I did some work on a dodge ram and discovered it was leaking from the timing cover gasket too. I don't think that's a good design having the the water pump bolt to the timing cover and coolant pass through it but that's just my opinion.
nice vid, just took my 96 dakota v6 to my mechanic today, leaking coolant...he said its the timing chain cover, wtf.lol cant complain tho, been good to me..
i just bought a 1998 dodge dakota sport with the 3.9L i know its been very well maintained but i dont think the timing chain has ever been done it has 200,000 KL on it not miles, should it be changed?
I have a '96 dodge ram 1500, the water pump was leaking, I replaced it, but I'm concerned about the radiator fan or whatever it's called. The fan is mounted on the new water pump but its blades are contacting with the A/C unit. Did I mount it wrong? or should I bend the blades forward a bit?
@9x19 It turns out that the mechanic who pulled the old water pump free of the fanblae assembly ha reattached the fan on backwards. we reversed the blade and everything fit into place perfectly. Thanks for the insight
Wow, this is the same situation I'm in; thought the leak was coming from the water pump but once I got in there, I saw the leak was coming from the timing chain case in almost the exact same spot. Now, I haven't the tools or confidence to get behind the vibration damper. Am I best off just taking it to someone who actually knows what they're doing? How much would be too much to pay a mechanic for this?
So when you are changing the water pump on this truck you need to mess with the timing chain to get the water pump out? Should you change the timing chain ? I have a 2000 Dodge Durango with the same motor as this one in my water pump is leaking should I change the timing chain ?
I'm a young mechanic who is just starting on my 98 Dakota that needs a new water pump is there a specific tool to remove the fan from the motor and pulley or can a basic tool around the shop work?
or do I just pull the pump out with the fan still attached?
To take the fan of you need to secure the pulley that the fan is attached to, then use a wrench on the nut. There is a tool for the job. But you can make your own. Just put a couple of bolts through the holes in the pulley, then place a long pry bar between the bolts.
Don't forget to disconect battery cables. If you dont your truck won't start check gages light will turn on. probelm was solved by disconecting battery cables for a few minutes.
I plan on replacing the waterpump on my 95 3.5L intrepid soon and this vid taught me a few things. I think I'm confident enough in what I know so far to remove the rad and fans, the accesory belts, the crank pulley, the housing cover, and the water pump, However...I'm still not 100% sure I'll be able to resintall the timing cover on my own. My best bet is to find a good manual like you said. Thanks for the vid.

Good vid. I had to change the same gasket on a Ford 3.0 V6 that was leaking at the same spot. The gasket had disintegrated in that spot.

If it's not making any funny noises or the housing leaking. I would not.

@no1afriking Something wrong for sure. Make sure you have the right pump installed. Do not bend the blades.

Most of today's Garages charge 75, or more an hour. Plus parts. I think this a two hour job. Ask you nearest dealer how much and well, shop around.

No.Not unless it is worn, showing signs of excessive play. On a 2000 not likely.
