  • Love the cheeky Hamlet reference.

  • Its weird not hearing him in a American accent.

  • @crapcake813 And for me it's strange hearing him WITH the American accent

  • holy sit how long ago was this?! he looks so young here!!!

  • I fuckin love this guy! Watch him all the time on house!!! Another British icon!

  • DrJode

  • Built empires....? That time was long gone before the previous generation...no need for false nostalgia.

  • @cbuck33 I suppose you are right in that the glory days of empire were long gone but there was still a large British presence in the traditional areas of empire going into the mid seventies when the money totally ran out. Even today it could be argued that one of the reasons for us being in afghanistan and Iraq today go back to our colonial past and its aftermath. During the fifties and sixties the predominant areas of British were mostly in the middle east and africa.

  • Can somebody tell me if the folks in the United Kingdom are able to watch the show "House" there? It's a damn good show.

  • @deshy88umkc

We most certainley can and yes i agree it is a fantastic show!!

  • check out the face at 2:11;"does he know how to row?" Too funny!!

  • Who's the lady in the video?

  • I just love him!!!!!

  • I adore the Hamlet reference of rottenness in the state of Denmark :P

  • I just like tha spreadish talk of the british folks...

  • "that generation were empire builders"

  • If anyone wanted a Monty Python revival, he should be in it.

  • priceless reaction @ 2:45

  • Sneaky Shakespeare reference. Good old Hugh.

  • "he took modesty to the level of a martial art"

    like father like son :)

  • @ryder0792 how true.... this man has so talentes in so many ways and yet he's always telling everyone he's not good enough and really means it!!! And at the same time he's generous with the others working with with...

    WOW

  • Hugh Laurie a docter? No way, I can't imagine it! Hahahaha.

  • To think, his Dad has an Olympic medal in rowing which, if anyone has tried it, is sheer pain, control and determination from start to finish, and he kept it in a sock!! And then became a doctor in his 40s! You really don't get them like that anymore.

We may have better equality, technology etc but I think we've lost that respect, modesty & human decency. Everyone is so greedy and money-hungry. Theiving politicians, over-paid premadonna footballers, illegal wars...what next. Geez...

  • @crazypianolady

That's just bullshit, whining over the days of yore and how everything was better back then. It was not. Humanity did improve tremendously in the decency department as well, but true, the average joe is yet to live up to those great people like Hugh's old man.

  • martial art of modesty, i once took a class in that.

  • I used to know one of the Hong Kong Policemen who was thrown out - he became a University lecturer in London.

  • Hugh Lawrie discusses being a doctor!

  • Irony: Hugh Laurie plays a doctor on HOUSE MD now :)

  • Takes a great actor to play the idiots he did in Black Adder then do the seriousness of house.

  • @metallord999 Yeah it's a similar thing to Rowan Atkinson I think. You see him play Mr Bean and think what a loon, but then in real life he is a tremendously clever and well-spoken gentlemen!

  • I'm an American and I knew Blackadder I-IV and A Bit of Fry and Laurie long before House came along. I love Hugh's comedy work, but he's a good dramatic actor as well. I love British humour; I watch very little American tv.

  • If you like Hugh being a bit silly or if you like Stephen Fry as well I strongly recomend tryign to find some Jeeves and Wooster DVD's staring the two of them and a strong example of inter war, middle to upper class British Humour.

  • @ameroux I agree. It's sad we send our shit comedy to Britain and we don't get much of the British stuff in return. Blackadder was great, I don't think it ever aired in the States. Did it? That's a crime against humanity. BBC has many great new programs out. (I think Friends aired in Britain. What a bunch of shit)

  • @tryanjohnson Yes, Blackadder aired in the States -- that's how I saw it. It was on public television. We usually don't get new Brit programs until they're several years old, but they're still great.

  • @ameroux Yes that's right. It was on public television like it was some second rate crap. It should have been on prime time TV. Anyway did you see "Gavin and Stacey"? James Cordon is the man. Peace.

  • Thank goodness for the internet. I hate depending on TV for this kind of thing. Otherwise, I'd just know House and nothing else. I actually don't care that much for House but love to see Hugh's other work.

  • @munificent7

So glad you've found this! Hugh is an absolute genius. Jeeves & Wooster, Blackadder, and A Bit of Fry and Laurie are all comedy classics.

  • To be honest I'm quite sick of British people constantly bringing up the topic of House, they probably do it more than the Americans do. Simply to say "oh it'll never beat his old comedy....blahblah....Americans won't understand ...blahblah". If you want people to recognize his achievements in his past work then stop talking about how American's view him.

