  • Saw Steeleye Span in 1973 at Oakland Coloseum, opening 4 Jethro Tull. Liked them very much...but got 2 appreciate them much more as time has gone by.This and "All Around My Hat" are my faves. Thanx 4 posting. I luv Maddy Prior as much as I do Emmylou Harris, or Jacqueline Du Pre.

  • bogwoppet1 will never understand talent because he has none.

  • steeleye span is one of only a few bands that i've been able to get into from those years. i LOVE her voice here!

  • was this at uxbridge uni?? seem to remember it from many years ago & seems so familliar

  • @pamelasplayroom Uxbridge University? Publisher of the Uxbridge English Dictionary?

  • From the Golden time...

  • To all those intent on slagging SS/Maddy: I was always taught that the only valid criticism was to do better yourself. Now, if you'd like to try, I'll give you a fair hearing. Otherwise, sit down and be quiet so the rest of us can enjoy this.

  • Love 'em. Very imaginative.

  • Maddy Priors voice. Screeching nails down a blackboard. Sorry, but I think Steeleye Span are the emperors new clothes destroying many a great traditional song.

  • I think Thomas was taking the mick, ''Mighty Queen of Heaven'' worth a try!

  • lovely just lovely

  • Who's the drummer? He's awesome.

  • @goodbyezachry he always said it took him a long time to get the changes for thomas the rhymer

  • Love their music. Maddy has an incredible voice.

  • Amo a sonoridado do Steeleye Spam.

  • Wow, what a voice!!!! Hail to you.

  • Oh God Maddy, I will love you always. Sweet queen of Elfland. Even when you are wearing the lounge curtains.

  • @MrGoneTroppo Lol - spot on!

  • @MrGoneTroppo "Sweet Queen of Elfland" what an AWESOME description of the woman that captures her 'spirit' perfectly! MOST impressive!

  • @MrGoneTroppo Ha ha ! Agreed. She could wear a bin liner and still it would work for me.

  • Love it :-) when was this? at a guess... late 80's???

  • Everyone should buy this DVD.

  • @amalshookup Yeah, that FOLK ROCK dvd is indeed a surprisingly great collection to get into the genre's classics. i came to know many great bands on it.

  • Cracking Version,Love it!

  • This Group means business, lovin the drummers groove, not to mention he has got one the most coolest beards ever.

  • This is brilliant!

  • crom would be pleased.

  • This is such an evocative rendition, so much more so than the album cut, and Maddy is breathtaking in her range and power. I'd just listend to "Cam ye.." and that

is an amazing scale changing vocal. Still, almost nothing compares to the raw

life force of their promo on All Around My Hat. It's splitting hairs, I know, it's all so fine.

  • @rappafish The similar studio version is on the Steeleye's "Rare Collection 72-96"

  • I love girls who wear tennis shoes and white socks with their dress, total turn on!

  • @iannickCZ "rather not see" This is something I've never understood: why people who'd "rather not see" or hear someone/something keep on looking & listening. Masochism, maybe? Lack of anything better to do? Inability to locate a channel-change or input-selector control? Mayhap you'd be happier w/ some Britney Spears? You clearly won't miss Maddy / SS -- and won't be missed, either. See how easy? Everybody wins.
  • Derrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  • One idiot pressed the wrong button.

  • takes me back

  • Maddy is simply mesmerizing to watch.

  • Brilliant band .. awsome sound. I feel sure that our own Aussie folk-music legends, the members of the original Bushwackers Band ( especially Dobe Newton + Bill Smith / Jan Wozitski), must have touched base, musically, artistically & creatively, with Maddy & the members of Steeleye Span, somewhere along the track during the 1970s ...

  • Are the Bushwackers up here at all? I miss hearing them.

  • Brilliant, wonderful music.

Talent and spirit as far above crud like the "commenter" atfatw as the clouds are above my dog's turds.

Lacking any skills at all, or even any resemblance to anything civilized, it can only smear it's feces over the YouTube comments sections. It is, of course, a Muslim.

Ignore it for the obviously worthless filth it is.

  • @CheckDare He just gets up my nose and makes me want to hit something. I've loved Steeleye since the '70s and someone saying such nasty things makes me wonder what sort of childhood they had, that they can't be at all civil.

  • @carollizc ha ha ha splendid! glad that I can help!

