Lee Hazlewood said that he intentionally wrote the lyrics to be as nonsensical as possible. In a nightclub he saw kids with eyedroppers putting something on sugar cubes. He asked them what it was and they told him "LSD" One of the kids told him it was "kinda like Sugartown" Hence his inspiration for this song. Nancy and Lee had to keep this bit of information from the Record Company!

I hadn't heard this song in about 40 years, and it rushed a fond memory back into my head right away: my grade school used to put on "skate nights" at the local roller rink, and they played this song during the all-skates.  I can hear the rumble of skates, see the red and blue lights, smell popcorn and hot dogs...what a nice memory. Thanks for posting!
