  • I wouldn't say that he is a bad interviewer......He seems to know where to stop being too nosy.....and besides there is a generation gap between them..anyway nothing beats British humor..I wish the Chinese had some of it...only some!

  • Just love his voice!!

  • On the whole the novels and short stories are still superior because Doyle's writing was superlative (some episodes adapted better than others, though I forget which ones) but Brett really pulled off the Holmes of the books, and these are definitely the most faithful and accurate renditions. Incidentally, does anyone know why David Burke left/was replaced?

  • @TheBlackWhirlwind - From what I've read, David Burke left after 2 seasons because he wanted to spend more time with his recently born son; he actually recommended Edward Hardwick for the part.

  • I met Jeremy the day he did this interview and he was a wonderful guy! So sad that someone so great is not with us any more! Edward Hardwicke too! RIP guys!!!

  • /Dracula/?! Oh my word. How brilliant would that have been to watch. I wish...

Derek Jameson does talk a little too much for my liking (considering he is interviewer, not interviewee), but even if he had not spoken a word during this whole interview it would not have been enough of Jeremy.

    God bless him.

  • Oh I love his smile. I wish he hadn't kept his mouth covered for much of the interview. He was so humble. <3 <3 <3

  • One of the world's greatest actors meets one of its worst interviewers. Fascinating.

  • Wonderful to see our Jeremy, our veritable Holmes outside the familiar precincts of 221 B Baker Street. Love him more than ever - not just because of his talent or distinguished looks, but because of his innate niceness, his genuineness, and above all, for all he went through so bravely. That's what I call making every unforgiving moment count!

R.I.P. to the all-time favourite 'twinkler' of the Pinto family of "Woodland Gate", Mangalore, India. All of us love him.

  • In my opinion, Jeremy Brett is one of the finest actors ever. Actors like him should be stars, not dolts like Paris Hilton or Nicolas Cage. I so miss him and his portrayal of Sherlock. He was the finest, and a good man.

  • I will never call someone a "star" again..they will always be "twinklers" now.

  • He is just too adorable, it's surreal!!! :D

Come on, Jeremy darling, give others a chance! ;D

  • Wich year was this filmed?

  • @orca631 1989

  • Did that man's beauty know no end? He was still a remarkarbly handsome gentlemen...perfect Holmes.

  • Is it just me or did Annabelle shimmy a little when Jeremy and her exchanged greetings

  • Read holmes, watche Basil Rathbone, then ole Jez comes along - and blows everyone away ! Superb. Robert Downey Jr is doing a very much comic relief version, good for a laugh but storyline and characters for me, far removed from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's writings. But I still enjoyed the film on it's own.

  • @lucu01 I enjoyed it, too, but it really isn't Sherlock Holmes. What's worse thought is Jude Law's Watson.

  • anyone know of a particular book that collects as many sherlock holmes stories by Doyle as possible in one volume?

  • @dmcmichael88 you mean the omnibus, or complete sherlock holmes ? it's also downloadable on the guterberg project where copyright has expired

  • Derek Jameson is such a prick. Jeremy handled himself with such class though.

  • Derek Jameson is an absolute legend.

  • @AjrimmerMr derek jameson is a classless cockney git.

  • 0:00

I'm already shocked that this man was allowed to become a television interviewer.

  • Jeremy Brett is Sherlock Holmes :)

  • man he still looked very gorgeous here :) even in his mid/late fifties...

  • The Interviewer is a prick. Fucking cunt.

  • one of the greatest actors

  • what year was this interview?

  • eight lovely minutes with one of the best man that was in the Earth!!!

  • WHAT A MORON! An annoying, disgusting person!

Poor Jeremy. I think he's too kind.

  • What a terrible ugly interviewer.

    Brett was such a gentleman.

  • viva chavez!!!!!

  • espana puro negro y moro

  • 誰か 日本語に 訳してくれ

  • Wow! What an appalling interview. Jeremy Brett was a gentleman by far and he did quite well suffering such a horrid interview.

  • How lovely Jeremy is! He has such charm and grace. He could have easily got angry or offended but he was wonderful. I love him as a performer, but seeing this has made me appreciate him even more as a human being (if that doesn't sound too gushy!). What a lovely man.

