Yes, I see most closed in the 1980's during the Reagan years when he just about killed the country putting so many out of work and closing so many companies, then the 4 years of the 1st Bush. Hard to dig out of so deep a hole.
I remember when Arrow closed. They shut of their driver's fuel cards and left them stranded. Swift over rode their rider policy, and told us to pick them up, and we'de get them home, one way or another (hired a few in the process). That was low for them to do that, but we pitched in and got them home.
@179178 well if you remember the whole Arrow situation the owners were crooks who had swindled their owner-operators on their truck lease-purchase. you had people who had paid off their trucks getting repo notices because Arrow had pocketed the money or refinanced the trucks without the owners knowlege.
I drive for YRC doing P&D at terminal 814 here in Fresno, ca, and my dad drove for System 99 here to. They went out in the fall of 1985 not 1987. I also drove for Nation Ways (NW) back in 94/95 as a casual but got hired full time a Roadway Express in 95 first. Praise God for that Amen! Thanks for the video I loved it can't wait to show may dad. I'm sure he rembers all these companies.
Some of the greates meormey of my life were getting up early in the morning on saturday and going with me dad into work .... i would play in the truck while he fixed them he was a tech for trucking companys for 35 yrs it was an awesome thing,,, i am greatful too trucking companys..4-ever.. but i also hate them see my dad worked nite and i didnt get too see him much.. but the trucking always kept food on our table and a roof over my head so i am greatful
My dad work for ANR ADVANCED till 1999 when they shut down...Both my uncle worked for Yellow frieght and Roadway... Trucking companys have been good too my family. My grandpa also work for Wilson Freight.. Its all my family has ever done ,,,But is still sad too see so many of the company of the pasted gone now.. the great age of trucking is over now its all corp. and not family own RIP all past trucking companys
great video, I remember most of those companies. Look back at far things have came from the "old days".Arm-strong steering, air conditioning, elelctric widndsheild wiprers not vacuum. I'm glad to have been a part of it all
The biggest thing to shut down most of these carriers was that they would not maintain their equipment, No brakes, bad tires, worn out equipment an never updating their equipment. The Teamsters had little to do with it. Corporate profits going to bonuses and total neglect for truck safety. Colorado had over 800 trucks wrecked in one year due to bad brakes, bad tires, worn steering. UPS and Fed EX making it fine but they maintain their trucks.
very good video i remember a lot of those companies it is so sad to see that they are no longer in operation it makes me wonder what is going to happen in the future and what our future holds
@Gorilla196094 yep, do half the work, get ten times the pay & a company killing retirement package. use the union thugs to keep the competition from coming in. Corrupt, corrupt, corrupt.
@raginroadrunner Reagan was a great president, he saved this country. if only he could have taken us the whole way forward we wouldn't have these economic problems today.
@kdrapertrucker Reagan was not all there. He read from a prepared script. He did not establish US policy. Gerorge Schultz the Sec of state did. Schultz was the former head of Bechtel Corp, Reagan pushed for an unneeded 600 ship Navy which Bechtel built and now it sits unused and incomplete in San Francisco that will cost more to cut it up than it's worth. Reagan was a fake and a puppet of big business and now we have an unregulated banks problem that has broke the country.
@highway445 yes, damn shame the Union thugs don't beat the shit out of Independent truckers so that the union has a lock on freight. Competition is what did these companies in, as it should, if you refuse to compete, you go the way of the DODo.
i cant belive viking was aquired by fedex because a few years before that i had seen some green viking trailers at a train show at the cow palace in daly city but i decided to buy the swift trailers instead
Of course, lets NOT forget that some, if not MOST of these were MERGED out of existence..... by greedy companies who wanted a bigger share of the freight. Doesnt make sense to have two or three terminals in the same city. Others were not strong enough to survive the de-regulation.