  • @CheckDare

am not an infidel but you 'sir' or madam or a bigot, a racist, and a complete krel.

  • @atfatw

If by "bigot" and "racist" you mean someone that can spot an imbecile when he sees one, then I have to agree! Plus, you're clearly a muslim, so what are doing listening to music? Isn't that bad juju, or whatever your insane "faith" calls it?

Now, go get your mother to change your underwear for you, and then we'll talk further; because right now you're stinking the joint out, "atfatw".

  • @atfatw

You're going to get yourself beheaded by your perv-brothers by denying your "true faith" like that, "atfat"; or is that just that weird lying thing called "taqiyya"? You know: the reason nobody can trust you bastards?

Go & jerk-off over at your favourite beheading-video swap sites and leave the people that actually take joy in life alone, filth.

The only thing that'll happen before 2015 is you'll be in jail or more likely dead, you paedophile-worshipping, retarded death-cult pig-licker.

  • @atfatw

Now, as much fun as we're having my little pork-chop, I've got things to do. But, as the "moosleems" say: MARK MY WORDS - I'll be back soon, 'kay?

    Write if you get work!

  • What a voice... There were two very distinct white female folk/pop voices in the seventies, one was Mrs. Carpenter's and the other one was Mrs. Prior's.

  • @ballonfisch

    are ye thingkin' Karen Carpenter?

    She didn't mary her Bother.

  • @telemacherT2

Ms. Carpenter was from London its very common and legal there as in all of england

  • ドラムがいるSTEELEYE SPANなんて.....。

  • GREAT STUFF (Australia)

  • Excellent video for a top notch Steeleye tune. Maddy as usual, puts her best into this song...she's remained a centerpiece for Steeleye over the years, and her contributions to Steeleye Span have been enormous.Of course, the whole band have made giant contributions to music. Thanks for posting this great tune.

  • I saw them years ago in a very small venue in Denver. I was no more than a few rows away from Maddy. It was magical. A night I will remember for a very long time. Maddy's voice has held up so well over time, unlike some other musicians of the day (Ian Anderson comes to mind). So few people even knew about the Span - usually if I said the name, people would refer back to Steely Dan! I treasure their music and my memories.

  • @atfatw And your point? Go get a job you fool.

  • @atfatw I see that you describe yourself as being a student of Zen Buddhism. You are most definitely NOT that, not with the nasty way you comment and call people disgusting names. You bring disgrace to the Buddhist way.

  • @atfatw Old crippled and fat people still vote, and to my mind, that defines democracy, unless you're suggesting that voting rights be suspended at age 45. BTW, "in the old days", if you survived childhood, bearing children, if you were a woman, war, and epidemics, you stood a pretty good chance of living to a ripe old age. Many of our great thinkers, writers, poets and artists did so.

  • @atfatw You're back! And I thought you had strangled yourself out of self-hatred. I guess your therapy failed.

  • @atfatw Apparently, you like your women barefoot, and, I suppose, pregnant. Belt up and let the rest of us enjoy the music. You don't appear to be enjoying it, so why in heaven's name are you here? There must be songs somewhere that trolls enjoy.

  • @atfatw I'm Canadian. Apparently, you can't appreciate good music either. Otherwise you wouldn't spend so much time tearing it down. Please go off to where you *do* like the music and the company is also more to your liking.

  • @atfatw Flunked your geography lessons, too, did you? It really isn't true that we live in igloos year round. In the summer, we live in tipis.

  • After 40+ years, still fantastic! Is Seven Hundred Elves by SS uploaded anywhere?

  • Thomas Learmonth better known as Thomas the Rhymer or True Thomas, was a 13th century Scottish laird and reputed prophet from Earlston in the Scottish Borders. He is also the probable source of the legend of Tam Lin. Sir Thomas has a reputation as the author of many prophetic verses. Ellen Kushner's Thomas the Rhymer is a full-length novel based on the ballad and associated folklore.

  • A favourite because was born and bred in our village.I think this tale influenced Tolkein .A lot of parallels can be drawn with Bilbo and in an early essay of Tolkein he name checks Thomas on numerous occasions

  • Thanks! I never knew they put this to music - it's one of my favorite poems.

