1881 That is exactly what I do. The original band, Duane, Dickey, Berry Oakely, etc were so much better and so much more exciting that this version of the ABB, that I get bumbed out watching Warren and Derek, two fine guitar players, reduced to playing Duane and Dickey licks and being replacement players just so Gregg and Butch Trucks can have an Allman Brothers. Duane died and Dickey was voted out yet they still play Dickey's Blue Sky, Jessica, Revival, Southbound, Liz Reed. It sucks!!

  • @boblackey1 man while i respect yo viiews an probs very much digg the abb sound as you do ( duane,Dickie an berry) this is still damn good, an i'm sure that, wait...i'm real high an just heard them go back into little martha....niiiice!

  • @Talesofspace8 I didn't say it wasn't any good. All the men in today's version of the ABB are very good. But trust me. If you had a DVD of the original ABB, say closing night at the Fillmore, and a DVD of the current ABB, you would never play the current ABB after seeing the original. Duane, Dickey and Oakely absolutely put the mojo on Warren, Derek and Otiel. Plus the old guys, Gregg, Jaimoe and Butch were young and full of energy and dope then. The original IS the Allman Brothers Band!!!!

  • @boblackey1 haha yeah man, the original is mostly ALL i listen too! even unsung gems ike 'every hungry woman', the slide at the beginning of that i'm tryin to learn, sound's like nothin i ever heard, or can play, such magik in those early recordings

  • @Talesofspace8 hahaha right on man!

  • Who knows what really happened? I read in print where Gregg and Derek sent out an open invite to DB. From an audio interview with Butch and Stef Scamardo's show on Sirius, it appeared both Butch and Warren personally invited Dickey, as did ABB management. Sadly, a missed opportunity. I hope Mr. Betts continues to fight the good fight.

  • @tonymenown All I can say is Duane Betts and even Dickey said they never got invited by anyone in the band. Only a fax from the ABB manager. According to what fans said at a show Dickey did just a day or so before the Beacon run, Dickey said he would come if he got a call from Gregg. I can only guess Dickey either decided "f... it" and didn't come or Gregg never called. But who here can deny that Dickey was as big a part of that band as Gregg and a bigger part than Warren or Derek ever will be?

  • Damn, this is sweet. But I'm always conflicted about them playing Dickey's tunes, man. It's like, ok, we know why you had to boot him, but the guy's got nothing now - at least leave his friggin' songs alone! It's like they're saying, "sorry, dude, you gotta go, but we can't do without those great compositions of yours - Blue, Liz, Jessie - they're too important a part of our repertoire." They obviously stay from Ramblin', so why doesn't it extend to the others? I feel bad for the guy, man.

  • @1PinkFreud your right but 2.3 of the songs you said are instamentals and gregg, otiel,or warren dosent want to sing ramlin man and i recall the last time somebody sang blue sky wason in 2004 when gregg did at the fox in atlanta...but i see where your comin from.

  • @gmfwilly Yeah it is a sorry situation. In some ways, it may have been better for the ABB to just break up when it became impossible for Gregg and Butch to work with Dickey anymore. It's like the Rolling Stones voting out Keith Richards. According to a post Butch made on the ABB site, he was going to quit due to Dickey and later he found out Gregg was also going to quit from his wife. He called Gregg and that is when they decided rather than they leave the band, let's get rid of Betts.

  • @boblackey1 It is sad but i think they made the right decision i think they did what is best for the band and hey look at them now they might be playing better than ever.

  • @gmfwilly I'm over 60 like Gregg, Dickey, Butch and Jaimoe and I was nuts about the original band. We went to hear them as often as possible and when Duane got killed, it was such a shock to this amazing trip all the fans and the band were on. I think anyone who saw the original ABB, Gregg, Duane, Dickey, Berry, Butch and Jaimoe..would agree the ABB today ain't even close to the energy and magic we experienced. With Warren and Derek playng the guitar parts, it don't sound like the ABB we knew.