i agree with you that UPS is the Union Pacific of trucking i just got to CF diecast trucks so one of them i set up with triples thanks for the video trucking history is a hobby of mine
Great video. The 4 that stick out with me are PIE, Overnite, CF, and Viking. I remember seeing the first 3 on the interstate or going through my town all the time. Plus seeing CF and Viking trailers on intermodal trains while out railfanning (i even have a Viking trailer on my model train layout) . Never thought of the chance they would disappear back then or i'd have gotten photos.
I swear to god UPS is the Union Pacific of trucking companies. Swallowing everybody up >:(
Watkins was a great company to work for. I was a dock worker about 10 years ago and they treated everyone great! I wish I wouldve stayed on full time...when they offered it to me.
God Bless Ya for the Video. But I have to tell ya that we Spector(Spector Red-Ball) families sure do miss the Somerset , Pa drivers inwhich my Daddy was a part of. I have to say we won't miss the mini Mack though. There are only 4 drivers still living in our Spector family in Bedford County, but we try to get together when we can. Dad (Spade) would be happy with the video. And thank you for the memories! (little Spade) lostbrook
Nice Job! try to find an old Dave Dudley song "Ain't no easy run" lots of these firms are mentioned-written by Tom T Hall early in his career-think that song would be a good fit.
I've watched three of these 'old timers' shows and haven't seen my old company. I drove for Navajo Freight Lines (the Blue Eyed Indian) as a local driver back in Chicago in the 70's. They were bought out by ABF.
Wow ! that brings back some good memories, ever remember Bulldog ? I think mostly flatbed-lumber and going way back Eazor ? sp ? back in my home town had a pretty big depot for them, sad to see them go.
Thank you from one freight hauler to another...brought back alot of memories watching your video. Hopefully this trend will stop..there are not too many left nowadays.
download the video on UTube to yer folder. Use Limewire or something simular, and download the songs, Dust in The wind, I'm On Fire, and Slip Sliding Away... then play the video, and then your player.... You will get a pretty close "picture".. the chosen songs this guy picked are the icing on the cake... too bad the copyright thing... which is sometimes too difficult to understand....
USF is not entirely out of business.. only USF RED STAR.. USF other branches are alive and well, so far... under the YRCW INC company (Yellow, Roadway, Holland, etc --the far a few between and left out there).... for now....
yep it about time we get a president like our man obama to help us and take care of the rules we need to help us and take care of us so we dont get poor no more! go obama ! help us folk.
I remember when Carter was changing the industry, My mother worked for Cooper Jarret & they could not compete then went to Dhorn and they closed 2 months later due to deregulation.. I have to Thank You Democrats, Your business ideas just plainly SUCK! I suggest you sell the White House to China and reform welfare because we are all about to be on it. Obama! JOKE! so far one year and Billions and billions spent on NOTHING!
Spartan was in there closer to the beginning. DH worked for Smith, PIE and ABF. I rememeber seeing many of the older ones on the highway, Hall was a local carrier that went out.
P.I.E. is up and running out of S. San Francisco Ca. I saw one of thier trucks at the Pilot in Bellemont Az. about a month ago. They have just a few trucks, this lady was riding with her husband and her son bought the name and the trailer logos are just like the old ones, with red Freightliners. Brought back some memories.
I heard them old school truckers in the 1980s were making in today's dollars .84 cents a mile compare to drivers today barely making .40 cents a mile. So today's driver's suppose to be making .84 cents a mile easy, but not.
It's realy great to someone to remember to make tributee video for companies whitch no longer exist. I realy appreciated for this video. Many big thankses.
So many good men.. so many good damn drivers, drivers that could run through snow, and bad weather, drivers that could keep you company and keep you awake on the CB with good conversation.. Good Teamster brothers.. This is sad, but a great tribute to all those men... Thank you!!!!!!
Some of the shutdown companies (Mclean/Delta, P.I.E., Milne, Lee Way, System 99, I.C.X., Transcon, Preston, CF, NW, Willig) should've merged or sold with current companies (Roadway, Yellow Lines, ABF, Saia Motor Trucking, CFI/Con-way). I like seeing those trucks, especially when hauling 28' doubles or triples.
