Although I've heard and listened to this song before I couldn't stop shivering. The forcefulness of the lyrics completely addresses the most destructive nature of prejudice. This song is about the lynching of African Americans from 1882 to 1968. The person is hung from a tree. They were also set on fire or burned. About 3,500 African Americans were lynched during that time period. They could be lynched for no reason whatsoever on the word from almost any white man and sometimes 10 or more African Americans were hung on the same tree. I know all of this because some of my great grandparents' friends, neighbors, and loved ones were lynched.

@xProudxIrishxGirlx I would advise you to check out some of Sydney Portier's early movies. He did one where he was a union steward and he went South to work. At first he swore off getting involved in the union but he saw that the workers down South were exploited. He also saw much more severe racism down South. Its a great movie for that time period. I think Portier did more than one race issue movie.

@kshay578 My girlfriend has friends who are a bi-racial couple. He is black. She is Jewish. One of those "fake Jews" that were mentioned earlier. They have a son who is about 18 months old, a little boy who is mixed race. Now that boy doesn't know yet about racism. He knows me as a big boy like his dad. He loves my girlfriend. He is too little to understand racism but in his innocence he teaches a lesson to all of us.
this woman is such an inspiration. although im white, and this sing is about racisim towards blacks, it just shows how anyone has the right to stand up for what they believe in. this woman has showed me how to live life in a strong positive way and not let anyone put me down :)
Billie was first introduced tot he song at Cafe Society in the mid to latter 1930s. She didn't immediately take to the song. It must have taken such courage to sing it then. They are such powerful lyrics.

This song is about the lynching of African Americans from 1882 to 1968. The person is hung from a tree. They were also set on fire or burned. About 3,500 African Americans were lynched during that time period. They could be lynched for no reason whatsoever on the word from almost any white man and sometimes 10 or more African Americans were hung on the same tree. I know all of this because some of my great grandparents' friends, neighbors, and loved ones were lynched.

Billie died at a relatively young age, still in the prime of her life. Drug addiction and alcohol abuse did not help her health. But that should not cast a shadow on the greatness of this woman. And when she sang this song she was indeed showing the greatness of who she was. It was daring for her to sing this song and some radio stations refused to play it. It is about Freedom of Expression. I'm doing a module on it now at uni & I hope to do my dissertation on it. just got a First on the first essay towards my final degree grade. her passion and her pain in this song is what i saw in the words i read from books.. and in other music like this. beautiful, brave, heart wrenching. you can't explain to people the pain you felt but you can give them an idea of it through music

@xProudxIrishxGirlx I would advise you to check out some of Sydney Portier's early movies. He did one where he was a union steward and he went South to work. At first he swore off getting involved in the union but he saw that the workers down South were exploited. He also saw much more severe racism down South. Its a great movie for that time period. I think Portier did more than one race issue movie.

@TDS4UT There have actually been several lynchings in the past 10 to 15 years alone. It is still done in the south especially. Nobody talks about because they either don't care or they want to cover it up so people will believe that there isn't still racism.

@TDS4UT First of all I wasnt trying to challenge you. Every race has someone who doesnt like them because of their race. I wasnt trying to deny that. All I was trying to do was bring awareness to the fact that it does still happen it just happens in the dark. Im only 20 and I know of 5 different times when someone was lynched in my lifetime. One of them was a friend of mine and he was only 15. He wasnt a criminal or anything. That was only 7 years ago. So now you know how young people can relate

They have a son who is about 18 months old, a little boy who is mixed race. Now that boy doesn't know yet about racism. He knows me as a big boy like his dad. He loves my girlfriend.
