  • This lady is definitely a legend. She didn't care about being embraced by the Pop audience, she was an R&B artist and stayed TRUE to it. She didn't NEED to cross over and didn't try. She was more R&B than most R&B artists.

She was one of the first PEOPLE to Rap, not just women or "white" women.. I seen someone say her style of "flow" was actually before its time.

Vanilla what? Beastie huh? 3rd umm.? Em. who? LOL!

  • love love love her music. she has a unique voice that is recognizable anywhere

  • man tenna had a bad voice!

  • One of the most underrated R&B singers of all time!

  • @aldeb456 I heard that! !! Teena will always be my all time favorite artist!!! Under-rated indeed, but not to us fans who can recognize and appreciate untouchable talent!!! RIP Teen!! :*-(

  • Rip...Teena, I will never forget you..you're an inspiration to anyone black or white...I love you

  • Teena I miss u so much. I wish so many other white girls in music would start to not rely on sex and a sex driven career. We in the blk community always endorsed he because of he talent. Her hits like Square Biz get so much play at so many blk cook outs.

  • @newgondiwatergate Why just put it all on the white girls?! Hell as a Black woman I'm sick of seeing Black women in the music industry rely on their sexuality instead of talent in the music business! As a matter of fact, a case can be made that Black women are leaders of this "hyper sexed" image in the music industry!

  • @kanuri No,that case cant be made.ALL kinds of artist use their sexuality in the music buisness.Black women are certainly not the leaders of the hypersexed image now or ever..

  • @cherise1946 I'm sorry but unless you have been living in a bubble...all I see are young Black women in these over sexed images! It appears most if not all the top Black female artists have shown their ass..literally..and I don't understand how you are over looking Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, Keri Hilson, Niki Minaj...and Lord I'm not gonna even name the video "vixens" who are sprawled all over these videos ass out and legs spread! So yes a case can be made and it makes me sad as a Black woman.

  • @kanuri All you see is black women?I havent been living in a bubble that's how I have been able to observe black males and other nonblacks spread all over posters, magazines, books, movies, television and other forms of media especially during and after the free loving 70's.I'm not overlooking anyone or anything.Black women do not lead in using their sexuality as I stated before, all kinds of people do this, black women ARE participants.

  • @cherise1946

"Black women do not lead in using their sexuality as I stated before, all kinds of people do this, black women ARE participants."

That is BS, have you seen some of Janet Jackson & Salt N Pepa videos over the past 20 years? How about Lil Kim the past 15 years? Hell, how about Beyonce the past 10 years? These black women are hardly participants. As of today, Beyonce has master the art of getting the masses to look at her in a over sexualized way.

  • @MrJuly1990ish My reply to you stays the same.

  • @MrJuly1990ish Fail.

  • @kanuri Tell the truth! I just gave you a thumbs up.....if sistas bothered to learn their history or herstory(specifically the story of "Hottentot Venus") they would be less likely to these nasty things.

  • @kanuri I agree with you. It's not just white chicks it's black etc. Women today need to show class and respect for themselves. I'm a male and I have to admit. I think Teena set the pace and did it with class and respect. Teena was hot looking in her day and didn't act like or look like a slut. She just let her talent speak for itself.. Miss you Teena can't beleive your gone over a year now. RIP!!!

  • I love you teena marie! You were truly AHEAD your time! RIP!!!

  • Comment removed

  • She was definately a 'Soul Sister'. She will never be forgotten. Her music will never die.

  • Thanks so very much for posting!! I will always love her so much...and I can NEVER understand when people don't appreciate her amazing talent!!!

  • Teena I love you!!!!!!

