  • LotsofLasagna:

Actually, it is "turn your face to alabaster" because he's talking about making the woman turn pale once she finds out that he's her master instead of the other way around. :)

  • excelente

  • LotsaLasagna:

THe site I have located the lyrics said

    "face to alabaster"

Could you site the source for your lyrics?

    that be great. thanks

  • Oh, hm...I guess once I tried to hear "face", I could. I didn't have a source, I just always heard "flesh".

    My bad.

  • I lit all those candles by myself

  • the candles symbolize the fingers. it's so obvious.

  • @MrBert65 ..I flunked philo..I thought it was a phallic symbol.

  • Really qood sonqq i justt don't understand what's upp withh the candles?

  • Do the candles spell out something??

  • what a fire hazard haha

  • Irina - et huomaa

  • buenisima, me recuerda a mi niñez jugando con mis hermanos a que eramos Police, que tiempossssssss.

  • I will turn your face to alabaster

when you learn your servant is your master...

    best line in entire song

  • Um, actually, it's "turn your FLESH to alabaster" and "FIND your servant is your master". /nitpick

I agree though, it really is the best line. That entire verse makes my spine tingle. Easily my favorite Police song.

  • The 80's is truely one of the greatest times for music.... definitly one of my faves!

  • yeah atleast get some palm trees in there. the candles suck!

  • Great 80's music! I love this one, Now my 8 year old is into the Police........Thanks

  • To show how crap some things are these days, they probably wouldn't be able to make this video because of Health & Safety.

Early 80s - great music times.

  • lol dont you know it the world today s so moronated bring back the 80's life was so much simpler then

  • for the first half of the 80s I was still in high school and yeah life was so much simpler back then. All I had to worry about was getting my assignments done on time. Now I'm 44 and I have to worry about my 19 year old son finishing high school and providing for him and on occassion arguing with him. Life was so much easier when I was in high school....sigh.

  • One of my favorite Police songs. Their songs have a mystical quality. They are experts at building tensions, then coming together for the chorus. For 3 guys there is a lot going on. Great band !

  • Wonderfully! kiss from Poland.

  • i love the police:D

ahah my teacher had us listen to this song the other day and desipher what the song meant

  • Good teacher!

  • ya hes pretty cool :{D

  • love this song all time fav, whole album really

  • for me the best song of Police

  • So basically we create our own jail. All we got to do is knock down our creations and we will be free. Deep stuff.

  • wow!!! deep

  • I heard they didn't do much drugs, but they drank a lot of gin, vodka, scotch etc. forming their work.

  • I wonder how many candles they knocked over in rehearsals.

  • I love to blaze to this song cause it's spiritual sensual sexy and soothing. Sting is a musical genius as i'm sure everyone should know. I think his real name is Gordan Sumner. Bet when he was a kid they called him Flash. LOL

  • All about the Odyssey.

  • actually the song is full of letterary quotation. Scylla and Charbides, that are mentioned in the first verse, are part of greek mythology and are mentioned in the odyssey, but sting also talks about the german legend of "Faust". If you go on wikipedia you'll find the whole explanation.Great Song!

  • Babushka has an AKA 47, and she wants to know whether you want to eat Borschte in Puerto Rico... (Spelling???)

  • lmao isn't this the video i saw off family guy ?!..the one where stewie made his little video for susie lol

  • Police !!! un icono de los 80's I love uoy guys

  • yeah its an awsome song

  • listen to this in tha morning. ITS AWESOME!!

  • This is one of their best songs ever, but the video lacks imagination. They could have done so much more than to have Sting hopping about in a roomful of candles. Still, the song itself is a classic, and one of the best songs of the '80's.

  • great music right here

  • listen to the song Pushit by Tool. and compare the meaning and build up.

  • great song. people often compare the band U2 with coldplay. to me coldplay sounds way more influenced by the police. just a thought.

  • ahh im 14 again,MTV days

  • ohhh, yeah... MTV used to do the music video thing! It's been awhile, I almost forgot. It's been all crap for so long that I'm surprised it's still a network at all.

  • the police is the bomb-love this group

  • goood video...The Police always will be one of my favourite bands...i wish that now not just these very mainstream pop things would be promoted by the media, and we could see more contemporary videos in this kind of music-centered, more simple video way

  • Best Police song EVER! They are amazing!

  • My favourite song... fantastic

  • "Like Sting I'm tantric"

  • haha i can't believe Underoath did this. :)

  • I KNOW!!!!!!

  • they did a good job too!!!!!

  • One of the best songs ever written!

  • passion-intensity-love...........

  • Yokihoooh or some other knick name....naked in the arms of the prince in a caribbian sand beach..........and the prince love her with real and true passio...and the royal navy was protecting him...........Great moment of freedom......

