i heard a rumor that the guard used to sneak frozen grapefruit up on the barbette and aim for the tower on cedar island...don't know if it's true or not...
Well their doing this to make it look professional, with the US Military of the time I doubt they would be as disciplined and would probably attempt to fire as many rounds as possible...
Where i'm from, geelong Australia, they decided at like the 100th anniversery of Ft Queenscliff to fire the 12" dissappearing gun (only one in Australia), but they forgot that back in the day they had a massive earth rampart behind the guns to absorb the shock, so they fired it, and it blew out every window in a 2mile radius, the prime misister who was attending was blown off his chair, as was everyone else
Not sure I would say sad. Sometimes to make it relevant as a tourist destination progress needs to be made. As far as I could tell they tried to make this as delicately as possible.
That wasn't a real round and the camera person fliched anyway. Truely timid people inhabit this planet these days. Shamefull. Where's the real artilliry videos, with live HE shells.
AGC on a camera or recording software will cut out sound like that too.... it's a shame, but it happens.. I will try to post some videos of Live-fire for you with the aftermath... both Canister and Bolt.
The last time they used a regulation charge, the blast shattered windows on the nearby military base. One pound of black powder still gives you plenty of smoke and noise.
I don't care if they use a full charge. I'd like to see an actual projectile fired, even if it is slightly sub-caliber. That splash on the water would be the coup de grace.
That would be cool. They still can't do it though, because the gun looks out over lake Ontario, which is full of boats and swimmers, so it's way too dangerous.
If the boaters know that live ordanance is going to be incoming, they'll clear out.
They could lob out an airburst shell first for a warning shot. When people feel a few barely cooled shell fragments fall on them, they'll clear out. They'll clear out for the show.
If you want to see a more realistic cannon fire , visit the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine. You won't be dissapointed.

Last time i was there i think they said they were using 8 pounders instead of what they used back in that time period of 10 pounders.

It was loud enough for me! Some people would see the humour in it like me, you choose to see shame? To each his own.

Other people would too.

Yeah it was a rather windy summer day when I shot this. We were lucky it wasn't too busy when we were there so we were able to get fairly close.
