The war was actually in october of 2077, 1 year after the USA took back the Alaskan Pipeline from Communists, The chinese fired the first nuke, as they were begginning to lose the war.

And just so everyone is clear, they used every type of weapon and bomb there was, if they had solely used atomic and Nuclear bombs then there wouldn't even be a world left to play in, as there would be so much fallout that nothing would survive. I read the terminals and books found in fallout 3 :D