  • @boblackey1 Your right it dose not sound like the original hey I'm 15 never saw dickey but i've heard so much old ABB and in my mind if duane didn't die he would have just kept getting better and better and better...and i think that ABB now comes on the stage with so much energy.

  • @gmfwilly Well I'm 62 and I wish I were your age. 15. I don't like getting old. No doubt the ABB today does have energy, but I sware it is maybe a 6 or 7 and the original on their best nights was a 10. The energy, creative jucies and the magic was just unmatched. And if you listen carefully to live original ABB, you will see Duane and Dickey ARE the ABB guitarwise. As good as they are, Warren and Derek, as far as doing it the ABB way, can't touch what Duane and Dickey were doing back then.

  • @boblackey1 Well i think they come with a lot of energy still with a little funk added to it and i was listing to a live recording from 1970 and gregg does not come with a lot of energy in his vocals like he used too but i still think derek and warren are pretty close to being at the same level duane and dickey were..but thats just my opinion.

  • @gmfwilly That is cool. But I would imagine Warren and Derek would be the first to admit that they are filling in for Duane who is dead and Dickey who was kicked out by the other three originals by a vote of 3 to 1. And they would admit that the REAL ABB sound and the real deal would be the twin guitar which was originated and developed by Duane and Dickey. Indeed I remember reading Warren saying he wouldn't do the ABB if it were standing in the way of Dickey returning to the band.

  • @boblackey1 - derek and warren DO play twin guitars in all the places where they are supposed to. duane and dickey didn't do that ALL the time and neither do derek and warren. anyway you can't go by this version of Blue Sky... it is a bastardized version... no lyrics, basically just a guitar solo.. I'll be greg wasn't even on stage for this. he sure as hell wasn't when they did this in Harlem last year. (Which I have to tell you I kind of think lacks a little class on greg's part).

  • @boblackey1 - i respect that. I never saw the original 2 so i can't argue otherwise. all i can say is that in the 20-30 times i have seen ABB in NY over the last 10 yrs, I have seen some truly unbelievable shit guitar-wise that has blown my mind and keeps me coming back.so no,they are not duane and dickey;they are derek and warren,&that is pretty fucking good. Nowhere on earth can you see two better guitarists together on the same stage. Props to Dickie and Duane though. this is their music

  • Is warren playing in Open E or standard on this one? His right hand positions for little martha appear to be different than how it is played in open E.

  • it's just not the same song without Dickey : /

  • Was at this concert. Amazing version of the the best song ever by the best band

  • Comment removed

  • I can play these songs learned them a long time ago,Little Martha almost at it's inception the rest just the Bros. They go on forever!

  • Dickey was invited and chose not to come. Not just by Derek and Warren, but Gregg and Butch extended a hand for this occasion. Again, he decided against it. Brilliant musician, nonetheless.

  • @tonymenown As best as I come pin down on this from interviews with Butch and what fans seeing Dickey at his shows at the time of this Beacon run is this. Dickey only received an invitation through his personal manager who received it from the Allman Brothers manager. No one IN the band ever contacted Dickey. Dickey told one fan just days before this concert he would come if Gregg called him. I don't know. I guess Gregg didn't call.

  • Kind've a nice way of dealing with the elephant in the room- i.e the fact that the two previous great guitarists that the band is really known for, Duane and Richard, are not there. Having Derek and Warren together in the ABB is really a treat that really makes them almost as important as the original guitarists in the band...that's the way I see it anyway...

  • I love it! Great job. I'm 57 and saw the orig. many times and was stunned to learn that death could touch me and mine at a young age. I've seen Warren many times and Derek a couple and they are Masters. But you got to understand, people my age lived the music and the times back then and nothing can be "better" than the orig. to us, it was our life and time back then. It doesn't mean we can't absolutely love this also. Glen

  • im 22. i love the old i love the new....i dont get duane and i dont get dickey, so i will take warren and derek! i have seen them both and i love them both! it's amazing to see them keeping this spirit and these songs alive!

  • Sad that this band has come to this.....

