This is exactly how I manage my wardrobe: there's a wonderful thrift store near my house, and I get nearly all of my clothing from there! They always have strange and unique stuff, and better yet, the shop owners love Halloween, and leave some of their decorations up year-round. The best, best part is that all of the profits go to animal shelters! Thanks to them, I dress in my favorite style on almost no budget at all.
Pretty much what I would advise myself - particularly regarding top hats; and bowlers, trilbies, capotains et c.; I cannot emphasise how important quality of material is when it comes to hats. I think people are often so taken by the shape of one, that they forget what material it is made of - and ruin an outfit. The same goes for a mask. I feel very sad when I see a cheap, polyester mask that doesn't even have the decency to look interesting.
@ChemStudios I think cravats are another one - it's often assumed that you have to buy an expensive one from an expensive bridal shop, as I first thought as I started really dressing myself. A simple strip of the right fabric, such silk or even satin, and a brooch, or better yet a cravat pin, works wonders. It can be tied in any shape that takes one's fancy, and looks far more authentic - whilst costing a minute fraction of any kind of pre-tied cravat.
I had my friend(a professional clothing maker) make my waist cincher for me. She will also be making me over-bust corset as soon as she sells my old one(store bought, never fit right, but in great condition so it should sell quickly). Having a hand-made corset is a must, as they look 100 times better than non-customized store-bought corsets. And hand-mades are more likely to have straight steel boning, rather than the more flexible spiral steel or poly-boning(good corsets should not be flexible)
If you are investing in a corset, I would suggest getting a steel boned corset. The benefits are they last much longer, retain their shape and give you a better shape. The plastic boned corsets cost less money but they get weird after a cpuple of uses. They start to loose their shape. The plastic rods start to bend at weird angles. Another usefull tip: If you are top heavy (big breasts) I would suggest getting a corset that only comes up to the bottom of your breasts.
I vouche for dandizettes getting a good corset. I spent $400 on ONE, and honestly, this ONE corset, that was professionally tailor made FOR ME, fitted in person, made by a woman on a sewing machine that's well over 50 years old... It is my favorite item in my wardrobe. It is black coutil, sturdy, goes with almost everything... I wouldn't trade it for the warmest jacket in the world on the coldest day of the year. A tailor made corset is a MUST HAVE.
I'm not transgendered or questioning or gay or anything in between, I'm a hetero girl. In fact I'm not "goth" or into the darker side of life at all. I guess I'm pretty much the exact opposite of you, style wise - that being said, however, I'm completely interested in all of your videos. You have such a magnetic personality and your videos are just so addictive to me. Keep them coming!! :)
@Blackmassacre6 depending on the shape of your figure, there are always certain cuts for tops and dresses etc that are very flattering for certain shapes. Ex. Black, when worn correctly, can look very slimming. Things that are tight on the waste and flowy on the bottom can create a lovely hourglass shape. If you look into victorian fashion, you'll notice that a lot of dresses have many layers of gorgeous fabric around the leg area, yet are very fitted around the waist(:
If you don't have the money right now go onto ThreadBanger on YouTube and they have several different patterns for top hats and such. If you take the time to do it right. They don't look that bad.
@BlackMassacre6 You can get ones that look like a real corset in the front but have a zipper in the back. They're slightly more comfortable but only work if you plan to wear something over them.
Hehehe I know what you mean about thrift stores. So many people say to me - "Oh I love that! Where did you get it? How much?" ... and when I say I got it from a thrift store for 5 bucks they're always surprised.
I have a mini-top hat, and 2 corsets. one is falling apart, but i dont' wear it outside of clothes. one was handmade by my boyfriend, fitted to me, and fits like a glove. my mini top hat is just a Halloween headband thing thats been modded to look more sophisticated. . .i love my few pieces of dandy clothing. :)
I personally don't have an issue with stretchy velvet fabric, it is more comfortable for blouses than real velvet, I think it looks best in black and in Victorian style tops. All of the real velvet I own are vintage opera capes, blazers, shrugs, and corsets, and none of those things need any stretch. But trust me, I never look cheap, and I don't need therapy for liking a certain fabric. Haha. :p And the only time it looks really cheap is when it's in color, but that's my opinion.
I knew exactly what you meant by Dandy when I saw the thumbnail of this video:) I like to live certain parts of my life (well, most unless I need to get down and dirty I can) with good etiquette and poise. Most people see me as "stuck up" or "self centered" for that, the ones who don't know me. But there's nothing wrong with being polite and well mannered. Its sad it's so foreign in today's culture. I believe fully in women's right but I also believe a women should have good etiquette and class.
@GunnShepard goodwill also lies about what they do with their funding. im not donating shit to salvation army, but i will gladly trade trivial amounts of money for things they sell.
@GunnShepard If you live in Los Angeles California, you can check out Out of the Closet thrift stores. They are on the higher price end of the thrift stores. They are really nice and you can find alot of things. Also they are owned by AHF (Aids Healthcare Foundation) .99 cents of every dollar goes to meds and affordable healthcare for people living with HIV and AIDS.
omg you look adorable! I tried going to those store and i cant ever find anything!! I keep seeing people find these amazing boots or clothes i have never found anything good :/
$80 O_o errrrrm Aflecks has top hat for £20 if you ever need any even with postage it'll be cheaper everything in Aflecks is cheap and they have lots of different styles for every kind of goth, emo, dandy, scene kid, punk, rocker, vintage shoppers, cosplayers, and people who are creative and like making things. Sorry Hipster your not allowed (thats written on the door as you go in) lol :D
"And still be able to pull it off well, because that's what I do" - I love Joji, but that statement definitely came across as a bit pretentious. Good video none the less.
@goodmorningchap I think you should perhaps see that I have a sense of humour, not an ego. I am the least pretentious person you will ever meet, i can assure you that.
The downside of buying shoes from secondhand shops though, is that you often can't find a pair of nice shoes, if any at all in your size, if you have small feet. I am a 37 in European and have no idea what size I am in the US, and the other day I bought a pair of vintage Doc Martens - they are a 39 and I have to wear three layers of really thick socks to fit in them, but it's the closest I've ever gotten to buying shoes in my size at a secondhand shop :D
You mentioned Salvation Army...I'm guessing you don't know this, but the Salvation Army sometimes uses their money that they receive from donations to support Anti-Gay Rights etc. I used to donate to their bell ringers until I found this out.
@sqoowid I wish they could donate money to people that needed it more, like poor kids, or animal support. Really.. andi-gay rights? some people are so stupid =o=
@TakitoAmiko Yep, basically they do all they can to make sure gay people don't get the same things as I guess "non-gay people do". This guy actually wrote an article about how him and his partner went to the salvation army for help and they denied his request because they refused to cater to people who practiced such a thing as being gay.
Thanks for the video I have some of these things but what I really need a top hat or a bowler hat but my head is fairly big and most hat's don't fit me. Do you have any advice on where I can possibly get a hat that is custom fit?

I agree, its similar to lolita. Cheap fabric looks fake and is often frowned upon. I bought cotton sheets and made my own outfit from the salvation army for less then 10$. I made myself a dress that goes for at least 100$ online custom sized.
Is there a diffrence from dandy's and victorians?