  • jeremy brett was a superlative and natural actor. derek jameson is such an inane and patronising interviewer in this clip. brett gave so much of himself , researching the role of holmes so throughly. how anyone can place basil ratbone in the same league is completely beyon

    d me.

  • @ames462

i am of the totally opposite opinion on the relationship between rathbone and brett

btw, please get your spelling straight. :)

  • jeremy brett was a superlative and natural actor. derek jameson is such an inane and patronising interviewer in this clip. brett gave so much of himself , researching the role of holmes so throughly. how anyone can place basil ratbone in the same league is completely beyoned me.

  • ~Why does that horrible man make fun of his nose? Jeremy Brett is sadly missed.~

  • Particularly poor interviewer.

  • Derek Jameson was always a bad interviewer.

  • this interviewer is awful hes a dreary man he keeps butting in :(

  • jeez. lots of people sooner or later have some very depressive moments in their life, especially when death is involved and most people dont wanna talk about it. so if you have to ask about it out ask one question and then go on to another subject, dont push it. stupid interviewer

  • He was a true gentleman, even with this unworthy moron interviewer. A rare genius of an actor, a gem. He was beautiful, too:-)

  • Poor man.

  • Oh, he's beautiful.

  • THE NEW WATSON HAS DOLLS EYES JUST LIKE MY GOLDEN RETRIEVER!

  • This was terrible. A mediocre interviewer trying to be fun with the misfortune of Jeremy Brett. It's hard to believe that this really happened. Are things like this that makes a person to go down even further.

  • I think this interviewer must be Mike Myers in disguise! Christ! He's like Austin Powers with his over-sized glasses and over-sized teeth and that ridiculous accent! :) Jeremy is a class act as always. How patient he is, suffering this fool. (But, I'm dying to know what's in Jeremy's man-purse!) :)

  • I think this interviewer must be Mike Myers in disguise! Christ! He's like Austin Powers with his over-sized glasses and over-sized teeth and that ridiculous accent! :) Jeremy is a class act as always. How patient he is, suffering this fool.

  • I am sorry but this interviewer is just STUPID!

  • That interviewer is too much!

  • The interviewer trivialized his wifes death with inane jokes about himself in an attempt to make it seem as if they were somehow simpatico and was quite the ass with the repeated mentioning of alcohol to cope with his wife's passing. I've always loved brett as holmes grew up watching him. This interview does cause me to pause and ask one question I've had since viewing it. Who's the hot chick, damn that was nice.

  • the interviewer is a dick , Jeremy gets uncomfortable taking about his wifes death & his dealing with it & this ass keeps on asking about it,even asking if Jeremy took to booze to cope. To have such an icon on your show a waste his time with such dribble is truely pathetic. RIP Jeremy you are missed.

  • certainly a twinkler! haha!

  • ggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd i love uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

  • its vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvgood action i am fan from my class days

  • Rest in Peace Jeremy. You were a good man, who lived life to the fullest. You are one of those people I would like to have met before you passed.

  • He was beautiful. =)

  • Jeremy is bueatiful inside and out and a true gentleman. The interviewer should not have pressed on about his illness. It's fine to ask if they agreed on that before the interview but to keep on asking to the point where Jeremy want to change the subject. Ouch. I am just glad he was such good friends with Edward but I think he would have needed a Watson to protect him a bit his whole life long.

  • @Trampadoo I'm quite of the same opinion on every point.

  • I agree- appalling interviewer, embarrassing and rude- Jeremy was such a lovely soul and a gentleman to put up with that!

  • I was highly impressed by Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal of Holmes, but I will always think of Jeremy as the true Holmes.

  • what year was this?

gosh.. isn't it mad how fast time goes by ...

  • If you watch DJ throughout the interview, his smile begins to look rather plastic & his motives equally weak. Jeremy Brett was brave enough - and frankly probably had to mention - the anniversary of his wife's death. DJ cruelly manipulated this information & brought up the grief and alcohol use of Mr Brett on a day which must have been agony for him. 1st time I've seen this - i am astonished this man has not been had up for the peverse pleasure he took in the pain he obviously inflicted. sick.

