FAA requires that 40 mins of extra fuel be on board in case of weather or just being in a holding pattern. The wing did not hit the ground. If it did, everyone on that plane would be dead. It would cause a spark and ignite hundreds of pounds of jet-a fuel which are held in both wings and a smaller central tank. A plane flying at 36,000 feet doesn't have to worry about weather.
Ok, I'm a USMC F/A-18C pilot. This move is called a crab. The aircraft turns into the wind to maintain lift. At about 40 feet above the runway, the aircraft turns and aligns with the runway. The cross wind was not 155 mph, because that would be a hurricane. It was probably about 50-60 mph. He also did not divert due to weather. This was either his assigned airport or his secondary which would be on his flight plan. This did not have anything to do with fuel either
totally agree, crab is a usual move at landing for pilots, here the last part of the move isn't done, when wheels touch the track the plane is still on crab position, the pilot made a mistake..

Although it may seem that the pilot saved lots of lives, the truth of the matter is that the pilot should be fired for risking the lives of many innocent passangers. The pilot should have never attempted that landing and should have diverted to an alternate airport.
Yes the pilot did save the aircraft, but they should have known the X-wind component of that aircraft, what it can and can't handle. and they should have picked another location to land, so they almost fucked up. Because of there stupidity they damaged the aircraft they almost killed a lot of people...... This is a result of being cocky and feeling invincible in the cockpit.
Man, these pilots have nerves of steel. I was on a plane that did this in February of 2002 at Laguardia Airport. It was a 757. I was seated right on the wing. We were landing in heavy wind and we bounced once and went back up into the air. We were then hit with a massive side draft. I was lifted up and out of my seat-even though I was belted in-and watched in horror as the plane's wing nearly hit the runway-twice. All you could hear was the engines cycling up and down. We ended up landing hard-on all three landing gear.

The pilot does not have to do what he is told by the controller. The pilot in command is the final authority in every phase of flight. An air traffic controller's only job is to keep aircraft seperated in the air and on the ground. Controllers have no say in how an aircraft is flown.

As a pilot with multiengine instrument rating, it looks as if he is way beyond the max demonstrated crosswind component. You can see he tries to kick the rudder over and cannot keep the left wing up... We do not know if he HAD to make an attempt ie fuel is to low to go to an alternate. Kudos for going around, quite a few would have just given up. Wx looked horrible so I am guessing he/she had no options but to try.

Im in the military and i am stationed over here in germany. we had some crazy ass winds the past few days. cars blown over, trees and roots thrown into family quarters, construction sites demolished.. i wasnt surprised when i saw this video.

What is he going to do? go to another country? Or maybe he can fly around in the sky until he runs out of fuel and drops to the ground!! Over the weekend 8 ppl have died due to this storm which is spread over many countries in Europe.

what was the pilot supposed to do? blow off the ATC tower? I know there are wind speed indicators out near the runways, and if I'm correct, the ATC should have waved them off. Pilot does what he is told. Bravo for coming out of it unscathed!

The pilot does not have to do what he is told by the controller. The pilot in command is the final authority in every phase of flight. An air traffic controller's only job is to keep aircraft seperated in the air and on the ground. Controllers have no say in how an aircraft is flown.

I don't see him as a professional pilot!he shouldn't attempt to land at this time. less than a second and a disaster would happen

You're a moron and obviously not a pilot who has ever been caught in heavy winds. "Shouldn't attempt to land at this time" only works until the go-go juice is gone and then the plane WILL land whether the pilot is ready for it to or not.

As a pilot with multiengine instrument rating, it looks as if he is way beyond the max demonstrated crosswind component. You can see he tries to kick the rudder over and cannot keep the left wing up... We do not know if he HAD to make an attempt ie fuel is to low to go to an alternate. Kudos for going around, quite a few would have just given up. Wx looked horrible so I am guessing he/she had no options but to try.

There is no way the pilot should have attempted landing in 150 mph winds. He did a great job getting out of trouble but he put them in harms way. Everyone on board is lucky to be alive. Having been in a plane crash myself, (Continental Airlines 1992 NYC) I can tell you that most if not all of those people will be freaked out about flying forever.
