Japanese have been whaling in their own coastal waters for a very long time.

They started this large-scale factory-ship commercial whaling in the Southern Ocean after they lost WWII and food was scarce. This is not a Japanese tradition, it was born out of necessity to put food in people's mouths.

That reason no longer holds water.

Sea Shepherd want to protect whales whilst these poachers want to hunt them to extinction.

The Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary is an area of 50 million square kilometres surrounding the continent of Antarctica where the International Whaling Commission (IWC) has banned all types of commercial whaling.

The Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary was established by the IWC in 1994 with 23 countries supporting the agreement and Japan opposing it.

No surprise there then, anything else would be like a turkey voting for Christmas!

I watched several videos and it is a little hard to determine because of the camera angle. It appears from the long viwe that the Japanese ship turned into towards the Earth Race, and the Earth race also moved towards the Japanese ship. From the close perspective you can see the Earth Race engins starting and moving forwards, NOT in reverse (unless they have to go 3~4 metres forwards first before the reverse kicks in). They are both at fault...

@JP8147 Wrong on two accounts, one the ship isn't gone, it's being towed back to port, and two they didn't pull in front of the ship, they went in reverse after the harpoon vessel sped up and took a hard right turn just to hit them.
