When I was an undergraduate student, Sebok came to play a recital at my college. We had a Baldwin. He asked me if the piano had been tuned. I said yes, but I would have it retuned. "Would it be the same tuner?" "Yes." "I doubt if it would help. "Is a Steinway available?" "I'm sorry. No." "It is much easier to get a good tone from a Steinway. Too bad." In two years, there was a Steinway.
I think I record on a USB-Stick György Sebök´s interpretation of the Intermezzo and put it into the envelope with my testament to be played at my funeral. This interpretation is beyond this world and enters a world of beauty and peace.
@von2Braun ... it's absolutely the same feeling i had when i saw/heard it while i recorded it from tv. So, if you do, i advise you to add Fischer's interpretation of the Bach transcription of Marcello's Adagio from Concerto in D minor ;-) ... anyway all Fischer's recordings are a source of inspiration
no sorry romantic music is inspired by nationalism, ALL music is inspired by strong emotions, its an artistic expresion, and bach is one of the most emotional composers. is you want mathematical perfection buy a calculator, and leave music for people with feelings
i think i resonded to this video before, its in my favorites.. but truly.. bach is so perfect. Nothing in this world.. not even mozart, not brahms, not fauré not rachmaninov not tsaikovski noone noone noone can get close to it.
@Calamaistr Βach is the only proof to me for God's existence, it's not just a mathematical expression, it's the expression of the whole universe that lives inside us and his music express those feelings which of course we can't name them because we thing that human and God is separated......

This is ladies and gentlemen the true legacy of the War: A global mentality which demands fast and efficient things, whether they regard products or emotions. Remarkable video!

Thank you for posting this. I heard Sebok in recital in Chicago in 1975. My piano teacher at the time was working on her DMA degree at Indiana University. She had studied with Sebok there and invited him to give a recital at the college where my teacher taught in Chicago. He played some Bartok and Liszt. His performance of the Liszt Sonata and Liszt's Weinen, Klagen transcription were quite lovely and memorable.
He inspired so many of u.His authenticity is apparent.Too bad i know really nothing of his playing. Thanks for posting this here.He is always talked about with respect as a teacher .
"Das Wohltemperierte Klavier", Volume 1, Preludium n° 9 in E Major - BWV 854... Note that ALL Bach compositions are masterpieces, sculpting small pieces of mankind proud. :-D
Sebok could see through you, he could communicate with just a look, he understood life and music beyond most artists, he loved, he cared, his art form is pure genius, something we are losing in today's generation. How fortunate to have studied with him, and THANK YOU for posting this video. I hope more will come, as I miss him dearly.
what a pianist. My teacher studied with Mr.Sebok, and i now i´m trying to end piano studies fighting against my actual teachers that don´t understand music and piano like this man, they prefer russian school, but i think thats shit, the music converted in acrobatics at circus...
My mom studied with Mr Sebok. I had the pleasure of going to several of his masterclasses. He was a gem. The memory of him is great for me still. Besides being one of the best pianists ever, he was a kind, gentle man and I always felt it was a gift to be in his presence.
The only way to really learn about him is to have worked with him - he was a musician's musician - a great pianist, human being and musician. Eliane Lust (whose Bartok Sonata is here on youtube worked with him for years and represents much of his philosophy) so check that out.
He taught at Bloomington for decades, and was a permanent fixture at the Banff Centre in Canada (which holds audio copies of his master classes), and at Ernen Musikdorf in Switzerland, where this was filmed. Some of his recordings still available: Brahms Sonatas with Grumiaux, Franck/Faure (Grumiaux), much of the cello rep with Starker, and a box set of solo. The recordings from Ernen are available, too.
I remember how impressed I was as a piano student by Sebok's accompaniment to Starker's cello sonatas of Brahms.A real pianist in a world now filled with caricatures. Many thanks for this post.
Even the mistake is gorgeous and unique

what his master class video no.5 from minute 10 to the first 25 seconds of part 6 masterclass.
the sentence or the Idea so to say is about control .
he says there are two ways of controling :control with tension or control with freedom and mobility,
and then the example of the french waitress .
"CONTROL WITH FREEDOM AND MOBILITY","SHE HOLDS THE SOUP WITH TENSION AND SHE SPLITS IT PROBABLY"