    /Not American btw

  • 2 Colm24e

    Irish?

  • Law originated in Greece. Thought you should know.

  • @17xlilax17

Depends if you're willing to count unwritten social laws

  • Then they aren't laws. Those are rules. Technically.

  • I feel bad for Americans.

House is great and all, but that's all they see of him..

We've got Blackadder and other stuff.

Hell, even the Johnson Baby adverts are amazing thanks to Laurie.

  • But apparently sales of Blackadder and A Bit of Fry and Laurie went through the roof in the US when he started doing House.

  • Oh.... My mistake, haha.

Even if they do watch Blackadder and A Bit of Fry and Laurie they probably won't appreciate it as much.

    It's a very British humour.

  • 2:43

look at her :) full the screen first

  • Full is not a verb.

  • oops!

    thanks

  • Sleek

  • darling

  • To bad Hugh is lost to American television

  • @bovargh It's a blessing in disguise... House MD Rocks!!!

  • @bovargh I'm an American, and I agree.

  • @bovargh

Well, he has some bills to pay.

  • @bovargh I'm inclined to disagree. Hugh Laurie anywhere causes a shining aura of television amazing-ness, no matter whether it is British or American television.

  • Anyone notice the Hamlet reference "rottenness in the state of Denmark!" Hugh Laurie is too awesome =)

  • ~ Amanda Holden fancy him !!! :)

  • who is the pretty lady?

  • Amanda Holden :) (actress)

  • Parkinson :P

  • Why people laughed when the host mention HK police force? is it that funny/ shameful for Hugh to be a HK policeman?

  • Noo. Its just a random profession to be in. I mean, he could have chosen anything-and he decided he wanted to go into the police force for another country. It's just the randomness of it that's funny-an unusual choice. :)

  • he so funny

  • How posh is Hugh? Could have Prime Minister !!!! Everybody gets jelly cos its nice xx

  • well he's a doctor now!

  • Yes, Hugh playing house is quite Ironic.

  • Hugh is so brilliant!

  • Amen my friend!

  • A Bit Of Fry and Laurie best sketch show ever :)

  • All Hugh Laurie fans should watch him and Stephen Fry in the "Wooster and Jeeves" shows.

  • It's "Jeeves and Wooster" :P

And also people should check out A Bit of Fry and Laurie as well as Blackadder!

  • They should start with Blackadder!

  • Yeh they should, was brilliant in its day.

  • do already

  • If you like Hugh Laurie I recomend wathing the Saturday Nigt Live that he hosted, BRILLIANT!!

  • i know ... but i like his house accent !!!

  • Or maybe its because House is a US drama and it would make sense to have an American doctor rather than Hugh keeping his British accent and having to create a huge story about why a British doctor moved to the US. That and I expect half the people watching would moan that they can't understand his British accent. Because you know...us Brits have liek teh wierdest accents evuurr!!!111 -__-

  • Your comment makes no sense...

  • lawl. I prefer his British comedy.

  • And the spelling... oh, the creamy old spelling! :)

  • omg,Hugh in his coffed brits accent,lolx^^

  • "He took modesty to the level of martial art.."

    hehe :)

  • I love the irony in asking him if he wanted to become a doctor!

  • God, I just love Him and trust that he is happy in his marriage to Joanna. Bless you both though I am far from being a strong believer in religion. That is left to the desperate lower class

  • ouch! that is just a little harsh.

  • lovely, first introduced to him with the P

G Wodehouse series Jeeves and Wooster, and was horrified to See him as Doctor House. Love him and blessings to him and Joanna

  • who is the beautifull next of hugh ???

  • Amanda Holden, I do believe.

  • apparently his name is Parkinson.

  • we're proud of what we achieved, but not how we achieved it

  • From all I've read and heard of and him: Laurie's father is the person that means the most in his Life, and he's tried to reach up to his levels in all fields possible. He tried to be a rower of world class, he thought about becoming a doctor, he has huge respect for these who have a 'proper job', and he doesn't consider his profession very 'noble'. Perhaps his unhappiness clings on the fact of his failing to become a Ran Laurie-like person, to be like that generation of men. A little thought.