  • This is brilliant - it pains me that Dickey was not here and part of this, but I feel that, at least Warren and Derek (and probably Oteil) were partially paying tribute to Dickey and this beautiful song (Blue Sky) while paying tribute to Duane.

  • @Jamdor78 I heard the original ABB play many times. I"m 62 now and back when I was early 20's I was really into going to ABB shows. Believe it or no Duane, Dickey and Berry Oakely were hotter and more exciting to see than the ABB today. Even Gregg, Butch and Jaimoe had more energy. But the all were in their 20's then so that may have been why. Original ABB better than todays ABB in everyway. Wish you young fans could have been there. But I'm old now so maybe you are better off than me.

  • @boblackey1

I'm 50 and had Eat a Peach when it came out. I didn't get to see what was left of the band until 1980. I enjoyed the early 90's version and have learned to love the current version, but I still enjoy Dickey's songs and playing the most; I got to interview him in 2003 and he was very friendly and expressive about his music and the ABB.

  • Excellant!

  • Was Duane Allman playing the guitar on the studio version of Blue sky?

And was he playing with his fingers or a pick?

  • @SharkaZz Duane usually played with a pick except when he played slide. I saw a bunch of shows back then. On Eat A Peach, Duane plays the first solo, then he and Dickey play the little bridge together, then Dickey plays. Also that is the way they did it live the one time I heard the original band play Blue Sky. Duane played first and Dickey second. And Duane didn't use a slide.

  • It really is Duane. He came back to be with the brothers, but I wonder what Berry is doing?

  • @galidune, wow, I thought I was the only one who believed that Derek channels Duane. This gives me hope. Maybe my boyfriend will come back to be with me. Welcome back, Duane, and hurry back, Michael.

  • @Suzywriter No, I don't think he channels Duane. He IS Duane. I believe in reincarnation. The karmic patterns are too similar. It has to be him.

  • @galidune That's even better. :)

  • amazing................................

  • they shoulda whiped out the acoustic but still great

  • i do like derek trucks and i have some of his solo stuff and hes a great player but dicky betts energy and passion i just can get enough of he blows this out of the water no disrespect just my opinion

  • they should of did little martha on acoustic

  • woah brother, respect to the legends but these boys take in thier own unique direction and rock out when they get there while somehow paying tribute to the good ol boys and then taking it into soome sort of modern high energy jam, i was at this show, and i was blown away.

  • Well guess Im a purest, only brother left in band is a roll over. No respect for the dickhead. And no disrespect to you fans, I am not a fan of a sell out roll over on your own is all.

  • theres 3 brothers left, and this band was nothing after duane died until warren revived SOME of that past glory, and i mean derek idk how anyone can hate the guy he's an amazing talent that was willing to step up and fill someones shoes over his own career, on tap of that have you seen a dickey solo recently, its like greg singing when hes too drunk. I wish it was still duane, barry, and betts but take the good with the bad, these guys put on a show and obviously love doin it

  • If you don't know that sound, then you're a tard... that is the brothers and grizzly adoms DID have a beerd...

  • Warren can play just about anythg he sets his mind to an awesome & very under-rated player who kept the ABB alive during lean & turmoultuous times.. mainly the 80's

  • @MOSKII58 You must mean the 90's. Warren didn't join the ABB until 1989. Also he was in Dickey's solo band in 1988. The ABB didn't play much in the 80's. They toured in 1980 and 1981 but only played a few gigs in 1982 and 1986 all with Dan Toler and Dickey Betts on guitar. Then in 1989 they toured with Warren in support of Dearms boxset.

  • it is indeed Duane. Duane had a much more clear tone then Dickey. and generally Duane played towards the middle of the fretboard whereas Dickey would play at the top of the fretboard in his solos and would have a more scratchy tone with some feedback. distinguishing the two guitarists from each other.

