Saw Mike at Eric Schoenberg Guitars in BEAUTIFUL downtown Tiburon. Understated, superb musician, indeed. THis video with the legendary Bob Brozman, how could it possibly be less than outstanding. The recording quality could have been better, but at a NAMM show...what am I thinking?
Brozman's a great player but I don't know if he's such a great "teacher". In Volk's 2003 book on Lap Steel Guitar he had some rather narrow minded ideas towards musicians learning new styles; suggesting any learner who doesn't completely give themselves over -- body, breath and mind -- to the style they are playing, are then "dilettantes" ... and somehow not worthy. At least, that was the subtext. He's really good... but I disagree with this puritanical philosophy.
I got caught in the same squareneck trap...LOL

I love Mike's playing. That El Trovador with the hotplate is outstanding. So beautiful to play. Mike is an excellent teacher too.