  • Maddy has been the 'vocal queen' of folk for as long as I can remember (45 years)? Arguably the best female vocalist in any genre for a century. That clarity and power of expression is hard to match.

  • @atfatw you are an idiot.

  • i loved this song so much on the lp i lost... thanks for uploading!!

  • @atfatw

    Not getting any, eh?

  • afatw - English isn´t mandatory on youtube, but correct spelling and a bit of behaviour might make you look less of an arsehole.

  • afatw - I´m very sorry to have hurt your feelings by using correct spelling.

  • There's a whole lot more of the poem in this version than in the one on the CD.

And Maddy does a wonderful job of evoking the seductiveness of the Elf Queen's offer.

    Really great video!

  • Brilliant Fucking Wicked!

  • The line up of Steeleye Span has changed a lot over the years: But each version was still brilliant. And as for Maddy - She is just brilliant!! (Seen 'em live loads of times since way back in the early 70's - they were fantastic). And what's with all these venemous 'clever' posts? .. If you've got nothing constructive to say you should just shut up!

  • @johnrichardkirk Yes, Maddy is brillliant! And yes, it's obscurely fascinating, or fascinatingly obscure, why some posts on Youtube, and not others, attract the attentions of the seemingly mentally unwell. There's scope for a psychology PhD thesis there, I should think.

  • I love Maddy and Steeleye Span!! I am greatly thankful to them for 40 years of damned good music!!

  • Comment removed

  • Y'know, that's rather sad.

Not that I'm inclined to pity him, but really, an imaginary friend to have someone to agree with you . . .

  • @Pangael

Initially I felt so too, but then his 'relationship' with VioletLoveable became a vehicle by which he could vent his true agenda - I've been waiting for this - he's an extremist anti-abortionist. His interest in Buddhism is two fold, to engage with women artificially and to have another means to express his 'respect for life'.

It is curious that he focuses on Maddy, possibly one of his delusions that he perceives some slight from her. Dear Maddy, l hope she never comes here.

  • @atfatw

You would be very surprised to learn young fella, that there are other countries besides:

    Amerika,

United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland,

and the Republic of Armenia - the nation we yt folk have to thank for your presence on Steeleye Span and Pentangle pages.

It is never too late to change, to be respectful of women and other people's opinions. You might actually eventually find a friend, even a female friend (optimism is a worthy quality).

  • dude!

i will ask again why have you got so much hate for Maddy?

you keep bad mouthing her but for no reason, well no reason that you have given.

you are being a proper gob-shite. you say all these things but with nothing to back it up.

  • @atfatw

hit a nerve there have i????

im not the only one who thinks waht you say is pants but maybe im the one who tells it like it is.

    so lets get this strait

    i may be stupid

im going to burn in hell

but its not going to stop me from from voicing my opinions about the crap you write

  • @atfatw , please do us all a favor, and crawl back under the rock you came from, and let us enjoy this wonderful band!!!

  • No need to be shy about your links with Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. I am quite amazed at reading your posts on those pages, your tone, spelling and syntax are impressive. Most exciting of all of course is that you manage not to express your hatred of women there. Quite extraordinary really.

I understand your different personalities with your different 'names', but posting under fat twat and being civil had me (almost) speechless.

So you can be civil - you just choose not to be.

  • I am quite amazed you actually still bother posting ridiculous comments, atfatw.

  • By all means make Maddie retire just so long as she can live with me and be my mistress.

  • @atfatw

You know what? I wish someone would make YOU retire, you pathetic little worm!

  • @atfatw

Oh goodness, that was a mature response - can't you manage a proper sentence then? Poor pet.....

  • @atfatw

Oh dear, did somone steal your shift key? Or were you just never taught about capital letters?

  • @someonewithtaste

He does know how to punctuate and construct sentences quite well (Amglish spelling persists), however he chooses not to, in order to irritate any reader kind enough to peruse his verbiage.

  • Obviously from someone who'd know (LOL!)

  • @someonewithtaste Hey maybe he's the worm that Allison Gross created when he spurned her love....

  • Besides her beauty her singing was

  • Well, her singing is fantastic and she herself is not bad. But 2 call her a beauty...

  • atfatw has a picture of winston churchill in his wallet which he kisses everyday. he has also been known to snuggle with a margaret thatcher doll, this much we know.

