  • The Interstates In Detroit See Cross Area I-75,696,96,275,375,Windsor Tunnel Cross 2 Canada

  • Eminen ,D12

  • yup, best have good shocks, cool vid/audio

  • @motorcityrobbie Thanks, I will have several Detroit area videos in HD coming next month.

  • My g g g g g grandmother was a POW at Detroit during the Revolutionary War. The British captured their fort in frontier Kentucky and marched them up there, didn't release them until 1783

  • it seem like you was glad to get out , later , and don,t use are music again

  • @eddyb6666 In was glad to get out because it almost rush hour and I did not want to get stuck in traffic, is that OK with you? and by the way, I'll use any music I please and I might be coming back this summer to re-shoot it in HD, hopefully I'll have more time in Detroit to make more than just one video.

  • I wouldn't say that Detroits skyline is "unimpressive". Maybe less-so than other cities of it's size, but I love Detroit and hope it comes back to it's former glory, and I think it will! Love your videos btw.

  • I live around here. Earlier this week I drove the same section of I-75 as you did between 0:17 and 0:50 but there was no construction, M-10 from 1:25 southward and even drove part of I-375 north to I-75 south back home. I hope you come back and reshoot all these in HD. Oh and I am both a Pistons and Red Wings fan! :D

  • @FGsignals I would love to come back and re-shoot this and more in HD!

  • I love revisiting this Video. Next time you're in town be sure to take I-75 North. That's where you'll find the best infrastructure and views of the city.

  • @quatlen I-75 North was closed (Construction) or we would have filmed it.

  • @Freewayjim LOL on the "I-75 South - CLOSED (Nice)" part. They were working on the new Gateway project for a new span on the Ambassador Bridge, and a new entrance for I-96 traffic towards the bridge to Canada. They completed it in the summer of last year, and although the bridge span isn't there, that part of the Fisher Freeway looks a little better. Be good to see a few things that theroseandswords brought up, especially MotorCity Casino along the Lodge Freeway (M-10).

  • cleveland basketball!

  • Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids are much more interesting cities to view..and safer ;P They both have pretty good skylines that are actually growing. Detroit is alright, but it's a rather mediocre city that is slow in it's progress for a turn around. Glad you got to see it though. Next time Drive into Chitown! I promise it's one of the best skyline drives in the country!

  • @XXChicagoGuy I agree with you. Detroit sucks. Ann Arbor is cool I live there, Grand rapids is pretty cool too, go to Grand rapids or Ann Arbor first thing you notice if you are from detroit is Wow clean streets and actual interesting and unique businesses that are not boarded up especially grand rapids they keep their downtown spotless. Ann Arbor has at least 20 major nature areas neither one of those places has that many run down areas, both have better transportation systems. Fuck Detroit.

  • @theindigonation I mean I don't hate it. It is experiencing a bit of a revival and in a decade it may actually be somewhat bustling and not so lame. It still has interesting architecture, food, and culture. But there are far better places to live than the city. Detroit has some of the most affluent and trendy suburbs in the country. Like you said, Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids are examples of sizable cities in Michigan experiencing growth. The Traverse City is also a pretty affluent area up north!

  • @XXChicagoGuy Grand Rapids actually has some nice freeways (both US-131 and I-196 were updated recently, while M-6 was completed in 2004).

  • @cparkes92 I actually kind of hate Grand Rapids freeways, I think they are way too fast and narrow and you constanty hear about people dying on them yearround...however US-131 is a very pretty drive along the skyline for sure.

  • I take these freeways everyday :)

  • people have said michigan needs atleast 1 toll road.... i think it would be i- 96

  • This was a great vid, thanks for making this. :D It's cool to see Detroit through eyes of a non-Detroiter.

Next time you come to Detroit drive down I-94 to see the Rouge River Plant, the Uniroyal tire, the "football" bridge over US 24, and then take a ride down I-696 to see the I-696/M-10/US 24 "Mixing Bowl" interchange. Also, take a drive on M-10 south again at night to see the Motor City Casino all lit up. That kinda trippy to watch.

  • @theroseandswords: Thanks, I'll keep those things in mind if I ever get back up that way.

