@harb1712 slow calm movements so you don't spook the fish. I dive heavy for that reason...so I can drop in. Know you prey and their behaviors...use that behavior to get as close as you can before taking the shot...some fish are curious, some bottom scratching draws others in. ....focus your attention on the part of the fish you want to hit...spine, behind gill plate, or in head. The old saying ...fishin is different than catching...the kill is the least important part of the day out there.
@Warbeast911 Yeah...I hear ya...I live in the mountains so I need to watch the underwater videos from time to time. Used to sit on the couch and hold my breath while watching.
i would like to try a hawaiian sling but the vis in trinidad in not all that great at times and i'd probably lose the shaft. dreat vid, keep up the good work... dive safe
@ruddert1112 No Go Pro in this video. All Canon HF S10 in light and motion housing. I do have a few "critter cam" shots with a go pro on the "Undersea Reef Creatures" video on this channel.
Don't suppose you'd be so kind as to give name/GPS coords of this reef? I'm visiting the bahamas soon and I'd love to have some great freedive sites like this one.
do you have a string/rope connected to theend of your spears? also would a hawaiian sling or pole spear be better for a beginner. i am a good shot with a bow so i was looking at the slings but i dont know if u can tie a string to it. a reply is much wanted and thanks
@TheFFFQQQZZZ All video shot while freediving...all persons in this vidoe are freediving. Speargus are illegal in the Bahamas. I have several spearguns but only use them where legal and only while freediving.
@NickGallardo520 That's a Dog Snapper. Similar in shape to some other snappers, howevern the triagular light patch below the eye is uniquie to this species.
@12Youknowit No Idea. I would guess not if your arrows have feathers. A friend of mine is a metal worker and made some on his own...just remember, big fish can bend your spear so make sure its hardened steel. Most spearfishing shops will carry what you need.
@Freedive101 i just tested it in my pool with water bottles and it worked. The arrows have no feathers but they are a lot shorter than the Hawaiian sling spears so you cant get as much power but its a good back up in case you lose one.
@Sebbyy1996 I dive w between 6 and 12 lbs of weight w this suit depending on the depth of the water. I also like to dive a little heavy rather than light.
@Freedive101 heavy vs light. thats always an interesting one. why do you perfer to be heavy vs light while freediving? i am the opposite, i would much rather have a hard time getting down compared to comming up, especially when im low on oxygen. and all the noobs out there, start off light then work your way heavy, safest way to go. great videos btw
@ak74u2 Sometimes yes. Depends if you stone the fish and how big the fish is....with a freeshaft, you need to be very careful and selective about shooing...or you'll lose your spear.
@3li0tZ I dive with Beauchat fins now...used to dive with esclapez. The other guys in this vid dive with Cressi. I think two have the Cressi 2000 and one has the Cressi 3000.
Find a fin that fits your foot and make sure the stiffness of the blade is appropriate for your legs and ankles. A number of years ago I had some super stiff Esclapez fins...great for diving deep with dolphin kicks...way to stiff for the ankles and normal kicking. so: good foot fit and moderate stiffness on blades.
Hey have you guys ever considered a "Spare Air" tank, it's a tiny little air tank, that gives you about 30 or so breaths from a teeny tiny little water bottle sized air tank. That way you could stay under longer? AND you can refill it straight from your SCUBA tank
@Rinocerente No spare airs here...I stay away from the compressed air while freediving. If you get into a relaxed rythym you of 1 to 1.5 min down and 1 min up...you can get plenty of bottom time. just my thought on it.
i dnt really go spear hunting but wen yous go out do you do the same breathe ups as when you do freediveing or you just hold your breathe in the moment?
@MrAhynds I made a point of not having any kill shots in these videos. The kill is the least important part of freedive spearfishing, imo. There's an old saying "fishin's different than catchin"...its about being out there on the reef or in the blue and connecting. Anyway, Sorry no kill shots for your viewing...many other vids out there that satisfy that one.
Is the cameraman also freediving? If so, he's got balls to go through that cave at 4:01 !!
Anyways, amazing video, reminds me of my days in Utila.
And you are completely right when you say "...the *being in the moment* underwater is an aliveness that just has to be experienced to be understood."!
@Clemrocher all video has been shot while freediving. I have some other cave sequences taken about 12 years ago when I had better lungs and bigger..nerve. Might dig those out off the old camera (not HD) and post someday.
Glad you liked the video and the experience. Freediving certainly brings out that "in the moment" feeling...as long as you don't get too focused on killing.
As Keats once said "Nothing is real until it is experienced"
@untakenusername99 Thx. The hunting is a small part of the process...the *being in the moment* underwater is an aliveness that just has to be experienced to be understood.
@caseadilla44 Just a standard hawaiian sling spear. They come in different diameters...the thicker spear has more power but much less speed and distance than the smaller diameter spear. Shots have to be placed well on larger fish...or the fish will swim off with your spear (a free shaft): You lose a $50 spear and the fish dies in the reef...bad all around.
@gsotodotcom For Freediving on the Big Island...stop by the Blue Water Hunter in Kona. Good selection of wetsuits. Depending on the season...either a 3mil or 1.5mil. They have an online store. my 3mil came from there - Deep Thoughts camo. My 1.5mil is an Olmer Dahlak Mimetic...all of the people in this vid are using that model wetsuit.
@skim4lf 30 feet is great....that's plenty deep. None of this video was shot at depths greater than 30 feet. Relaxation is the key to breath hold...and its more about coming back to the surface than big bottom time. Get in a rythym of a regular amount of time under and recovery time on the top...you'll have more bottom time that way then going for a few long deep dives...always be safe.,,
@KR3AT0RAS thanks. Still trying to capture the moment of freediving....sometimes I think ya just have to be there. A quote from Keats comes to mind: Nothing is real until it is experienced.
@ycats1000 thanks. kinda cobbled this together...didn't get the planned shots. Had a nice shark run in toward the end of the trip but the flash card was full and the batteries died. oh well.
I swim alot at high altitude and do some underwater work in the pool before these trips but really...the key is to be relaxed and use little body or limb movements.
Depth and bottom time aren't that important to the experience. Do what works for you and don't push the limits....returning to the surface is what matters most.
@ freedive101 thank you for answering my question. Great video I watch it all the time

would a hawwiian sling or a pole spear be batter for using around docks and other things for sheepshead and snapper what one would be better to use.
