@DTNorthern He was directing traffic, he stops traffic at one intersection then passes the procession to stop traffic at the next major intersection. (or they have a couple of them and "leap frog" back and forth) It's hard to tell, but usually a funeral procession will have their flashers on instead of actually being marked.

Had the police officer maintained heading he would have just missed... instead he swerved, in the wrong direction - into the SUV. Ie point of impact is in right lane and left lane is clear.

The cops escort all the friends and family to the burial following the car with the deceased . so pretty much one cop stops the cross traffic at the front and the people need to stop so all the friends and family can cross (even if you have a green light or stop sign or whatever , u still have to let all the cars pass). the car should have known to stay in place until all the cars passed , that includes the bike even on the wrong side of the road :/

Hmmmm 60 40 to blame. I reckon cop is going too fast for the conditions. The Folk in the car saw her moving...why didn't he? He is passing a slow queue at speed with driveways on the left. and right. A car pulling out is highly likely. A cortege is still traffic and should not consider itself special. Other wise you will have another cortege a week later. Cops don't always know how to drive with care and consideration either.

Had the police officer maintained heading he would have just missed... instead he swerved, in the wrong direction - into the SUV. Ie point of impact is in right lane and left lane is clear.
This is crazy, how could that woman be ticketed? She stopped, gave way, there was a suitable gap in traffic & if motorcyclist was doing appropriate design speed of road an ample amount of reaction time for himself and SUV driver!

Added to this the motorbiker has very little skill - swerves in the wrong and doesn't even brake (even a small reduction in speed greatly reduces impact energy).

The physics that I was referring to was that your energy is proportional to velocity squared. In other words, double your speed and you quadruple your energy.
As a motorcyclist myself I have little sympathy for this particular police officer as he made the conscious decision to take an excessive amount of risk (regardless of whether car pulled out or not)

the cop was going back to the front of the procession to control traffic at the next major intersection . the person with the SUV was at fault regardless. I just can't believe that the motorcycle hit that SUV so hard that it flipped it. That really had to hurt.

it was a funeral. The cops escort all the friends and family to the burial following the car with the deceased . so pretty much one cop stops the cross traffic at the front and the people need to stop so all the friends and family can cross (even if you have a green light or stop sign or whatever , u still have to let all the cars pass). the car should have known to stay in place until all the cars passed , that includes the bike even on the wrong side of the road :/
