Much of the success of the Battersea County School productions, of which The Pirates of Penzance is one, comes from the brilliant Mr Paul Mathias. Mr Mathias was actually head of humanities but was a brilliant musician, virtuosing in violin and piano and was a clasically trained singer.
The Pirates of Penzance was performed at Alleyne's Grammar School, Stevenage just before I left in 1951. it was a brilliant performance, thanks to George Partridge. An amazing music teacher and an ex. pupil of the same school.
i love this song! i was lucky enough to tour on this show several times. This is my fav song next to pirate king and when the foeman. I miss all these guys and girls!
@LadyEvelynL It's the only explanation. I must say incorporating a gag which included such repetition was a risk, but I thought it was funny. It's meant to be part of the fun.
This is awesome! i grew up on this musical and this version has GOT to be my favourite!!!!!! i have no idea how they keep going!!!! i love the finale also! i also never get sick on it! its often on repeat! i walked in to a pole while i was singing this song i was getting soo into it! love how he tells everyone to shut up because they haven't finished yet! thanks for putting on here!
I am what one would considder a G&S purist, however I am willing to face the fact that the young people of today are not really into classical opera. This version of Pirates (as well as Essgee's Pinafore and Mikado) are admirable in that they are introducing today's youth to the world of Gilbert and Sullivan. And if you give this version a chance, it really is fun to watch (that could just be because I love Jon English as well.)
We're going to do this play for my performing arts class. Originally, this scene we weren't going to do a repetition. But now we are. At least twice. If not three times. Thank you <3
(I hate this play, but this is my favorite song and dance sequence)
"Wait a minute! Just a minute please! This is really important. Please listen. This is... We. Haven't. Finished. Yet! Some very. Important. Dialogue. To do."
If you're being for real with us here, then you lucky bastard you!!! I only briefly met him after one of his G&S performances for HMS Pinafore in NZ, & I've always wanted to meet him again, to thank him for being the inspiration to my career in the Circus that he is, & to my favourite colour being purple thanks to those very pants he wears.
This is awesome. All Gilbert and Sullivan shows are awesome. And when you cast Jon English in one of them you know you've got something truly amazing (even if he is the main antagonist of the show).
I have this on DVD and this is still my favourite part, and is my favourite production of ANYTHING ever. :D Jon English FTW! (taking into consideration that he was mid to late 40s when he performed this. What a trooper!)
@Maestrojosh87 Are you wishing death upon Jon English? If so, fuck you! Jon English is a genious and has got to be immortal. The day he dies is the day I die.
@flamingcartman312 I couldnt agree more...especially when I found out my sister could have gone to see it and she refused though granted she was like 5 but still....I would have if I had not been 2-ish
Having seen "The Pirates" many times, including shows by the D'Oyly Carte I was loathed to watch a group of Australians performing this but was astonished. Some of the performances are outstanding. Whilst this isn't musically the best I have heard "With Cat Like Tread" performed it is certainly the most entertaining. The performance, as a whole operatta is first rate
@iskyftwroflcopterSoi That is the whole point of G & S humour. It is known as "comic irony" and is seen throughout their operettas (other examples in this operetta are both the ploicemen and the pirates who are freightened by their own shadows and theMajor-General who would not have a clue what to do in a battle)
Reminds me of when my school did it. This song NEEDS to be as over the top as posible. In our production the pirates pulled out those plastic cheerleeders megaphone things. If it isnt rediculous, it isnt done right.
Absolutely Brilliant performance, thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it, really entertaining Loved this song best of all. The encores were so funny, I keep watching it over again.
I love this production of Pirates of Penzance! I saw it in Melbourne back in 1994 (or thereabouts) and this song was one of my favourites! @girlsbdfa Actually the point of the song is that they're trying to be really quiet, but not only are they completely inept at sneak about, hence the stomping, but they can't help but get caught up in the moment.
From the look of it, he seems to be getting more comfortable with the audience, (which he now has in the palm of his hand,) by being a bit playfully raunchy. It seems that pirates & rock-stars actually would behave in a similar way, so he could give the people a bit of that familiar modern touch of rock without breaking character or appearing anachronistic at all! Theatrical genius!
I'm currently playing the role of Samuel in a production of "Pirates of Penzance" in Israel. I have to say, I'm not that crazy abou this production. I think it's way to goofy in my opinion.
i will be playing the pirate king in my school's version of this (even though im a girl xD) and this is my favorite thing from the parts ive seen so far
