"FedEx Flight 80 was a scheduled flight from Guangzhou in China, to Narita, (near Tokyo), Japan. On March 23, 2009, the MD-11F (N526FE) crashed while attempting a landing in gusty wind conditions. The aircraft became destabilized at flare and touchdown resulting in an unrecovered "bounced" landing with structural failure of the landing gear and airframe, and came to rest off the runway, inverted, and burning fiercely. The captain and first officer, the jet's only occupants, were both killed."

@Hammer1995able It wasn't on a departure it was on approach. They say it was wind shear that interrupted the landing. It was coming in and wind forced it down prematurely and it bounced back into the air but without enough power to maintain altitude, it just slammed right back down into the runway but the second time it hit so hard that it rolled on its back. This isn't the first time it has happened to an MD-11 either.

This occurred because the MD11 has its COG further aft than comparable aircraft. This makes it more economical in the cruise, but less unforgiving in other circumstances; particularly landing. The aircraft landed hard and suffered oscillations. The crew may have been able to save in earlier in the landing by "holding off" or going around. This aircraft is taxing to fly. No landings are EVER the same. This was a competent crew caught in a situation they were unready for. RIP fellow aviators
