I have an E46 330i and the only performance item I have is the Signature Motoring performance CAI for about $160. The performance kit adds around 13.5HP on the dyno, sounds freaking great, and installs in under 30 minutes. Highly recommended.
-13.5 HP increase
-Lifetime filter
-SOUND AWESOME
-30 min. install time
Aside from the power gain, the SOUND is amazing at higher RPM but sounds normal in regular driving. I’m thinking about added high-flow exhaust next.
My daily driver is E46 328i and E30 325 weekends. 328i is more responsive with Signature Motoring performance (CAI) intake kit. Installed it myself in under half hour. HP increase on the E46 is about 13.5HP for a cost of $170 or around $17 per HP gain. Best 1st performance mod to do. Other application data:
I’m happy with my 328i, but the only performance mods are sport suspection and the Signature Motoring performance intake for about $150. Signature Motoring kit adds around 11HP on the dyno, great sound, and the best performance upgrade for the money. See my channel videos!
-Adds 9-11 HP
-Never replace filter again (uses K&N filter)
-GREAT SOUND
-Installs in maybe 30-45 min. K&N filter lasts a lifetime.
i'm not saying it is faster. I'm not even comparing both cars. but you can't say a car is slower than another one just because it takes 0.2 secs longer to reach 60 than the other one. maybe it has a higher max. speed, or it is faster from 60- 100, or it is faster on curves or whatever. Just don't come here write things based on only one data you found at a site or magazine.
that m3 wasn't stock, or the 355 wasn't pinned because I traded my 02 E46 for a 95 F355 and the F355 is noticeably faster from 60mph on with similar 0-60 sprints for both cars.
I think the 355 was caught off guard. Prob started in the wrong gear by the looks of it. You're right. I test drove an F355 and it was definitely faster than my 996 Carrera 2. Had to rev the engine alot more to get power though. Different powerband for sure.
Uh... 996 slower than E46? Says who? First off, E46 M3 1/4 mile performance is 13.2 sec, exactly the same as a stock 996 Mk I. Secondly, what do u know about my car? It's not a stock Carrera 2. Thirdly, top speed on an E46 M3 is Governed at 155. Carrera 2 is NOT governed and will do roughly 177 mph. So on a highway pull, u might keep up till 155 but after that ur done son. ;-)
I should have said 0-60 faster. I know 1/4 is the same, yes i dont know anything about your car, how would I? Im talking stock, and top speed comparison is just a waste of time. Not insulting anybody or anybodys car's here. Just stating the facts. According to C&D 2002 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 0-60 is 5.0 and 2002 M3 is 4.7. Not much of a difference.
Ok that's cool. But ya, my original point was from my experience I've driven E46 M3's before and they have similar performance to my 996 Carrera 2(obviously). But the F355 feels MUCH faster than both cars. Maybe the number's 0 to 60 don't show but the 1/4 mile time does (12.8 to the 1/4 on an F355). Just drive one and you'll see what I mean.
@mikegsr94 Don't be a tool man. I own an M3 and love it, but the E46s are far from stunning. Drive what you love and keep it at that. Besides, unless you're driving an 850i, you're just playing at driving a supercar. I'd trade in my M3 for a 348/355 any day of the week. No one turns their head for a beamer. Not to mention an E36 would tear you a new one anyway lol.

A M3 to beat a 355 has gotta have some mod done to it for that extra power

Every vid of m3 vs 355 is different even when stating they're stock. 355 is quicker if driven properly
