He needs to seperate the pieces before heating. Putting them in rumpled speeds up the process because the heat can get in between more easily. Some good types of fabric are monk's cloth, denim, rough canvas. Make sure they are 100% cotton. This is from personal experience. Also, if the gas jet gets near enough to flame or coals, it will ignite and give you a nice little jet of flame.