  • Derek Jameson seemed intent on smiling & causing pain at the same time. To often bring up the death of Bretts wife. Mr Brett changed the subject, they talked on that & the interview is concluded with another deliberate & painful reminder of the anniversary it represents to jeremy brett. I was ugly and deliberate - mr Jameson ought to feel wholelly ashamed of himself. What motivated him i dread to think. But that it was deliberate and spiteful is self evident.

  • SHOCKING interviewer! My heart literally ached for Jeremy through this interview. Such a pure soul.

  • I agree so completely. Jeremy, being the kind and loving soul he was, humored this clueless interviewer by even showing up. All the while during this cringe-worthy bit, Jeremy remained jovial, energetic, polite and funny. Bravo and loads of love to Jeremy. Wish I could give Mr. Jameson a piece of my mind. :(

  • Oh. . he looks so yellow. What year was this please. Was he sick here? And if so, did he know? How do they do so many plays? Wow. I sure wish I could have seen them. :) I didn't know Sherlock smoked(?) opium? I thought it was just cocaine. humm

  • @Songsmirth thid has to be July 4th, 1989, he says his wife died "4 years ago" today. He had been diagnosed with manic depression for some years at that time, but not for the heart condition.

I understand though he had to take a couple of weeks off and get treatment at some point during the run of the show because he could not move/breathe on stage, so it might have been the first signs of this physical health decline...

  • That man, this Mr. Jameson...

Now, pardon me, Englishmen, I'm from the States and while I LOVE England I have so little knowledge of your TV personalities (outside Brett's run as Holmes and the Pythons, of course) so maybe I'm giving this Jameson a raw deal with my opinion, but really...

    That was horrible.

Beating Brett over the head again adn again with all these demons of his past, drink and class issues and failures and his WIFE BEING DEAD...only a pro like Brett...true class, RIP...

  • Derek Jameson is probably one of the worst interviewers in British television history. Practically insulting Jeremy Brett and asking daft questions.

  • @ManUMan2008 Yes, that is correct, and I also think that British TV shows are excessively dry and spiritless. Is that how it really is? Since you are a Britisher, what do you think about the people and its TV? (You have used the British word "daft," and that is how I know you are a Britisher if I am not mistaken.)

  • @consuetudinariness - Not all British TV shows are like that, but a vast majority are. Particularly chat shows, the ones that appear on TV nowadays are getting worse and worse. However, I personally find that some dramas in the UK are very good, and that's what I watch most. In fact, a modern remake of Sherlock Holmes was recently on British TV and that was outstanding.

  • @consuetudinariness And I'm the opposite. I look for the British material. Faulty Towers, the one about the priest who is a woman, the one that's about a hospital, the woman who is in charge of a detective unit(sorry I can't remember names. Just me), Black Knight, the funny prisoners, Bennie Hill, the crazy has-to-be-prim-and-proper,the old, up front woman and her companion, Tom,etc. I don't have a tv now but I also prefered your news. It was more extensive about the world. Thank you Poison. :)

  • WATCH, SHERLOCK HOLMES (THE ANIMATED SERIES) , TYPE IN - THEMAJORIST - ITS ORGINAL STORIES IN STOP MOTION

  • Derek Jameson... *sigh*, what a numskull.

  • What is Jeremy doing talking to this ASSHOLE, he's far too classy for this garbage :(

  • Comment removed

  • This would have been everyday stuff for Brett. The way that these people talk in double, like Catholic School. You only get that kind of snark from an island. Good job for Brett for keeping the conversation light and positive, and if you listen closely you'll find that Brett snubbed back a few times too.

  • @NenmarsRevenge thank you

  • Dude, let Jeremy talk!

  • Second Best My ARSE!

  • sucks that hes dead

  • If somebody could upload the ITV3 broadcast "Elementary my dear viewer", at least the bit about the actors who have embodied the part of Sherlock Holmes...

  • OMG - BOOZE? WAT? HUH?

that interviewer cant stop interupting jeremy.

  • never realised it before before Jeremy looked a lot like David Bowie, especially at 6:04. has that same look.

  • How many people think this excuse of an interviewer is a turd on legs?..... Jeremy Brett was the BEST Sherlock Holmes the world has ever know, his portrayal of the character was magnificent and accurate to the stories. This nipple-stick has no respect for Jeremy, suffocating him with "your dead wife, was it booze, your dead wife, was it booze" etc. What a vile creature. RIP Jeremy Brett

  • and here I thought that the worst interviewer ever was Pierre Berton during his interview with Bruce Lee....but my god, this takes the cake.

