My mother's parents were born in Finland, she grew up in The Upper Penisula of Michigan b4 meeting my father near Detroit, she died 2 months ago at age 79...Everybody Rock On!!!
@MrGutterslide- He can play it as fast as he wants. It's his song, and it's a good idea to play a song at a different speed depending on the mood of the audience etc. It doesn't have to sound just like the studio recording. But I agree, the sound is bad. It was probably good at the gig though, and the recording of it and the youtube compression screwed it to hell.
@MrGutterslide- I agree I like it slower. I love this song's energy, and I think it's best when played at a fast tempo (like the original) but at this speed it kinda loses some clarity.
@MrGutterslide You got it my friend. I saw him in the Winter of 1988 here in Edmonton.
I was pretty ripped but I swear there were times during the show where I thought I heard him playing two guitars at the same time. Johnny was phenomenal!!
@Starpass Hello! I saw him for the first time in a german "Rock-Palast-Night" in
April 1979 in Essen (together with Joe Paris and Bobby Torrello), and "...And Live" has been the first longplayer I ever bought (1971?). This man (and Muddy Waters!)
inspired me to start playing slide guitar. Thanks to them!
I saw Johnny this past September in NYC. He's half-crippled, bent over, 6 months older than God and while he didn't play "Mean Town Blues," he STILL blew out the back doors!!!
@XaurreauX I saw Johnny for the first time in '88. The band covered the album 'The Winter of '88. They played at the University theatre here in Edmonton. First up was a band that played Deep Purple music. They were awesome but everyone was waiting for Johnny. The washrooms were full of us young people smoking spliffs of hash and weed..and plenty of beer so when Johnny came on stage we were totally primed. The show was great..people hanging over the balcony pounding on the wall. It was great.
Johnny winter's talent when he stands there playing that guitar that's the best feeling there is ! Love you johnny Winter and will always do ROCK ON !!!
Yeah, not enough people know about that album. I would put it and the the first Columbia album "Johnny Winter" at the top of any list of Johnny's best. I had it on vinyl as "Austin, Texas". I now have it on CD. Great album from start to finish. I think that 'Tribute to Muddy' is my favourite track on the album.
@kalidas369 Meantown Blues Was on the Johnny Winter And recorded Live, album.
That album is with Rick Derringer on Guitar, Randy Jo Hobbs on Bass and Bobby Caldwell on the ole Drum kit. They were on the Heroin when the album was made.
If you don't believe me check out the picture on the inside of the album cover.
Rick and Johnny traded riffs and played off each other with Randy and Bobby holding down the bottom...Great album; and the best version of Mean Town Blues.
Yeah man u are right, best version of Mean Town Blues i ever heard was on that record, live recording..I might still have that LP somewhere around here!
I have no idea how many thousands of times I listened to Meantown Blues from the "Johnny Winter And, Live" album. It still gives me chills to listen to it.
I saw Johnny twice at MLG in the seventies, then at the Diamond in the late eighties. I don't know how I missed this show. Massey Hall?
I saw him earlier this year in Kingston. It is great to see him so mobile on this video, he has a tough time getting around now and is seated when he plays. He played brilliantly though. He was here again two weeks ago. I couldn't make that show, but some friends of mine went and said it was great. But, those seventies shows were incredible.
Johnny could blow the socks off jimi

@superlou1s - Sure he can! ...but for me: much TOO fast! And, by the way:
Anyone, who wants to listen to "It´s My Own Fault" at 380 bpm: do it! "De gustibus non est disputandum!"

@MrGutterslide I'm happy to read you are a student of the Blues.
Playing guitar takes practice, and lots of it.

There's a bit of Can't be Satisfied between Mean Town Blues and Rollin & Tumblin, too.

Sorry, I misread. Yes, it was on the Live album. I saw them in Cleveland in 1971.
Made loud to be played loud.
kalidas369 2 years ago
"Meantown Blues" wasn't on "Johnny Winter And."
It was on his first album, "The Progressive Blues Experiment:," recorded at the Vulcan Gas Company on Congress Ave. in Austin, Texas.
So was "Rollin and Tumblin." What a great album.
"Broke Down Engine" too.