Most of them companies closed while I was still a kid, but I'm sure my dad remember's most of these companies. It's just sad to know that a company closes and places other driver's out of work. I got laid off from a job I loved and it felt like the world was ending. I can just imagine how they felt. Nice to see them old trucks though!
Thank you for this.I worked for Overnite and now UPS Frt. Our trailers used to say "Our people make the difference." They don't anymore and I mean "they don't". :-(
This is a great video. I have been driving non stop for 25 years now. Back in the early days of my driving career,I ran with many of the drivers of many of these companies, all of which were much older than me at the time. They were great to talk with on the CB, they were all damn good men, and damn good drivers. Makes me sad to think of what happenned to them. Thanks a lot deregulation... you threw out the baby with the bathwater.
How sad is this, once all great companies. When you look at my resume, looks like I have worked for five carriers but it really was only two. Sure the unions didn't help but the management team doesn't either. I worked for USF when Yellow purchased them, their stock was $58.00 now down to $4.70 as of this writing.
The greedy teamster comment is right! After 14 years of being a teamster, you think they could pull some strings with a union carrier to get you a job... but they don't! Alvan Motor Freight can be added to this list as well. All USF Holland drivers be prepared, the writing is on the wall, the orange and white trucks are going to up on this tribute as well, sad to say. Hopefully I am wrong. Great Tribute Video!!
abferrara: You can also blame Jimmy Carter and the Democrats for deregulating the trucking industry in November 1979. Following deregulation, unionized carriers began to fall on their faces. In October 1999, Bill Clinton deregulated banking systems in the U.S. which has led to our economy falling apart today. The party of the middle class (Democrats) really knows how to stick it to the hearts of America.
As a Young truck driver of 35 yrs old, i really appreciate my roots of the trucking industry. i've been in the LTL industry 13 years now. hired by American Freightways in 1995, now Fedex Freight East. Great Tribute! hats off too all the senior drivers i met over my 13 yrs of LTL! would be nice to see my old colors from AF - rigs....i miss those red horses!!
Not too long ago a line driver gave me a list of 50 freight lines in 1980 and 50 freight lines in 2005. I think there were a grand total of three Yellow, Roadway and ABF that were still business then. Oddly enough I was looking for my former employer Gordon's Transport that went under in 1983 and then I went to work for Yellow. Also missing was Bowman a privately owned company.
thats rite he left out the BIGGEST PRIVATE FREIGHT LINE IN THE COUNTRY BOWMAN TRANSPORTATION OUTA GADSDEN ALABAMA.RALPH BOWMAN WAS THE SOLE OWNER OF THIS LTL COMPANY,I KNOW I WORKED THERE 18 YEARS AND IT WAS SAD WHEN THEY CLOSED THANX TO THE SORRY S.O.B J RAY HUFFMAN
No they are not.... the Gordon's I worked for was out of Memphis, TN... They were a family owned outfit that decided to shut the doors because they couldnt keep up with the competition after deregulation. Great company to work for but the ownership gave up too quickly.
Wow!! I worked for CF for 17 yrs. I miss the the red/green and all the friendships developed of the years. 6 mo after closing I went to work for Overnite, which of course now is UPS Freight.
Great video, I worked for 3 them (Lee Way,Was the #1 man in Detroit,Thought I was the cats ass,LOL Northwest,Overnite,Interviewed with Churchill And now with Holland. Who knows for how long. Not a very good track record.
Competition Sucks! Why can't we an Management get together and figure out one good system and improve it in an upward win win system we are now in such a downward spiral the working conditions make jumping over each other a practice that makes the whole industry suffer. I just hate seeing good things and fair working conditions deteriorate by young do gooders that think they can keep up their scabby pace forever. Keep strong,,, carry on.
Good video. You might want to check into what used to be Roberts Express. They are now Fed Ex Custom Critical. Another one that comes to mind is Thurston Truck Lines. I can't remember when they shut down.
hltibbs: Thurston was purchased by Brown Transport which shut down some time in the late eighties. During a period in the early 80's, Thurston was a sister subsidiary to Ryder/P.I.E under IU International.
Used to be a TransCon and CF yard in Tucumcari, NM, back in the late 70's, early 80's. Remember visiting grand mom's during the Summer and seeing all the truck's..... Fond memories.
I miss CF (Consolidated Freightways), NW (Nations Way Trucking), Dick Simon "Skunk" Trucking, Willig Trucking, Delta/McLean Trucking, P.I.E. (Pacific International Express), ICX (Illinois California Express), Lee Way and C.M.E. (California Motor Express).

