According to the non-biased Ottoman census by 1913 the population of the area was made up by 330,000 Bulgarians, 315,000 Turks, 236,000 Greeks, 62,000 Jews making up the majority of Salonika. Greeks made up the majority in the areas of Kavala and Ber, as well as in the cities of Serres, Drama and Kastoria - nowhere else!

Unfortunately, at that time about 3/4 of the Bulgarian cultural and political elite were made up from descendants of refugees from Macedonia. The Greed of the Bulgarian elite was the key to the forced and even initially reluctanct annexation, not liberation of Aegean Macedonia 2 Greece.

Tatarchev: "It occurred to us that a subsequent unification would be possible - the way Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia did". What was the language IMRO used? Where was the headquarters of IMRO? @APMUMBP I am not sure which independent macedonian state do you refer to and when did they fight for it. In the constitution of VMORO it wass specifieid that Macedonia and Thrace should achieve autonomous status but not independece as this will be the path to incorporation to Bulgaria. (Just on the basis of the Eastern Rumelia experience) The only period of history when Bulgaria was killing 'Macedonian' people could be related to the prosecution of Ivan Mihaylov's VMRO from 1934 onwards.
