The only thing I've read by McCarthy is The Orchard Keeper, which I believe is his first novel. Are the later ones, prose-wise, similar? 'Cause, I really loved the story itself, but the prose is often a lot like the sort of overblown, hyper-descriptive prose Eli Cash reads aloud in the movie. I liked the book, I did...but, idk, maybe 'cause it was his first offering, but it really feels like he's trying awfully hard to sound literary or something. Are the later books the same style?
@MckyMseNTarotCrds I've never read The Orchard Keeper but it probably wasn't his best work. I suggest trying Blood Meridian to get a feel for him at his best.
@MckyMseNTarotCrds The Orchard Keeper is the worst of his early novels. It's far too beholden to Faulkner, self-conscious and padded. Suttree and Blood Meridian are his masterpieces...both would be in my top 10. Child of God is great, especially if you want a shorter read. You could probably finish it in three hours. Outer Dark is even better, but it's quite weird and it took me a couple reads before I could understand the plot. All the Pretty Horses is good; just avoid the movie.
What this book pre-supposes is... maybe he didn't?

I always saw Eli Cash's first novel "Wildcat" as a reference to the oft-mentioned Wampus Cat in McCarthy's first novel "The Orchard Keeper"