  • 2 Updates:

    1) I-75 South (Fisher Freeway) was reopened last year after the completion of that new entrance to the Ambassador Bridge.

    2) Our ex-mayor is currently running his little "Friends of Kwame" website to help raise his little legal fees before he goes back to jail

  • think we could ever convince you to do a driving tour of the inner city neighborhoods Jim? XD

  • Sure!! with an armored car and two armed bodyguards :)

  • @Freewayjim the city is not as bad as the news states... just stay in the main well lit streets at night if you're nervous. we ride mopeds (50cc bikes with pedals) from 10-midnight through out the summer and never had any hassles except some bums and people trying to push us over and steel our bikes... tip: wear a kill strap if you ride alone in the city and acknowledge bums respectfully, but dont engage in conversation. thats how one of our members had his bike stolen

  • btw, I stayed in detroit for two years, and on the top of that bridge (I-75) was one of my favorite views of the detroit skyline.

  • I live in New Orleans, and i'd like to do a full video of n.o along I-10

  • detroit skyline is anything but unimpressive. atlanta skyline isnt any better than most large cities in america.

  • Oh please, there is no comparison. Atlanta has a very modern and constantly growing skyline. Aside from the GM Building Detroit's skyline looks like something from the 60's.

    Noooo comparison.

  • @Freewayjim

lets not forget that atlanta has a high rise that very much resembles the gm building. I agree that atlanta's skyline is growing, and detroit is deteriorating, but I just think detroit's skyline is at least a little more than unimpressive.

  • @Freewayjim

I look at u.s cities as a hobby, and I find your videos to be very interesting, Jim. I've been to atlanta several times in the past, and i find it to be a very interesting city like many large cities. my personal favorite video is the tampa video with molly hatchet. that was genius.

  • Thanks.

I look at/study cities like you do and I'd have to say that Pittsburgh is my favorite skyline (NYC is in a league of it's own).

The Westin Peachtree Plaza in ATL that resembles the GM Plaza is a much, much taller building (71 stories, over 1000 feet) I've had dinner at the "Sun Dial" lounge at the top that rotates and spent my first night as a married man there :)

Glad you like that Tampa video.

  • @Freewayjim - Actually that's incorrect, its a tad bit shorter than the GM Plaza in Detroit (Renaissance Center) you can google it, bing it, even skyscraper-page it and you'll find out that the Renaissance Center building is actually taller than the Peachtree Plaza in Atl- as measured from the back-entrance which is the main-entrance for the building. Accurate information is what I'm portraying right now- oh btw, both buildings are under 1,000 feet tall (723 and 750 ft to be exact)

  • Got my numbers crossed somewhere on that one .

  • "Dealing in debt and stealing in the name of the Lord." Right when you show the pics of the GM headquarters--majority-owned by the government!

  • A lucky Synch :)

  • Another awesome video Freewayjim. Any plans on crossing the border and shootin' a video of Toronto freeways? We got some big ones here :)

  • Thanks, no plans to go to Toronto right now.

  • great vid Mr ACTION JACKSON!!!

  • BTW, I thought Detroit was dead and deppressing untill I visited Toledo, it is one of the pimples on what is otherwise the truly great state of Ohio. Seriously, Toledo sucks hairy donkey balls.

  • @TitaniumByFire A pimple?Really?It's not that bad.A mole maybe,not a pimple!

  • Don't forget to wear your helmet when operating a cumputer, you might bump your head against the screen. Or you can wear your harness. BTW, I didn't know special special ed had computer labs.

  • Exactly what was the insult for?I found your comment funny. BTW I dont actually live in Toledo, but maybe I should have made that clear.JACKASS!(now that was a direct insult) My appologies to Freewayjim for filling his post's with meaningless rants.

  • No prob, it happens.

  • Sorry, I misunderstood what you said. My apoligies.

  • @75sliver At least you can squeeze a pimple. Trust me, coming from Canada on our road trips, Detroit is one place where you just want to keep going through!

  • ...but right on mark at least with it's rank in city population. I hate it when people take cheap and easy shots at a city in dire straits by exagerating what Detroit lacks.

