Incredible musicality, mainly Sheehan and Novello. Just bought one of their records. Dave Weckl, or any other jazz drummer would surely do better at drums than mr. Chambers! Fortunately they invite some other drummers, like Kenwood Dennard and Rayford Griffin in some tracks.
This is a response for celiaemarcos... You have very bad opinion... Dennis Chambers are a master of the drumm, Dave Weckl is good too, but have a diferent style you can't compare... Please listen more about the Master Dennis Chambers the Nº 1 Drummer
Man, this whole album rocks. It's more accessible than their later stuff (this is off their debut), but the grooving is super tight. good work gentlemen. really digging this video too.
John Novello, along with Chick Corea and the chief engineer at the Rhodes factory, were the select three who each received a prototype model of the midi Mark V to play, experiment on, and then make recommendations back to the company on improvements. Only about 3,000 Mark Vs were made before the company ceased operations in 1984, and these were the only three midi versions. I don't know what John Novello did with his, but Chick Corea still actively uses his model on tour and in the studio.
If you were a drummer since your teens & you are in your 40's chances are you will have seen Buddy. It is sad that he wasn't such a great person to be around like Louis Bellson. Louis seemed happy & grateful & Buddy was never openly happy. He was cocky & always had to be revered as the greatest. I think Bellson thought Bozzio blew him away. I was there when they did a clinic together. I'm more impressed by Bellson's personality & humility but Buddy ruled as far as stick control & natural genius
I really enjoy great drummers and have met and seen many from Louis Bellson to Buddy Rich, but Dennis has to be one of my favorites. He's got everything and is nearly perfect. Chops, groove, speed, great sounding drums and cymbals. What is more amazing is that he is self taught. No formal training. If this is the show at The Bottom Line in NY then I was there. I've seen Bill Bruford do some way out there counter rhythm stuff but Dennis goes farther out and comes right back into the pocket.
oh fuck..thats so damn particularized good .. and thats the reason that it has more soul, vibe, groove, drive, energy and even a better sound than most "jazz", i think
In an interview, Billy stated that there were many bass players nowadyas who like to solo and can solo their asses off, but that they couldn't groove or play with a band. They learn the frosting, but not the cake.
You'd be surprised...there are many bass players out there who treat bass as a four-string guitar. They have no idea it's a rhythm instrument, how to keep time or work with the drummer, they just riff.

That's funny... because Sheehans sound obscures whatever groove he might have completely. Horrible tone and sound. Sounds like a crappy indie pick bassist goofing around trying to play jazz.
These guys do some of the most awesome instrumentals. Sure, their stuff sounds like it's straight out of a video game, but that's WHY it's so awesome. Along with the incredible amount of skill possessed by all these musicians. Billy Sheehan is a true virtuoso, and Chambers is a master of the drums. Truly amazing!

Whats about his tone - it's very easy to get.
Take simple bass with two neck pickups, pr just switch bridge one off on another type of.
Add some compressing, and here it is!
Even on Yamaha RBX-170 it is could be done.
PS: very good variation of such sound is when distortion is activated) Boss ODB-3 for example (I use)

A mistake many make...I've posted that people should listen to Niacin ALL OVER this place!
May they find truth.
But seriously, I doubt ANY bassist could shred all day and not groove...it's just a natural thing.
That's like a shred guitarist that never plays chords...Oh yeah, oops, Malmsteen does that HAHA, jus kiddin!