Jeremy Brett remained classy however, as we all knew he would.

  • "was it illness or booze?" my god how rude

  • @RainbowMouthx agreed and did you notice how he persistently asked about booze and his wife. not a lot else. Even when Jeremy changed the subject he tried to get the subject bcak to Brett's wife near the end.

  • Oh wow thats annabel giles! hot

  • I can't believe that there are such idiots of interviewers... incensitive gits!! How do some of these people get their jobs... who do they know.???? Jeremy once again cruises through with class.... not just because he went to Eton.

  • What year was this ?

  • hes manic here

  • The interviewer looks like Mike Myers' Austin Powers, right down to the teeth. god.

    Jeremy is classy.

  • Brett had to be a real gentleman to not to tell this creep "F... you!".

  • This interviewer is so horrible. And rude.

  • the interviewer may have been "off" but Jeremy still shines on. a true "twinkler." A sign of an angel, don't you think?

  • he might gained some pounds, but beyond that he's just as before "a twinkler" :)

  • I believe his face was a bit bloated from the medications he was on before his death.

  • What calls my attention in all the interviews I watch with him is that Jeremy Brett seems to be such a nice guy. A little nutty, extremely friendly and fun to listen to. It makes me feel even more sorry for him, for he had very bad luck indeed: his illness, his wife's death etc.

A most peculiar and interesting actor.

  • That host is a complete spastic ...

  • Derek Jameson is a stupid ignorent man...no tact and vulgar!

  • Derek Jameson - also known as a complete TWAT! Complete indifference to Jeremy's condition. Idiot.

  • Jameson.....What a tool! This was painful.

  • Comment removed

  • Brett brought something to Holmes that no previous actor did...no question!.........Jameson is a moron.

  • What. A. Nob. (interveiwer)

  • I feel so bad for Brett in this interview. Derek Jameson obviously didn't get Brett's true perspective on playing Sherlock Holmes, and besides that, he also spent a long time asking about Brett's depression after his wife died--to the point where Brett had to ask him to change the subject! Abominable job by the interviewer... My heart goes out to Brett in this interview...may he rest in peace.

  • @heartsrk I totally agree with your comment. The interviewer did do an "Abominable job" He kept implying that Jeremy's Manic depression, and breakdown were due to booze. Very untactful.

  • @heartsrk that interviewer is a tool

  • @heartsrk Ghoulish interview.

  • @heartsrk I agree with all of that! <3

  • Did he say that Jeremy Brett was up there with Basil Rathbone? Has he seen Basil Rathbone's appallingly hammy performance as Holmes?? What an insult! Shows what a true gent Jeremy was that he didn't punch him!

  • @katheast Oh, I disagee. Basil Rathbone played the best Sherlock Holmes. ~~

  • @victorianlulu Perhaps it's like James Bond- you always prefer the first actor you saw in the role

  • @katheast Jeremy Brett was brilliant as Sherlock Holmes, but you are right, Basil Rathbone was the first I saw to play the famous sleuth.~ What disturbs me is this nutty interviewer. He seems to be making Mr Jeremy Brett very uncomfortable! I feel sorry for him. ~ I really miss him.

  • @katheast not always. My first experience with James Bond was with Roger Moore. I hated it and never saw it again until about 15 years later when I caught Dr. No (or was it Thunderball) on TV... I had no idea it was so good. I've never watched another Roger Moore Bond but I've seen the others. Daniel Craig is quite good too - very explosive, though not as suave.

Likewise the first Holmes I saw was not Brett but Rathbone. I immediately watched all the Brett shows, never seen another Rathbone.

  • @katheast Nah, I saw Robert Downey Jr. first. Hated him. xD But I knew the books were better, so I read them, and then I watched Jeremy Brett's Holmes.

  • @HarryplusHermione When I saw Robert's Holmes first time, I imagine Herlock Sholmes would exactly look like that.

  • @katheast Rathbone wasn't bad, but Brett was a better Holmes (in my opinion. He had more of the subtlety of Holmes). Both of them beat Robert Downy Jr. though. :P

  • Jeremy Brett had brought Sherlock Holmes to life. I would doubt any other actors could possibly surpass Jeremy Brett. And I would always be curious that if Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would be fascinated that Jeremy Brett is more IDEAL than the Sherlock Holmes in his literature.