  • Detroit ranks what in city population after its heavy population loss, 10th or so ? Detroits cbd ranks about that in how many 20 plus storie or 250 ft. plus tall buildings in the U.S. With 8 at least 500 feet or better, which includes technically 2 over 600 feet, and one at 748 feet. The cbd alone also has around another 50 buildings that are 10 stories or better, giving the cbd alone about 100 give or take highrises and skyscrapers. Not only is that pretty good, especially for a declining city,

  • hey jim .. wat is your overall impression of this city's freeway network ?

  • The network, or grid itself is quite good, very expansive, it's just old with a few minor upgrades here & there from what I could tell.

  • that was great , i live here , you should come back now , the gateway project is done , go up into mexican town on the southwest side , great place

  • lol shoulda known your gay ass was from Toledo. You think these roads were bad then, try driving here in the winter.

  • Freeway Jim, that stretch of I-75 is open now. Oh well, it was a great video anyway. I have no plans in the near future to visit Detroit.

  • when did you film this one jim? it looks old. it seems like detroit's fate is going to be like buffalo and baltimore.

  • This was filmed in June 2008. Baltimore? The Inner Harbor project from the early 80's saved it, I think Baltimore is a great city.

  • I love it, the text band said" we better get out of town while we can", good observation, I was born and raised in Detroit and have lived in the Northern suburbs all my adult life, the only time I go into Detroit is an ocasional Tigers game, then it's get off the xway at the nearest exit , hit the parking structure and into the stadium. Aint no hangin out in Detoit. Sadly, except for downtown proper and around Comerica Park / Ford Field it's a shit hole. . .

  • Well, I like your interpretation :) But honestly it was close to 4PM on a weekday and I wanted to get out before rush hour hit, we ended up in Cincinnati that evening.

  • I really didn't think you made the city out to be a bad place. I think we all can see the terrible roads, the empty streets (compared to most cites). There is really nothing good about the place. The mayor was a crook... I really enjoy watching your videos. I feel like im well traveled...

  • Thanks, I have not spent enough time in Detroit to know what it's really like, I'm just going on the premise that the roads seem antiquated, especially compared to other cities who have made major upgrades over the years. That being said it's still interesting to see the older construction.

  • Detroit's alright. You kind of make it out as a bad city though, kind of unfair. I grew up in Detroit suburbs and I thought Detroit was fine. It's just like any other rust-belt city: rough around the edges, but it has amazing history, and gems. There's a lot of cool redevelopment going on as well. And I guarantee you that the most interesting thing about downtown Detroit is NOT the freeways....

  • DETROIT SUCKS!!!!! red wings fans are all bandwagoners!!!! oh and both the celtics and lakers fans are too.

  • No bandwagon fan here, Celtics fan since 1974.

Most Lakers fans I know could not even find L.A. on a blank map if they had to.

  • Hey Tiger Stadium at 4:50

  • i love my fair city of detroit. during rush hours i barely use the freeways. why would u use them to get anywhere when Grand rive takes u to lansing, gratiot takes u to port huron and canada, woodward takes u to pontiac, and michigan avanue takes you to chicago!

  • Not bad, only one thing! When you said Detroit Basketball, PISTONS SUCK, CHICAGO BULLS KICK ASS!!!!

  • It's true that Detroit's freeways are sorely in need of an update, but most of downtown's system was built in the 50s before the Interstate act was even signed! The rest of it (I-96) was built in the 70s. The Lodge (M-10) was completely (well, 16 miles of it) rebuilt a couple years ago, I-75 is opened again, I-94 between Michigan and Telegraph (10 miles) was re-done about 5 years ago, and I-96 between Telegraph and downtown (12 miles) is as smooth as a baby's behind!

  • i love detroit. i love the roads there too when im driving theres very much 2 see :) Lol

  • Looks like a mess of concrete. At least around downtown.

  • At the 0:40 mark, you posted, "You will see the unimpressive Detroit Skyline..." I live near Buffalo, NY, and that skyline can also fall under the "unimpressive" category.

By any chance, would you happen to have video of travels you made on the Western NY highway systems(I-90, 190, 290, 390, 490, 590, and even 990)? I'd be glad to see any commentary you might have.