  • gadzooks!

    what's up with you?????????????????/

  • @poodlewip

Strange but true, atfatw has sublimated his hatred of NATO in Armenia/Turkey onto the British and Dutch nations.

Because he is a coward, he focuses this hatred on what he perceives as their weakest citizens, their women.

Maddy is beloved across hemispheres, across 40 years of reviving wonderful music from centuries ago.

atfatw desires Maddy, but knows this English woman would never have him. He projects onto her all of his insecurities about himself.

  • @atfaturk

    Project much?

  • We're all Thomas the Rhymer.

  • Maddy Prior is a folk-rock goddess. End of discussion chaps.

  • I first saw them in San Diego in 1973 in one of the most mis-matched concerts I've ever been to: Steeleye Span opened, followed by the Mark-Almond band (blues-jazz fusion) and headlining was J. Geils Band. The only recording I bought because of that concert was Steeleye Span. I went because of the other two bands, but these people captivated me! Maddy Prior had a good time on stage, singing and dancing around.

  • Well I used to go to all punk / new wave gigs as a teenager and forgot about Steeleye to my shame...30 years later I realise they`re excellent !

  • good ole Maddy..this song was produced by ian Anderson..and the production

  • Looking forward to seeing Steeleye play in Melbourne on Saturday night. This is the mid-90s line up with Tim Harries on bass & Liam Genochy on drums.

  • i enjoy the english mythology, how good and ill shift so elusively,. fairie folk can be trolls, and Trolls are great big Fairies!

  • 5 days and counting til they're at the Birchmere (and so am I :D) *happy squee*

  • Truly the comments are the best part of youtube.

  • a wonderful song i aspire to maddy's unusual and beautiful voice!

i also wanted to comment on how strange it is the past few comments have been regarding weight?! its just so random! why dont we all focus our attention on this bloody marvellous song instead eh?!

  • Go Maddy Go !!

Saw Steeleye on their 40th Anniversary tour earlier this year and believe me Maddy and the boys can still do justice to this one.

  • Beautiful singing from Maddy, and Peter's fiddling was inspired, too.

  • Willie Nelson told me "Find a pretty girl in the second row, and sing to her. You can't sing to the CROWD, you've gotta sing to SOMEBODY." That's what you kids call a protip.

  • Fan aged 13, then shamefully ignored them, got into punk new wave...funk...jazz..then twenty years later, I thought-hang on !-Steeleye were (and are) great !

  • Ditto! Saw them in May,absolutely brilliant.Maddie and Peter Knight are still as good as they ever were!!

  • saw them a few weeks ago. still a class act

  • And YOU, I suppose, are a thing of beauty and a joy forever? You flipping arsehole. Her VOICE is the thing, and her face, and her spirit. I'll give YOU fat, you damned idiot.

  • Weight has little to do with true beauty, aftatw.

  • People change with age, it could be anything. Genetics, thyroid condition. There's nothing wrong with any of it.

  • I'm sorry you feel that way.

  • A few more wrinkles, a few more pounds between them - compared to what meets me in my shaving mirror in the morning...don´t ask for a video. They are GREAT!

  • Comment removed

  • I've been a fan of Maddy for more years than you've been breathing, unless I miss my guess.

I'd appreciate it if you and atfatw would confine yourselves to sending insulting e-mails to each other, and leave your juvenile maunderings off this site.

  • I apologise for juvenile banter with atfatw but he makes me cranky. He is always putting maddy down. FYI .. I am 57 and I saw them live(1973) and have loved them ever since..cheers

  • Lucky you ! I'm a bit older than you, but I'm sad to say I've never seen her in person. I can certainly understand how atfatw can make you cranky. Wankers always make me cranky, too.

  • atfatw, I'm impressed by your mental acuity. Not only do you know what sort of work I did, but also that I was paid more than I was worth for having done it.

As far as my mouth is concerned, I don't recall having any rude words in it of late.

It isn't necessary for you to be disagreeable all your life; take a day off once in a while, why don't you ?

  • atfatw, No, I don't recall, since I've not watched t.v. in a number of years. I wasn't aware that the BBC had made a t.v. program about the Hitchhiker's Guide. I read Adams' books, and I suppose you refer to Ford Escort, the alien. It might be worthwhile for you to review the rules of grammar and spelling that you ought to have learned in Grade 3 or so, just a suggestion, mind.