  • There is no such thing as Lady GaGa, Madonna or Pink, if there had not been a Teena Marie who came before them....think about it

  • @MisterCrazyLegs Your right about Gaga and Pink but your reaching on Madonna. Madonna was playing in clubs in the late 70's in New York. She came out around the same time as Tina

  • @liacashmere58 yea, but the difference between Madonna and Teena is that Marie had a record deal in the late70s/early 80s...Madonna, did not, and Teena also had a hit...Madonna did not. Im simply saying, as I would with any "door openner", that a white chick like Teena, with an edge and a whole lot of imagination, always makes it easier for those coming behind her. Madonna had street credibility before she knew she had it, and Teena Marie was the catalyst for white chicks getting "black props'

  • @MisterCrazyLegs Oh than yeah I agree. I thought you were trying to say Madonna owed her career to Teena cause that would sound crazy. Teena's mostly known in the blk community. while madonna appeals to more white gays

  • @MisterCrazyLegs The major and most extensive difference between Tina Marie and Madonna is the R&B mainstream. Not too many white acts can penetrate R&B music and have longevity. Tina Marie made it possible for people to enjoy her music and forget about her color because she sounded like one of us. Madonna will never penetrate that barrier...she lacks the talent and the sound.

  • @MisterCrazyLegs

The same can be said about "The Average White Band" they too were the catalyst for white dudes (bands) getting "black pros." I was also shocked to find out that AWB is not even from America, but from Scottland!

  • @MisterCrazyLegs agreed and Madonna doesn't play any instruments last time I checked either

  • Wow. Thanks for posting this unsung of Teena Marie. Watching this really makes me appreciate Teena so much more. Always a fan of her music but to see how she never turned away from Rick James or MoTown..no matter how they treated her, makes her so very special. She was a treasure.

  • Whoa. . .her daughter is BAAAAD.

  • LMFAO... Rick James beating her WHITE ass. Be real Rick even said Teena kept him in line. Teena might have been small but she didn't take shit even from her record label Motown. People crack me up you don't even really know facts about Teena. Just talking shit biz that's all you idiots. Can't wait until Septemeber 11 Bobby Womack and Teena did a remake of with you I'm born again. Betcha it's going to be off the chain. So all you Lady T haters. Shut the Fu$7 up!! Tee was soulful and very talented

  • She was unique and soulful and now sings in heaven, great documentary.

  • one of the most greatest and the best to ever open herr mouth. Lady T is my hero, and i'm working on singing cassanova brown more and more everyday. this is for her. love you soooo much and may you, rick, marvin, tammi, and the rest of them are up there partyin yall asses off.

  • The only thing that stopped Lady Ts career was death, square square biz. I will always love her..

  • I see that even in 2011 there are low class people who feel the need to focus on the color of someone's skin. I would address each of the losers below who don't think before they speak and just let their ignorance and lack of education show, but it would be a waste of time to talk to those people, since people who speak in such a way never become any better than they are today. It just proves one thing stupid comes in every color. Teena will leave a musical legacy, what will you losers leave?

  • How could one person NOT like this documentary?!!!!! >.<

  • i dont think she can sing

  • @Scorpianslady23 Why is that?

  • @motherboard555 because its very screechy, unstable, yodely and really just all over the place. i know shes supposed to be like the first white lady with that black sound but i dont feel like she does. christina aguilera jessie j, adele etc they have black soulful voices that actually sound great. i never thought teena marie was a good singer but i do like Ooh la la a WHOLE LOT!!!

  • @Scorpianslady23 And Christina Aguilera forgets the lyrics to the National Anthem in front of millions and stubles drunk on stage at the music awards show. I have heard Aguilera scream--not sing--her songs.

  • @turntableone Her forgetting lyrics doesnt have anything todo with tge sound of her voice. CA actually sounds like a "black chick" when she sings. Teena Marie cant sing and she sounds likes shes yodeling all the time. i dont like the sound of her voice. yes CA scream sings but even when she does she still sounds good

  • @Scorpianslady23 I think forgetting the lyrics has everything to do with her as an artists because how in the world can you forget the National Anthem. You had all that time to practice that song...CA could have asked for a prompter but didn't. Choose to make a fool out of herself in front of millions.

Teena is not yodeling..i can testify to that but you think when CA scream sings that she is in perfect tune? Fingers on a chalkboard. CA doesn't sound like a black woman at all to me.

