I am sorry; this is all I have on video of this operation so far. I did get some snapsnots of a trio of high-nose GP30's leading a train from Swayzee to Kokomo is 1995. The tracks were in such TERRIBLE shape that probably could have walked alongside that train! Sadly, my video camera was in the shop at the time.
The signal is called a tilting target. I maintained it when I worked at CERA. There were at least three in Kokomo. The one in the video is two blocks north of the depot. The purpose was to let the train crew know which track had authority to be used through the diamond. It was manually operated. If the train did not have the authority the crewman would change the target so it could proceed through.
I have family in Kokomo and visit quite often. I know the line crossing US 31 sees seasonal grain loads, and the depot downtown still has several units sitting there. Everything else in town looks terrible. Overgrown and falling apart. I still notice tank cars appear and dissapear from behind a mall though.
That same stretch of track at the beginning is in sad shape now. no trains use the stretch from Kokomo to Frankfort, anymore. I understand that NS uses the Kokomo-Marion stretch for trips to/from Kokomo Grain, though.
Love those old units still earning their pay.