The YRC outfits may be next. Their stock is currently trading under $2.00 a share. Bankruptcy is brewing.

So many good men.. so many good damn drivers, drivers that could run through snow, and bad weather, drivers that could keep you company and keep you awake on the CB with good conversation.. Good Teamster brothers.. This is sad, but a great tribute to all those men... Thank you!!!!!!

Sad to see so many go over the years. Nice walk down memory road.

I really enjoyed that.I didnt realize how many Freight outfits went out.Sure brings back memories. Big Thanks!!

WOW! makes you think, whats happening. Is there going to be just 1 big company in the end. Scary. Thanks for posting, great job.

How sad is this, once all great companies. When you look at my resume, looks like I have worked for five carriers but it really was only two. Sure the unions didn't help but the management team doesn't either. I worked for USF when Yellow purchased them, their stock was $58.00 now down to $4.70 as of this writing.

I miss my job at Overnite... I was "forced out" in '95 :(

You will be able to add Oak Harbor Freight Lines to this soon if the Vander pol's don't come come back to reality soon.

Being a trucker for 29 years, it was bittersweet to watch this. Kind of makes me wonder: The only 3 names in LTL, will be UPS, Yellow, & Fed Ex.
Gregandmichele 3 years ago
The Yellow name may not be one of the big three if they continue to struggle financially. I think it may Be FedEx Freight Ups Freight and Conway!
kennethcordero21 3 years ago
Thanks for the memories, you forgot about American Freight being bought by FedEx also.

You can thank the greedy corupt Teamsters for the loss of so many good companies...

abferrara: You can also blame Jimmy Carter and the Democrats for deregulating the trucking industry in November 1979. Following deregulation, unionized carriers began to fall on their faces. In October 1999, Bill Clinton deregulated banking systems in the U.S. which has led to our economy falling apart today. The party of the middle class (Democrats) really knows how to stick it to the hearts of America.

due to fuel prices

Not too long ago a line driver gave me a list of 50 freight lines in 1980 and 50 freight lines in 2005. I think there were a grand total of three Yellow, Roadway and ABF that were still business then. Oddly enough I was looking for my former employer Gordon's Transport that went under in 1983 and then I went to work for Yellow. Also missing was Bowman a privately owned company.
thekarachikid 3 years ago
thats rite he left out the BIGGEST PRIVATE FREIGHT LINE IN THE COUNTRY BOWMAN TRANSPORTATION OUTA GADSDEN ALABAMA.RALPH BOWMAN WAS THE SOLE OWNER OF THIS LTL COMPANY,I KNOW I WORKED THERE 18 YEARS AND IT WAS SAD WHEN THEY CLOSED THANX TO THE SORRY S.O.B J RAY HUFFMAN

i dont know if there the same company but gordons is still in turlock, ca.
khtruckn 3 years ago
No they are not.... the Gordon's I worked for was out of Memphis, TN... They were a family owned outfit that decided to shut the doors because they couldnt keep up with the competition after deregulation. Great company to work for but the ownership gave up too quickly.
thekarachikid 3 years ago
Wow!! I worked for CF for 17 yrs. I miss the the red/green and all the friendships developed of the years. 6 mo after closing I went to work for Overnite, which of course now is UPS Freight.

I can't remember when they shut down.
hltibbs 3 years ago
hltibbs: Thurston was purchased by Brown Transport which shut down some time in the late eighties.