  • Mr. Brett ist a VERY good Sherlock Holmes indeed, theres no question there, but one cannot deny that Daniel Rathbone was very exceptional himself.

  • Basil Rathbone!

  • @FlameG102 Er, don't you mean Basil Rathbone? Good, but not Brett!good.

  • I love that he's wearing a rose in his shirt.

  • I can't believe how insensitive and tactless this interviewer is, if it wasn't for Jeremy's charm and optomism the whole thing would have been cringefully painful to watch! God bless JB!

  • Ironic, he was Sherlock Holmes!

  • The best Holmes actor!!

    For all eternity...

  • I love him!

    He was great!

May his soul rest in peace!

  • Derek Jameson's an ass.

  • Jeremy Brett rules.

  • Brett did a fantastic job of maintaining his composure during a totally insensitive interview.

  • This interviewer is just horrible. He is interupting him all the time. A good interviewer let the person talking himself. omg.

  • Just a great charming person! I love him! And u Frankclanton stop bitching here. Nobody wants to hear ur poor stupid comments.

  • This is bullshit!! Jeremy Brett is a charming, great person! I love him! And he loved his wife!! HE was not gay and if by chance yes, I dont absolutely care, because he is just a great person. In opposite ur a nerd.

  • damn, wtf! his wife died! u ass!

  • sorry rathbone, this is Holmes!

  • agreed...the BEST Holmes ever..smart, clever,

  • BEST HOLMES EVER

  • Two week old roadkill has more class than jameson... dear god. I'm so sorry JB had to endure that.

  • I know, this interview gives me a bad feeling in my stomach.

  • This was a pretty good interview. But I wish the interviewer had brought up his wife's death a couple more times.

  • @AKALucifer I hope you're being sarcastic.

  • Bringing up his wife dying and his "breakdown" was a huge FAIL. What an idiot. How insensitive!

Jeremy Brett was a huge talent and was an excellent Holmes.

  • 5:32 = win.

  • Sherlock Homms? Jameson was a quizzling, thatcherite little mole rat of a man, tolerated, presumably, for the amount of secrets and connections he retained from Fleet Street.

  • ta-bo-loids :DDD

Thnx for uploading this, Jeremy's the best!

  • Derek Jameson is a real jerk! If had been Brett, I would have left right away. How can this guy ask so many personal questions???

  • Who's the old duffer with with rotten teeth?

  • Who gave this Jameson bloke the job? He's awful!

  • for my North American friends he seems the Larry King of British television

  • Larry King is a boring old fart but he's not this bad.

  • I adore JB to death but he totally just did a ton of coke backstage.

  • @NicotineDesire

    did he :O

  • Oi! Shut it and let Jeremy speak! Sic'em Brett!

    What a dick!

  • My gods, can this guy be anymore insensitive? Learn a little tact.

Brett did a magnificent job of handling him, though. Bravo.

  • What a great way to handle that dickhead, Jeremy was an incredible individual.

  • Robert Downey Jr. As the new Holmes is really an insult to the great some of the world's greatest literature.

  • @barefoot55 To be fair, both of them portrayed Holmes differently, it's to tune with the modern times. Still, I prefer Jeremy, despite Robert being one of my favourite actors.

  • The best "Holmes" there ever was, or probably ever will be. He will be missed, I greave for him.

  • yeh, talk about his depression and keep going on about his dead wife - way to make a guest feel at ease. What a dickhead.

  • Yes, the interviewer is a bit cringe-making.

  • I lvoe this voice

  • I can only watch this when I completely zone out everything that horrible Jameson is saying... Poor Jeremy, I would have completely understood if he would have just got up and left.

Did anyone notice how Jeremy touches his nose every time he is uncomfortable about a subject? He does it when he is talking about being a star (everyone knows he was very down to earth about being famous), whe he talks about Eton (which he hated) and when he mentions the death of his wife.

  • It's lucky Jameson didn't ask him about his homosexuality.

  • Why the hell does the stupid interviewer keep on at the booze! He didn't drink nthat much as he keeps saying!