    Thanks.

  • I have not filmed Western NY yet, sorry.

  • Would have been easier to do this video now. I-75 is now fully open and free of all those annoying moon craters LOL. You should d a video drive through from Cambridge Ohio to Washington PA on I-70. It would be sort of a nostalgia trip for me. I used to live along I-70 through that part of Ohio before moving here to Detroit in Melvindale off of I-94.

  • When it open? I thought it wasn't supposed to open til December '09

  • It opened on the 3rd of July. The weather was good enough that they got done faster.

  • dick move by that hummer at 3:10. i'd be highly pissed.

  • how is that a dick move? He moved over so the speeding fucking neon could get off his ass.. then RIGHT back into the fastlane after he zoomed by. LoL yud be pissed for nothing, camera man was far enough back to stop anyways even if the hummer was to NOT of signaled and just slammed his brakes which he didnt

  • How long were you in Detroit?

  • About an hour.

We were in Toledo and my son had never seen Detroit so figured we could get in and out before rush hour got bad, mission accomplished!

  • I know you guys were in a rush, but you really missed out by not going into the northern suburbs and onto I-696 (Reuther Fwry). It is one of the fastest, biggest freeways in the nation. The portion between The Lodge Freeway & I-75 is awesome!

  • Thanks for the tip, I'll keep that in mind if I'm ever up that way again.

  • I agree with LeighRay, of coarse the roads in Detroit are crap, the city is bankrupt! BUT, when you head out into the suburbs, you'll find some pretty impressive roads like, I-696, I-275, and I 96. They are well built, fast, and have some amazing tunnels and bridges. Try it out, you will be amazed!

  • A great Detroit shot is ( especially at night ), when taking I94 and getting on to I75. The city just pops out of seemingly nowhere. I94 has a cool brigde at Telegraph (?) and a HUGE tire. Good stuff.

  • @viacomfan....yeh that "cool" bridge your talking about is a piece of shit, these assholes spent 13 mil. on that thing, and its all of 200 feet long. I see it everyday and i wouldnt even call it a bridge, its more of a "overpass"

  • Very true!

  • Not true at all. From anywhere west and need to get to Toronto or up to Montreal, you go through Detroit. If you shipping/sailing between the Atlantic onto Chicago, you go through Detroit.

  • What is the Michigan U driving style?

  • @jshove17 It's a Michigan invention on making a left hand turn, used with divided highways in Michigan and other places. Basically instead of making a left turn, you turn right, go a short distance, then make a left U-turn and go in the direction you want to go. In Michigan, we call this a "Michigan Left". It was created to reduce accidents.

  • Michigan is one of those states where the Michigan U can throw off new drivers not familiar with the traffic pattern. Though I do like the Michigan U style of driving, but that is just my opinion. Love these fwy. vids. I traveled across the U.S. heavily between 1998-2006 and must covered a majority of what you have posted online either working as a trucker or a telecom professional. If you want a crazier adventure, try shooting Puerto Rican driving.

  • loser

  • I've often travelled to the New York area, and I'll tell you this... New Jersey has a messed-up road system also. Left and U turns have to use cloverleaf ramps, and you have to be very careful what lane you're in if you want to, for example, leave the Newark Airport and head for Route 22 or 24 for Union or other nearby locales. Otherwise, you're having to travel a bit more to make it back to your intended exit.

  • Hey Jim. You were in Detroit and didn't drive on the nation's first ever urban depressed freeway, The Davison. Great video though!

  • Thanks, I had limited time to be there and got what I could, maybe next time.

  • Nice video I was born and raised Detroit. It brought back memories of home.

  • Detroit Red Wings!! Yeah, and I live in Pittsburgh, PA. GO RED WINGS. (Im also a Penguins fan to. Kinda sucks when you got two teams u like and unsure which one u want to win Like the Stanley Cup of 2008 i believe

  • You should have toured 275 and 696 thats where all the richs are, i saw a 3 bmw 7 series, 2 5 series, 2 e -class, and a S- class and the building are nicer

  • Just because you see BMW's there, doesn't mean their rich you idiot. Anyone can buy a BMW, but of course, people will put it on credit and they're in bigger debt.

