I always hear Ali detractors talk about how this fight was "given" to him. I counted Ali going on something like a 50-2 exchange in the closing minute and half or so of the fight with Lyle taking some hard heat shots. You have to defend yourself. It's just like MMA. Ref made the right call. Lyle could have gotten legitimately hurt.
@Msumner316 good comment. i was gonna say the same thing...5 seconds after he tagged him, Howard woke up and clued in...totally legitimate stoppage...no response from Lyle...time to step in...i've seen much more premature stoppages...he never recovered after that initial forray...Howard asked him about the first 10 rounds, but round 11 was the first round ali set down on his punches....
@frankmahovolich The audio is behind, not Cosell. You can tell by the crowd reaction - everybody stands up when Lyle gets hit with the right hand, but the cheering doesn't come in for several seconds.
This was one of Ali's most brilliant fights. He showed everybody how you can use the Rope-A-Dope, without using the ropes. And many people till this day, still don't realize it.
I must say Ali was very tactical and smart in the way he paced himself , Ali was very patient and didn't waste energy , when his right cross contacted in the 11th round he knew he had his man-now that's a good boxer in fact the best !
The older I get the more I have respect for these "lesser" Ali wins... Anyone can win on their best night, but Ali found a way to win when he was not at his best. Behind that pretty-boy face was a tough, gritty and determined man.
No matter how many ifghts, interviews, and trining videos I watch-I'm still not sure if I'm an Ali fan. I can't help but have a respecct-dislike vibe toward him. Oh well, that doesn't change the fact he was one of the best(imo not necessarily THE BEST) ever to grace the ring
@PlushNunchucks ask yourself a simple question, which fighter do you enjoy watching the most and why?For me its Floyd Mayweather, cos i've never seen a fighter who does every single thing technically that well...
@onlyjoetee He was one of the first old-school boxers I liked when I first got into watching boxing, recently I haven't really been into boxing because for the most part today's boxing roster lacks in special talent. SRR has always amazed me with his ability to have such good footwork and form throughout the entierty of most of his bouts(the ones that were recorded anyways)
@PlushNunchucks Floyds much more skillful that SRR was, much more complete fighter.I've studied Robinson a lot, very effective fighter but never been into him technically,He was like a welterweight Mike Tyson to me..
@onlyjoetee mike tyson would never have his amount of patience not in a million years, but you are right about Floyd's skill. I just can't root for the guy, because I hate his personallity.
@PlushNunchucks what patience?LOL why dont people ever get it,boxing is not about being nice and sweet and kind to your opponent,it doesnt work like that!!its a fucking fight, its not tennis or golf!!your job is to hurt the other person, not to be nice to him LOL!!
@onlyjoetee well no shit, I meant mike would never have the patience to fight on the outside or work down his opponents. SRR understood that since he could fight on the outside well there was no point in taking unnecessary risks.
@PlushNunchucks the very nature of boxing as a sport, requires animosity between the fighters!Ali/Frazier Benn/Eubank Leonard/Duran etc thats how it works, yet people criticize Floyd for not being "nice"!! LOL He is the most skillful boxer i've ever seen, ever.I've learned more from him that any fighter in history..who wants to watch a fight between 2 people being nice and sweet to eachother?LOL..
@PlushNunchucks go watch Pacquiao v Moseley 2 fighters being nice and sweet to eachother, touching gloves every 2 mins, hugging in the press conference pre fight, all nice and smiley and compliments, was the most BORING fight ever LOL.Thank God for Floyd,he has a unique understanding of how boxing works, thats why he created the "character" Money Manweather, thats why he is the highest paid fighter alive!!LOL.people just dont get it,but genius by its very nature is always steps ahead of the rest..
@onlyjoetee Thats not Floyd being a character. That's just Floyd playing himself. An asshole. His character isnt what got him money. It's his management. And Floyd is most High paid fighter alive? Uhm... I think your mixing up Pretty Boy with Golden Boy. When Floyd was makinging like a like 3,000 in his 3rd professional fight (which is addmitedly impressive). De La Hoya was makin 50,000+ by his third fight. Also unlike Oscar, FLoyd isnt being targeted by the IRS.
@POTATER1228 This guy is the most technically brilliant pure boxer ever born,no question, controversial, highest grossing, call HBO and ask them about his pay per view figures they'll tell you.He knows exactly how to publicize himself, promotionally he's a Godsend, the guy literally prints dollars.everybody who's ever fought him, made their biggest pay in that fight, including De la hoya! You're talking about his 3rd fight?find out how much he made in his last 2!!hahahaha
@onlyjoetee Yes. De La Hoya made a lot of money when he fought Mayweather. because he's De la Hoya. The Richest fighter ever paid. Not just ebcause Mayweather got in the ring with him. Oscar Always has made more money than Floyd. Oscar has made almost 700 million in Pay per view fights ALONE. And is not in debt like Floyd; aka he OScar has every penny he ever made. Look PBF is a good fighter, but people need to stop painiting hims as a saint and or a devil or the worst fighter ever.

1:04 Straight lead right and the iron chinned Lyle gets staggered.
Anyone still thinking Ali could'nt punch?
Phantom punch, my tuchus (Liston II), classic "snake-bite" (Bundini Brown)
by the champ against a very formiddable, but still green Ron Lyle.
"Nobody laughs at an unfunny clown", wrote Boxing Illustrated.
What were they smoking?
RIP another GREAT heavyweight legend, Ron Lyle.
