Instead I was a friend of hers but it is not out of amity that I think Fiorenza has been the greatest mezzo (and even dramatic soprano, for that matter...) of her time. The colour of her voice is unattainable, the pitch absolutely perfect, as well as her 'emissione' and acting. Unfortunately her voice got strained too soon, and she insisted in singing like in the old glorious days, even though they had gone. Maybe her late divorce devastated her and she wanted to compensate her distress...
quelle voix et quelle présence !!!!on a jamais fait mieux comme mezzo ,pour moi elle fait partie des grands mythes de l'opéra au meme titre que des Simionato,Barbieri,Cortez.....Brava!!!!!!
Yes, I'm a great (probably the best) friend of Cossotto. At weekends she used to come to my house, and we'd eat muffins and drink pina coladas in the garden, and then I'd give her singing tips for her upcoming performances. Oh how I long for those days... :-p
I'm jealous .. I heard her sing this role live in 1970 and she was amazing . Her big bright ringing voice carried over all the choruses with ease and to the back of the auditorium .Impressive indeed
I never met her either so we have that in common -as well as the enjoyment of her voice .... everyone knows someone so you never know .. I read a post from Callas' daughter last week
Bravisssssiiiiimoooooo!!!!!!!!!! Es estremecedora, su voz tiene la belleza y el terciopelo del color de una mezzo y la potencia de una soprano (tapa a la orquesta sin romper los tímpanos!) Y ni k hablar de la interpretación...Esta es mi ópera preferida!!!!!!
@operaclassicc This rendition by Cossotto is simply amazing. Maybe you already know it but if not I strongly recomend you to hear the rendition by Lina Bruna-Rasa which is intensity is beyond words.
I have been a good friend of hers, but I believe she's the best Santuzza ever regardless of our relationship. Pity that she hasn't stopped on due time, exposing herself to several 'brutte figure' unfit for a singer of her caliber, or any artist, for that matter...
I have seen many singers doing this aria but no one sang it the way Cossotto did. The vocal and body expression is amazingly touching. The best interpretation of Santuzza!

Wow ... her interpretation couldn't be more veristic! It's a little hysterical, but still very exciting.
Her voice fits Santuzza perfectly, though her high notes don't come off as easy as Simionato's or Baltsa's to my ears. The vocal power and those chest notes are amazing!
But I don't like to state she's the best Santuzza, since Simionato, Baltsa and Callas (among others) are also among the greatest Santuzzas ever.
Her high notes came off easier than both Simionato's and Baltsa's (and Callas' for that matter) in 1965 when she recorded it in studio and in the movie from 1968.
You must be right. I noticed the high notes here aren't as easy and beautiful as when she was younger. I have some recordings of hers from the 50's and 60's and her vocal production is unbelievably even from top to bottom. ;-)
She is not overacting. Remember she is in a live performance and has to project the emotion to the back of the theater. If she was doing the part for film only she would be much smaller I am sure.
I hardly recognized Cossoto. Just amazing. Brava!

What a voice! What an actress! She is my most beloved opera-singer!
She brought me in the early 70s to the opera when I saw her in Verona as Dalilah! Unforgetable!

Interesting interpretation. To be able to hear & see different performers in a given aria is wonderful.

Overacting would be a compliment.
Never mind, she is the best Santuzza ever.

Bear in mind, there was a live audience to please as well as a camera. It may have been a large auditorium.