  • Nice cars + nice Buildings = a nice clean rich look and if you live in Detroit you maybe know of the abondonded building problem, so around 275 and 696 there are some nice looking cars and buildings and its the american way to go into debt to get nice stuff and if you look i specifically said what kind of BMW and MERCEDES-BENZ and most people couldn't afford those cars even with good credit and a good paying job which means you have to have a good job = rich

    ur so fucking stupid

  • I-64 in st louis is closed and a small portion of I-40 is closed in knoxville.

  • Does Detroit even have a rush hour anymore???? :(

  • also in detroit all the express ways are used very commonly because alot of ppl transfer from detroit all the way out like 1 hr to the stix every day to work and back...

  • ive lived in detroit scince i was born u r in the wrong part of the city to c the skyline you need to go over by the detroit river at the very end of like were i75 turns into i375 and goes under the tunnel into canida also detroit is very slum like and it has nothing to do with the riots in the mid 1990s...detroit was beautiful in the 1960s and the 1970s but not we r in a state of depression and the economy has never been worse warren is were i moved to and alot of the south is slum there

  • Comment removed

  • am i missing something here, or are all of the freeways in detroit named after american car companies?! ford freeway, chrysler freeway, WTF!

  • Comment removed

  • For a city as large as Detroit, you'd think they would have a more impressive skyline. What can I say... Michigan is more or less boring other than the U.P. and Great Lakes anyway.

  • Dude same here.

    I love boston celtics.

    LETS GO CELTICS!!!!!

  • I think you underestimate our skyline. It has some of the best examples of Art Deco architecture in the world. Just because we don't have the tallest buildings in the USA, doesn't mean our skyline isn't "impressive". There are only two seasons in Detroit: orange barrel and winter. I think the freeway system ruined us more than anything. It tore up established neighborhoods and there are too many. 75, 94, the Jeffries/96, the Lodge (M-10), and the Davison (M-8, isn't that a little excessive?

  • Congratulations! You drove through Detroit and made it out alive lol!

  • You cant get shot on the freeway. But you can get shot on the surface streets. I almost got shot driving down the street when some guy started shooting at this other guy.

  • I know, I was just being sarcastic because of Detroit's bad ass rep. Interesting story btw.

  • yeah right. i drove 80 in a 55 on I-94 east going to bell isle

  • 94 2 bell isle werer u coming from cuz i take jefferson....i take all surface streets there i take like 6 miles to jefferson i used to love belle isle the yacght club and everything now its like a dead body depot..

  • U can see just how bad we have it up here in the north right now. Look at the cars... just the type of cars u regularly see in ur videos. Gosh, Ohio and Michigan... we are strugglin

  • Great tour of Mo-town's freeways. Its sad that Detroit has lost its luster. Greedy Politicians, corruption, and globalization killed a magnificent city. Maybe someday Detroit will come back.

  • Detroit.... orange barrels everywhere all the time! The safest place to be in Detroit is usually on a freeway headed out of town - and yes they are all older than dirt, except for I-696 which really is a bad ass freeway. I'm just kidding, I do like visiting once in a while. I grew up there.

  • pretty cool that you got detroit. i just moved back to atlanta after having lived there for 3 years, trying to do it on my own w/o much of an education behind me... one of the few places i could live in this country in a highrise designed by a world famous architect (mies van der rohe) right in downtown, for 450/mo.

i already miss detroit, though i won't miss the 6 months of winter, and excessive numbers of overcast days. wonderful place though, and wonderful people. (except for the racism!)

  • man if you haven't already, you should try going down the lodge/m10 from southfield to downtown. that's gotta be one of the coolest freeways i've ever, it's below grade and you're sorta tunneled in with big imposing walls on each side

  • Detroit got screwed by NAFTA and WTO agreements. No doubt. Detroit was a great city. Still is. It's just not as populated as it once was. It is not the size Baltimore was in 1950 and we lost 300,000 or so people since.

  • @SWBBC - Again stating accurate information, Detroit is a larger city (both population and size-wise) than Baltimore, even though they have lost MORE THAN half of its population height of 2,000,000 in 1953, its 890,000 today.