  • Yeah the major tone difference between Duane and Dickey is which pickup they used more in solos. Duane used the neck pickup (more smooth sound) on the les paul and dickey generally used the bridge pickup (more treble sound)

  • @waverunna1200 First time I saw ABB Duane was using a Fender Strat and Dickey a big Gibson (ES-335?) then for about a year Duane used a Paul and often a strat on slide and Dickey played a sunburst Strat. Dickey then to a Gibson SG for just a few months and when Dickey went to a Paul, he gave the SG to Duane for slide. The last few years Dickey was in ABB he was back on a Strat& Butch &Gregg told Jaimoe to vote to kick him out or they would quit.

  • @DuaneAllmanisGod Sorry but you are wrong. The first Blue Sky solo on Eat A Peach is by Duane Allman and it was his last recording without a slide. The second solo is Dickey. Betts has always played second on Blue Sky. When Duane died he switched from first solo to second guitar solo on Liz Reed. Fillmore Liz Reed is Dickey first, Duane second just like Idlewild South.

  • i always thought Blue sky was dicky on the entire recording, 1st & 2ND SOLO'S & DUANE JUST JOINED IN ON THE DUAL PARTS but if you say so- i'll take your word for it. its usually very easy to tell them apart, style & tone..

  • @MOSKII58 OK. But don't worry, it IS correct. Us old ABB fans figured out who did what way back in the early 70's. And after hearing Fillmore, Idlewild South & Eat a Peach thousands of times, by 1980 we could just tell by the style. Duane and Dickey actually sound very different from each other after you get use to them. Saw them do B.Sky live too and Duane took first solo and Dickey second just like the record.

  • @boblackey1 thats what i said my friend, i was saying that the first solo was duane and then i described the differences in the sound and tones of the guitar which is what may have confused you.

  • 6 weeks to the nyc shows have tickets for 2 of them looking forward to the new venue

  • the first solo on eat a peach is most definitely dickey...

  • it's duane bud, no doubt about it. His tone, his licks.

  • joebrassmonkey is right. Duane first and Dickey second. When you really study Duane and Dickey, they sounded completely different. Different licks, tone and style. But that, along with bass player Berry Oakely is what made the originial band even better that this line up on this video. Having all the players in their 20's (Gregg, drummers) help too. That original band not only laid the foundation of the ABB sound, they were SO hot and full of energy.

  • duane

  • Saw them do Blue Sky once with Duane and Duane took the first solo. Both Duane and Dickey played very long solos and both solos got very intense. The solos were so long and not being familure with the song then, when Dickey started singing the second verse, I had forgotten it had vocals. Also for some reason at that show, Berry Oakley did almost all the talking to the audience between songs. Gregg and Duane were quiet. Maybe they were too high:-)

  • is the first solo on blue sky (the original on eat a peach) played by duane or dickey? i've heard it both ways.

  • Superbe

  • unbelievable

  • amen, dono and boblackey!!! agree with ya 110%

  • people can you hear it love is everywhere!

    that´s so graceful;

warren and derek and the godgiven tone!!

just stop the discussion about who´s better - duane/derek or

dickey/warren; they have their own style; that´s it...

  • @donoftheecho you know what i love bout that song? apart from everythin?! "everyone is singin, there's no one left to fight"

  • they played little martha every night in some way shape or form, one night oteil did it solo on his bass

  • closest to duane ive ever heard!

  • Hate to throw water on it here. I too think Derek, Warren and Jimmy are mosters. But I'm so old that I'm an ABB fan from back in 1970 and without Dickey's sound there is nothing left of the original front line. To me it reduces Derek and Warren to tribute band kind of players. I'm glad the ABB plans to scale back after this year and give Warren and Derek more time to play in THEIR bands rather then having to play Duane and Dickey licks at times and pay tribute to the past.

  • the solo jimmy herring did in les bres in a minor was nothing i ever seen before i think jimmy, derek and warren are so good together on stage u just feel and see the magic on stage and i think derek and warren are a great match together on stage so i hate that dickey is not in the band but on the other hand its good too cause u see derek come out in his playing to see that hes really there to make good music and he's a hell of a player

  • yea dude I got the liz reid with all 3....