  • @turntableone ok thats your opinion sweetie

  • @Scorpianslady23

Can't sing---puh-lease--I beg to differ because I grew up hearing Lady T---exactly how much of her music have you listened to? Hell, yeah, she could sing---just because a singer screeches a lot and has weird whacked out vocal idiosyncrasies dosen't mean they can't sing---a LOT of singers I've liked over the years--including Alanis Morrisette---screeched and hollered a lot, but it didn't lessen their vocal talent. Now Christina and Adele ARE the bomb, but so was Teena, flat out!

  • @seanfg1972 ok sweetie thats YOUR opinion. i beg to differ. alanis sounds terrible to me too. i do like "I need you lovin" and "Ooh lala" but other than that i cant get through her songs because of all those ugly sounds

  • @Scorpianslady23 Yeah and I can put my opinions on here. Just like you did.

  • @seanfg1972 umm i know that. youre the one that came at me for giving my opinion

  • @Scorpianslady23 Sorry yours was. UGH

  • @seanfg1972 LOL and that too is your opinion

  • @motherboard555 i dont know where my comment went

  • @Scorpianslady23 OMFG.... Are you deaf... O.k. how many singer hit the c6 notes etc. You must be into Christina, Lady Gaga. I know it's your opinion but your wacked out on crack. This lady has a powerful voice and can sing r&b, rock, Jazz etc. It's your opinion but for real your out of touch!!! My opinion this lady had talent, wrote, produced and arranged all her music. To boot played many instruments. Gee does Christina!! Keep your opinion to yourself and respect the decease!! RIP Lady T #1

  • @vumann40 how are you gonna tell me to keep my opinion to myself but its ok for you to give yours?? but because i dot agree with you you call me out of my name and get mad. like you are really stupid and all i can do is laugh at you. BTW i do not like Lady Gaga at all

  • Respond to this video... oh yeah and another BTW just because someone can hit a high note doesn't mean that it sounds good. remember that

  • @Scorpianslady23 Your right you think she can't sing is because we all know she can sang bitch!!!

  • @vumann40 LMAO!!!!!! how lame are you to get mad at me because of my opinion? You are a loser LOL but it was funny i must admit

  • @vumann40 Wow and youre 44 acting like that LOL!!! old as hell

  • @Scorpianslady23 I agree with you.I didnt like her voice either,i think her voice sounds like a bunch of cats screeching and howling.

  • @cherise1946 LOL

  • i am soooo..sad about her passing and i am one who does not feel that way about white folks...no racism intended..just the way i am...but this woman..dang

  • R.I.P TM

  • so happy she wasnt racsist

  • MISS U GIRL!!!

  • No mention of Marie's 1986 album, "Emerald City" in this documentary. Shocked to see that she was living in a one bedroom apt. in the ghetto after she made those four albums on Motown.

  • No mention of Marie's 1986 album, "Emerald City" in this documentary.

  • i still cnt believed she died... dang

  • R•I•P.....£ady T

  • I would have loved to see her live. You don't realise how wonderful an experience that would be until it's too late : (

  • Am I the only person who hates her voice? No disrespect, but it sounds like she's screaming! I guess ya'll like that. lol

  • @3864267 Clean out your ears.

  • @JaJr07 if my ears were any cleaner I'd have a head ache from the sreeching lol

  • @3864267 each to their own I guess, but boy are you wrong : )

wow this is a good documentary of Teena, I've seen her atleast 5xs in concert, and been next to her while at other venues, last concert ive seen of hers was at Pomona fair last year, can't believe she's gone, she will always be remembered.

  • I remember when Teena talked about the Brockhart Initiative with S2S magazine. I was truly surprised. I truly miss her

  • In Actuality She is/was a Great Musical Artist no matter what she looked like on the outside, I mean she gave Us a Bakers Dozen (13) Full-Length Records/Albums, so We will always have her Infinite-Sound with Us Forever just like Luther and Rick. Rest-in-Peace Lady Tee.

  • The difference between the singers then and the singers now is that the Teena Marie's and others like her sing from their soul.

  • @MultiEightiesgirl so TRUE.

  • Manyek, thanks for uploading this!!

