How could somebody dislike this video?! This is as sublime as it can get! I think this is the most intense version I ever heard - and ever going to hear, probably...
I saw and heard her at the Concertgebouw in the Mattheus Passion of 1991. It was mesmerizing, incredible, divine. Never heard a better version of this aria. She really was one of the very best (if not the best) soprano in the Mattheus Passion ever. Her death shortly afterwards was a shock and a very sad loss. Also a pity that this version is no longer available on cd. In real she also captured the public with her regal appearance. A true goddess!
This performance probably dates from March 31 1985 and it concerns a live recording from the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The orchestra is the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. At that I was a member of the boys choir of St Bavo, Haarlem and sung the 'soprano in ripieno' part. I'm very happy to have witnessed this moment of transcendental music-making; I'll never forget this moment of intensity between Arleen Auger,Harnoncourt and last but not least Paul Verhey, at that time principal flutist.
I had the privilege of playing in the orchestra for a performance of the Matthew Passion with Ms. Auger singing. This aria never failed to bring tears to my eyes. Her voice was directly connected to her soul.
Yes! and in being connected to her soul, touches ours so sublimely. Living in Frankfurt in the early 80's, I had the extreme good fortune to hear her quite a bit. I came to realize that with the first note out of her mouth, my heart would already open.

Lucky you are and it is an honour to have your comment here. Thank you also for the name of the flutist too!
(It is a pity that later on, Harnoncourt did'nt want anymore of this version, artisticaly.)

Do you know if there is a recording of this performance that I could buy?
Thank you!

The 1985 recording was on LP and CD,
3 CDs Teldec 8.35668 ZB
3 LPs Teldec 6.35668 GK
The record was a project to save the Concertgebouw. The musicians took no money for the record, so a new publishing is unlikely. Maybe ebay...