  • The prince tell his friend to writte a song for her lover...and then , this is it....a master piece of music...I am seen the caribbean now.....and the lady.......

  • this song and king of pain masterpiece of music

  • underoath cover? fucking joke

  • I always love this song by the police. I song one night at karokee on my birthday. I love this song. Yes I am black girl. I do listen to white music.

  • Timeless music is neither black nor white. Its just great music that every denomination can relate to.

Sting is a great songwriter, and I truly miss the 80,s.Oh,and Happy Birthday.

  • Yep it sure is.

  • VERY .....WELL....GOOD

  • Amazing!

Takes me back to..... gosh, whenever. I don't quite remember but it was a good time in my life.

    Thanks for the Video.

    Sylvia York

  • wow, so many memories, its so good.

ps: i was 1 year old when that came out heh.

  • Weird is good. Awesome song. Awesome video. Awesome album. Awesome band.

  • maybe the weirdest video...... just throwing that out there. great song though

  • love this song. really fun to play on guitar

  • this has always been my favorite police song and my least favorite video. it's so goofy. "let's have sting dance around in a room full of candles. perfect."

  • LOL Really.

  • Indeed a very creative and original era was the 80s.

  • Best era in music, it had a sound unlike what has came out since, I can leave my satellite radio on the 80's channel and remove the tuner button

  • same here,

  • DISAGREEMENT!!!! i think the 70's were better (lol i can't believe when the levee breks by led zeppelin came out 24 years before i was born) but i do like the mysticism of the 80's and this song basically epitomizes it

  • Rock and Roll the meaning:

    1) REACT

    2) MARRIAGE then COMFORT RANK

(pension/credit, laugh, prof kid, bit0h, 3000 days celibate)

    ans:safe engineering (maple graphing)

  • what?

  • where could i find glasses like those?!

  • Agh, this song just, always, scared me. I remember hearing it when I was a little kid.

  • it's the intro. it so dark and foreboding

  • Why????

  • Comment removed

  • One of the best songs from the Police.

  • This is my favourite Police song(:

  • mine too!!!

  • Hi everyone,

I've been listening this song since i was 19 years old and i still love this song.

Does anyone know the meaning of the title?

    Thanks a lot

    Greetings from France

  • From Wikipedia: The song is a tale of an apprentice who seeks esoteric wisdom under the tutelage of an erotic teacher, eventually superseding the mentor to become the master. Like other Police songs from this period, it features mythological and literary references, notably to the Scylla and Charybdis monsters of Greek mythology, and the German legend of Faust.

  • Or, it could be about a young man being seduced by an older, married woman, becoming her lover. only to eventually make her become overly dependent on him.

Either way, I think this song can be interpreted both ways. It's still a dope song. Kudos to Sting, Stewart and Andy!!!

  • especially stewart, he's an awesome composer! just listen to the first 3 spyro soundtracks :)

  • Absolutely correct!!!

  • It has a relatively slow, almost foreboding feel in the beginning verses, modulating to evoke a lighter, triumphant feel as the student achieves mastery.

  • wats with the candles?

  • a 6.5 on that spin at 1:59 ...he messed up at the end :)

  • Reggae + Rock

    Sting knows the deal...

  • Love this song, one of my all time favs, thanks Sting(lol)

  • Love the Police. And love seeing these old videos!

The Police could have had some WAY BETTER videos than they do. The stories in this song and songs like "Shape of My Heart" and "Don't Stand So Close to Me" could have dramatic story videos. Instead the band members just sing and dance along!

  • i wonder whose job it was to blow out all of those candles

  • Mine. I just walked around around with one of those portable mini-fans from the .99cent store and blew them out. I got payed a dillion dollars...hahahaha! j/k

  • damn thats funny

  • amen.,.

  • Great song and easy listening. The first time I heard it was when the video clip came on the telly. It must have taken ages to light all those candles!

  • Boy, this song takes me back!

Love love love The Police. :]

  • Doing a Sting impersonation in HS (really shoddy one upon reflection) helped me get chicks. I'm so ashamed...

  • canzone bellissima, una delle più belle dei Police, peccato che il video è veramente brutto e poco adatto al testo della canzone.

  • whats this song about ?

  • Sting continues to be one of the most talented artistes in the business and there will never be another band like The Police

  • The Police are the Bomb. Grew up listening to them. I'll always remember listening to 'Every Little Thing ..." on my dad's walkman (back when they were a new thing) and tryin to figure out what Sting was singing at the very end for him. I miss the 80's sometimes. Not too much good music anymore.

  • rumour was he got burned from the hot candle wax twards the end...this is classic great rock and eternal music ...The police are divine.

  • yes, it burnt the cock off him.

  • I was going to ask you what is wrong with you and then i saw your page...get lost creep.

  • and then I saw your page, what twaddle: Declaration of Wank, no sense of humour or talent.