  • I can't beleive how huge detroit is to be such an empty city. There is so much infrastructure that just goes to waste because America doesn't give a shit about that city.

  • How is that America's fault? I think Detroit doesn't care about Detroit or it would not be that bad.

  • Well we as a country we made it legal for nearly half of detroits jobs to leave the country. Detroits citizens were begging for help during the crack cocaine epidemic of the 80's and we as a country just let the drug operation control the whole city even though the Feds knew Detroit police were profiting from the drug money. And on top of that we as a country continue 2 allow their schools to have a 23% graduation rate without holding anyone accountable. I know u felt the emptiness while in city

  • I've been downtown twice (2005 & 2008) and I'd have to agree with your last sentence.

  • There's only so much you can do in a huge city with a depleted tax base. Detroit cannot incorporate taxes from its surrounding suburbs due to laws passed in congress in the 1950's. Columbus Ohio for example is a thriving city because of its unlimited tax base, even the poorest communities have good schools so there are not many families that are stuck in poverty like detroit.

  • Don't you ever say that to the average Detroiter! It's not America's fault , but America doesn't give Detroit the respect it deserves. We love our city...but what are we to do? We are losing our jobs, no one wants to invest in the city. We are trying...but there is only so much we can do.

  • o yea man the PA turnpike is consistantly rated as the worst freeway to travel on by truckers

  • i love this song lol.its from the movie shaft groovy lol!

  • hey jim, u should tour Long Island and NYC.. some of the roads are pretty nice, and the parkways are very unique. Robert Moses engineered them, if u know who that is.

would u be coming around NY anytime soon?

  • Hi, I know all about Robert Moses & NYC, I probably won't film it though, too much paranoia and there are camera restrictions on several bridges.

  • MDOT sucks and Detriot is ugly sweet vid tho

  • yeah, i would have to say that detroit's freeway system needs a update, but harrisburg, pa is in worse shape, there outta date, & there even narrower than that, 83 between york & harrisburg is narrow as hell, same can be said for i-283 & pa 581(from 11 to 83), & most of the lengths of the PA Turnpike main line & PA Turnpike NE Ext. are rough as hell.

  • :( how disapointing. not the vid, the city. i thought Detroit was along the line of Chicago. i still enjoyed the vid.

  • Great video! Long time detroiter here!If you come back you should do a video of the "mixing bowl" in southfield.

  • I agree with you, NitekMuscle.

  • Detroit. Now theres a sad story.

  • What does the ethnic makeup of the population have to do with the quality of city's freeways? Atlanta, Montgomery and Mobile are predominantly Black and have excellent quality road networks.

  • LOL, The freeways in those towns lack. Atlantan has a random layout, while Montgomery and Mobile lack in an expressway system. Montgomery has potholes out the ying yang, and you can't get around Mobile without being in a traffic jam. Detroit actually has one of the largest, AND best laid out freeway systems.

  • Comment removed

  • LOL, "Like putting lip stick on a pig"

  • Another nice one, Jim! Keep up the good work.

  • It is true: freeways in Detroit do suck! You should come down to Columbus; we have such nice, new freeways (relatively speaking!). I-670, I-70 between Downtown and Hamilton Road, I-270 between Sawmill Road and I-670, and OH 315 between Lane Avenue and I-670. Come check us out! :)

  • @colsohutube21 - I will admit this, Columbus, OH has a very nice freeway-system; Detroit's is effective and expansive but I think it could be better INCLUDING the quality of it....

  • @varner313

After this winter, and like most others, they once again suck and I am sure Detroit's freeways are better. But you're right; Detroit has a rather large freeway system and it is rather nice.

  • You made this interesting...perhaps one of the most interesting videos you ever made! The music, sights, still shots and clever comments worked together very well.

  • Nice, I love "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone." I went to Detroit two years ago. Did you get a chance to go over to Windsor, Ontario?

  • No we didn't, the potential delays coming back to the US would have messed up the timing of the rest of our trip.

  • Yeah, when I was in Detroit, I went Windor with my family. Coming back, the entrance to the US was closed for probably ten-to-fifteen minutes, leading to the delays you spoke of.