  • @ImeldaLumos Hugh has taken one facet of his father, in that he has incredible humility about his talents. It must have been very difficult for him living under the huge shadow of his father's wide ranging excellence. Perhaps that's why he is humble. He has had great successes in his own right of course, but acting & playing a few instruments isn't in the same league as winning a gold at the olympics or becoming a doctor, regardless of the difference in pay! If only more people had his humility.

  • hes got a lot of patience

  • Amanda Holden - TASTY!

  • Was Stephen Fry ever on Parkinson?

  • Yes; scroll down the playlist right to the bottom, no. 34 is with fry and robin williams

  • Thank you, Pact89.

  • It's 'private' :(

  • Yep.

  • Laurie is right that in the late seventies most of the Hong Kong Police were bent. A lot of them ended up in the early eighties as Polytechnic students in London, and eventually became lecturers.

  • oh my, if he really did come to hong kong then, he might might be the Commissioner of Police by now!!! And I would be able to see him! ARG!!! but... then there wouldn't be house, ABOFAL and jeeves and wooster.... :P

  • he is a really nice dude

  • Having seen many of his interviews, and seen how he acts and responds to praises, I believe he is making of modesty a martial art, too!

And anyway he deserves it all, he rocks!

    :)

Does anyone know the name of the woman, though?

  • He's especially amazing in Blackadder! And that's Amanda Holden from Britain's Got Talent

  • Yes, that is where I saw her! I could not remember!

    Cheers!

  • Amanda Holden

  • 2:12 is the funniest face I've ever seen him make ! lmao !!

  • It's the kind of face he makes a lot in Blackadder the Third...

  • He looks better with beard

  • whats wrong with our accent. i admit we have a posh way of speaking but i think its easy to understand as we speak each word by itself and clearly

  • Not all english people speak like this though

  • depends where you grow up. some are rough, some posh, some seem their own language XD

he grew up in London so it would be more pronounced and he is from an older generation.

true thou, that there is variation.

  • If someone's having a problem with this they should try to translate a scouser or a geordie

  • rofl even i have problems understanding a geordie XD

  • I come from Barnsley - II could imagine a south Yorkshire accent is very hard to understand!

  • i'm a french woman and i have learnt english at scholl and university.i understand all what hugh laurie says!i understand better the english accent of hugh laurie than the american accent of american actors!and hugh is so beautiful,so sexy,so .....!

  • /bonjour Madame, Je parle anglais et en ce moment, j'apprend le francais à college et I understand exactly how you feel because I would be thrilled to finally speak french fluently and confidently :D

  • Hey, I'm french ok? In class we only study with american teachers, american movies, american songs, not my fault if I can't understand! I honestly can't understand him when I can watch tv shows without subtitles, how can you explain that??

  • Your 'knowledge' is limited only to one kind of the English accent and it shouldn't be, cause there are plenty varieties of it. If your teachers don't give a damn about it, you should! And stop blaming others for your own incompetence. I'm Polish and most of the time I'm exposed to the American stuff as well, but somehow I have been tought and introduced to all the possible English accents and I don't see anything difficult. Get a grip, stiop complaining and start reading some phonetic books.

  • I meant 'tAught', not 'tOught', my mistake, sorry.

  • What's the problem with not undertsnding an accent? I'm actually studing english, spanish and japanese and in those three languages there are so many accents, you really think I all know them? Of course I'm interested in the british accent and I never said it was a bad one! I pretty like it actually and when I saw how hard it was for me to get it, I watched more british shows! Just because I can't understand it doesn't mean I'm idiot or mean! I have the right to express myself, don't I?

  • love him!

  • Never knew how funny he is. Great stuff.

  • DOES HE KNOW HOW TO ROW !? AHAHAHA

  • You severely suck. Honestly.

  • hahaah me encanta, es un gran actor humilde y bello y ese acento:)

  • if he had come to HK, I would have been been proud Mrs. Laurie with couple of funny little Hughs by now. Sigh :-)

  • I hope you're a woman.

  • I don't really think it matters if they're a woman or not.

  • Haha yes kealyc, I'm a woman.

  • yes i agree 2! hahha good i'm not alone.

  • ...

  • Hugh is from Oxford, England. This is his natural voice. House 's voice is completely made up

  • they had really purty costumes in RHKPD (hong kong police force)...I wanted to be one too

  • can u upl.oad all of this please guv.

  • 'Denmark' Is a refference to Hamlet

  • what does he say about denmark, cant hear it

  • "Theres something rotten in the state of denmark"- Its a quote from Hamlet.

  • i just love the classic show that is 'jeeves and wooster.' british comedy is the best without question.