  • My favorite Teena Marie songs of all time are. "Square Biz"; "Fire and Desire"; "Young Love"; "Still in Love"; and "Portugese Love" R.I.P. Lady T, you were one of the best.

  • My favorite Teena Marie songs of all time are. "Square Biz"; "Fire and Desire"; "Young Love"; "Still in Love"; and "Portugese Love"

  • I have to admit that she was the first white woman I loved who made me realize that love and music comes in every shade and color of the rainbow. I know your up in heaven still fighting with Rick.

  • @jazz1829

You Know Rick James is up in HEAVEN Beating the fuck out of her Ass. Oh the Good Times! Beat that little white ass for the homies, Brotha Rick!!

  • @otraxo Really inapproriate with a side of ignorant!

  • @kanuri The truth of the matter is many people seem to have a fantastical idea about what happens when people die. Like Rick James being in heaven and being such a nice, caring, and loveable person who never abused a person.

Its unfortunate that people like Rick James & Chris Brown can get away with acting out violently.

Get Over it Kanuri - nothing i said even with the foul language was ignorant - you are the definition of ignorant if you are one of those fantasy believing jack asses.

  • @jazz1829 "I know you're up in heaven still fighting with Rick" LOL : -)

  • RIP Lady T

  • WOW love you Teena

  • Loving this... So Loving and Missing our Lady Tee! Our Ivory Queen of Soul Lady Teena Marie - Rest in Peace Lady Tee - God Bless you, The Familias and Legion of Loyal Fans!

  • @jrashad05 Beast is right, 666.Learn to write, like these others on here.

  • Her Mom recommended that she marry Rick James, she should have said..."Mom, he's a freaking pimp!!!"

  • Love you Lady Tee! There will NEVER be another! Vanilla Child forever.

  • thanks soooooooooooo much! i love teena

  • @4Ebsus No Teena was an artist, she wrote, produced, arranged, and played instruments. The Ivory Queen of Soul. I really liked McDonald but he couldn't get down like Lady T! Black people claimed Teena from the very beginning!

  • I am so sick of them keep saying "white girl, white girl" ! Who cares, she was good singer.

  • @brajames1 what you're saying is very true, and i agree. but you have to think, its very hard for white artists to have a great influence with a majority of black people. its hard for white people to be kinda included with black people to the point there is no color discrimination.

  • @jussmittin

Nigga Honky you said it right. Race an't nothing but a Food - my lovely Chocolate White Cracker.

  • @otraxo okay......is it really necessary to use those derogatory racial slurs?

  • @jussmittin Yeah cause I love you and what I said was so over the top that if it is taken seriously by anyone, then they should be shot on site.

  • @brajames1 I agree with you big time. I am a white man but never thought of anyone being black or white. Music is what comes from inside. Teena was truely a gift. I was into her since her first lp Wild And Peaceful. They just put the Lady T cd and Irons In The Fire back in print, I just ordered 2 copies of each on Amazon. I had the pleasure of meeting Teena 2xs in Boston. She was so down to earth and so sweet!! I just wish the industry gave her the credit she never received. RIP LADY T miss u!!

  • @vumann40 So true

  • @brajames1

AMEN BROTHER that White Bitch can sang baby baby. Oh LORD JESUS, OH LORD JESUSSSSSSSS. Sang that song White Girl!!!

  • @otraxo Very funny. By the way I'm being sarcastic.

  • @brajames1

BTW - I think you liked it and would find the humor if you would let yourself go a bit, then again you might be uptight and overly concerned when you see an expletive on the screen.

  • r.i.p Teena Marie

     her voice was just magic

  • She was excellent.....she's truly missed....there will NEVER be another.

  • 800 views and counting :-)*~~~R.I.P. Lady T

  • made me tear up..she seemed to be a very sweet woman.

  • Thanks for providing this segment of Unsung, Manyek. Like so many other fans, I am still reeling from Lady T's sudden death. I find myself listening to her songs and allowing her music to serve as a sanctuary. Without a doubt, Teena Marie was a genius and gift from a higher power.

  • Miss you Teena Marie, you left too, too soon :(

  • R.I.P. Teena