  • THANK YOU FOR YOUR OPINION WANKER now get lost

  • make me.

  • I dont make mistakes or monkeys piss off.

  • Typical fundamentalist attitude.

  • typical monkey responce.

  • typical illiterate "response"

  • typical youtube arguments.

  • That's why we keep comin' back.

  • who died and made you spelling police..monkey man?

  • Why, the ILLITERATI did, my fellow primate, and they made you my pet chimp. Congratulations, now dance to the music & earn your keep.

  • Nice reply, and I didn't even see the gripe

  • how did they make their bodies move in slow motion while making sting's lips coincide with the music?

  • told him to move his lips slowly?.. probably took a few takes

  • Classic..the student becomes the master at the end.

  • eh?

  • This video reminds me of watching late night video shows like Friday Night Videos or something. I was ten when this came out. I was a fan then and I still am today. Go out and buy their Box Set called Message in a Box. It's got everything they ever recorded all on four cd's.

  • This is my first year at college at 37 yrs old. I would like everyone to really look at their life and the loved and lost , of what was and is to be. it's your house : what are you building ? this song will help .

  • wow it's my first year in college at 32. A lil nervous but excited but I do agree with you about this song. This was one of the first songs I heard when MTV debuted back in the early 80's...memories man!

  • Good for you, Anthony! I turn 37 in a week and I got by bachelor's in my early '30s. Just know you are bound to get so much more out of your education than you'd probably have if you were 18. God knows I did.

    Godspeed!

  • this song is great just like us genx peeps

  • Slowly getting this virtual world!!

  • the 80s was a totally amazing time; this British group "The Police" like other British bands of this era really set the sound stage and paved the way for many young aspiring bands of the 90s and today! still love you Sting!!

  • 80'S & 90'S ARE THE BEST!

  • suprised you dont hear more comments on the guitar player of the police, i guess that isnt as cool or something. or maybe people are mostly dumb.

  • haha i remember stewie doing this in family guy when he makes a music video for the baby girl

  • Jeydon wales Wrapped around your finger is better. :)

  • Well, Police was once one of the best groups in the world! Yea, sting was a control freak....so was Copeland. They never got along in all their days of glory.....They would litreally get into fist fights!!!!!!

However, they managed to survive!!!!!it's all ego!

  • Copeland broke Sting's rib on one tour

    xD

  • Definitely one of their masterpieces, both musically and lyrically! Absorbing!

  • I first saw this on a show called Friday Night Videos back in the 80's

  • I remember Friday Night Videos. It used to be on NBC. Youtube seems to be the only place to find music videos, classic or otherwise. Unless it's rap music. It's everywhere

  • one of my all time favorites when I am driving in my Jeep, in our little town and it is loud.

  • Pure poetry... nobody writes songs like this anymore these days...

  • i love how their videos are usually them just bouncing around...only they could video tape themselves jumping around, play a song and call it a video

  • It's the drums!

  • I adore this song!!

  • this is so good !!!

  • This would so describe me if my girl didn't have excessive baggage... :( She's the most beautiful girl I've ever had any dealings with though and a great person except for discipline with her children. Maybe I just need to spend some time with them, but I have a nephew and he's not a heathren, not yet anyway, not around me.. It's a kanundrum..

  • no one asked you to tell your whole life story

  • no one asked you to reply hehe

  • cool story bro

  • The Kung San Bushmen of the Kalahari have been living in the desert for the last 22,000 years. Not until the 17th century were most wiped out by white man. Now sadly due to modern civilization they no longer live as hunter-gatherers>

We are all descended from Africa

  • They sure are jumping around a lot for such a slow song...probably the coke. Love the song though.

  • check the lyrics out in this song.. theirs a message behind the message. way kool/and the music is intoxicating.

  • omg i frickin luvee dis song!!!

  • yep awsome song

  • one of the best videos ever made.

  • Sting has way too much fun :P

  • guess what? mine's better :)

he's really describing gollum i think - "vanish in the air...", "face to alabaster", etc

  • he sounds like Gollum - "hit and attacked by you if i should linger, staring at the ring....shining band of gold...master, apprentice, etc."

  • that's "hypnotised by you if I should linger" unless you meant to say it a different way for some reason.

  • Never saw the LOTR connection before...Maybe Sting was reading Tolkien when he wrote this...amazing song...

  • *sigh*

  • I remember when this song first came out

  • beware! when you realize your servant is really your master!

  • wow thats some nice video with a ton of candles man it must of taken a while to set up the candles hahas.

  • I love the ending where Sting knocks over the candles. This Video is a TRUE CLASSIC. It's simple and not over done, unlike some of todays videos.

  • I know this was a low budget video, but I always liked it. It brings back happy childhood memories whenever I watch it. :)