  • Awsome fantastic .. I think thats how you spell fantastic .. this is some sweet tunes through some FINE vintage American gear.... God Bless the 1961 SG LES PAUL and PAF pickups and SETH LOVER..... Yesir yesir indeed ...

  • Long LIve The Allman Brothers Band!

  • I too am lucky enough to say i saw the orginal lineup 3 times and saw the first show they played after Duane's death i remember those times well. And yesthe ABB in 2009 are still crankin it i hope they make it to 50 years but Derick and Warren play almost as well as Dicky and Duane used to if you havent seen them in years go its worth it.

  • I saw the original line up also but I appreciate that the music lives on and grows with two of the best players ever. It would be a shame if we didn't have them and this could be the last year.

  • amen brother. thank you!

  • What makes me sad to hear this under the name Allman Brothers Band is that we must keep in mind that Derek and Warren are replacement players. First for Duane and now for Duane and Dickey. I was born in 1947 and saw the original band several times and after the magic of that and having the sadness seeing the fine players including Derek and Warren in Duane's spot with Dickey but still good, with no Duane or Dickey I just can't enjoy the ABB anymore. Brings me down. Too many replacement players

  • That's life my friend. Yes, it is sad to see some of the originals out of the band, but they still play some amazing music.

  • you must not be listening to the music, and come its not like there isnt enough tribute these days this whole song was pictures of duane on the screen i was there

  • got tix for the october show in charlotte lookin for some good people?

  • I was at the first show! Warren didn't make it and Jimmy Herring from Widespread Panic (who kicked ass) filled in for him. Jimmy did an amazing job. They had some long long long jams. haha

  • Was there too, Jimmy kicked ass played every song both sets, he is the fucking man!! Panic is sooooo good!!!!

  • What'd you think of that 31 minute "Mt. Jam"? Damn that was so amazing. And Panic was amazing. they went from one song straight into the other so smoothly, just like butter.

  • Love 3:23-3:43 - thankful for entire jam - it's all good!!

  • AWESOME FOOTAGE DUDE! thanks

  • u can get the suny at stonybrook live album on the abb website... blue sky is absolute heaven on earth on that recording and the whole setlist is great.. it was a month before we lost Brother Duane

  • Stonybrook 9-19-71 - A legendary performance from Brother D - I agree....this version is definitely channeling Skydog's Soul!!! Love it - thanks for posting

  • Believe it or not, Duane did add Trane & Miles flourishes to his songs, I think he played more like a horn than Derek does.(there's more space in his phrasings) Derek is a fantastic student and he is almost where Duane was when he left this earth. Derek sometimes plays a few too many notes, less is better. It's harder knowing where not to put a note...

  • Wow, what a beautiful treatment of this number. They both done Dickey proud, thank ya' boys, God bless...

  • im gonna give you the benefit of the doubt and assume desperately that you mean duane... cuz dickey betts most certaaaainnnly did not write this song. this was skydog all the way.

  • I'm quite aware that Duane wrote,"Little Martha." I was of speaking of,"Blue Sky," of course. It's almost as if they played the two songs for "passed" and "past" members of the band.

  • ya ya i saw that after i wrote that i didnt realize it ws little martha into blue sky...thought it was just little martha... caught em last night at mountain jam... so dope. cheers!

  • How about Duane :P? This is Duane's song u know ;)

  • The first lead in Blue Sky was Duane's and is extremely well regarded. I think that is how they fit it into Duane tribute and paired it with Little Martha, butI also like to think they were paying tribute to Dickey and the original pairing of Duane and Dickey.

  • Oh REALLY. Well it beats traffic ;-D (HS)

  • Comment removed

  • great video! nothing compared to Duane or Dickey.. I dont know why alot of you are comparing them to this.

  • why are you comparing derek to dwayne? this song is 100% betts

  • I love Dickey, but it wasn't all Dickey, the first lead in Blue Sky was played by Duane. Still, I feel like somehow this was a tribute to Dickey and it brought tears to my eyes.
