Just look how he dresses,THAT is just ONE sign of how we have gone DOWN.He dressed like gentelman, nowdays a young person comes on tv,and they are dressed like a bum or a gang member.
This fascinating August 1959 episode featured Orin Long, first senator of newly admitted State of Hawaii. Born in Kansas, Long still remains the ONLY (pardon the expression) White Guy Hawaiian senator.
I find Dorothy's question at 2:37 especially interesting. At that time, musicians used both phrases as musical-slang jargon. Music expert Dorothy knew Rick would know the answer, even if Daly did not. And note that in the next round, she identifies him right on the nose.
I use this clip in teaching my English composition classes.
This sequences ties to Arlene's identification of Fabian (available on YouTubia) 11 weeks later. Are you a singer? LOL and how!
August 1959: Rick, age 19, was one of the youngest mystery guests, ever. Enjoyed at this point stature equal to Presley and Anka in showbiz. ( 2:18 > ), looks beautiful, especially when he bites his lip.
Author Max Schulman ("Dobie Gillis") asked witty questions. G-T should have used him more often.
LIGHTWEIGHT???/??? Not on your life! He had major hits and wrote music that was covered by many other performers. His contributions to the era were equally important to those of Elvis!
I feel fortunate that I had a chance to see him perform in 1973 in Louisville, Kentucky with the Stone Canyon Band. One of the pioneer Country Rock stars.
Even though he was a great singer, he was so down to earth and respectful Even Daly complimented him. That shows that he was true class. Nice that he wore a suit. Today's so called rock stars would come to a show wearing torn jeans and their hair gelled like they escaped from a horror house. Too bad class has diasppeared along with morals.
What a nice young man he was. I liked him in "Rio Bravo", he handled himself very well in the company of such greats as John Wayne, Walter Brennan, and Dean Martin. Died way too young.
Rick seemed very shy, quiet and reserved..I also noticed a sadness lingering beneath...It must've been extremely hard for him to have grown up with his real family on tv..The lines between reality & fiction must've been crossed at some point during that period, perhaps many times..What a weird way to grow up, with your tv family being your real life family and your real life family being your tv family..I wonder what psychological damage, if any, that caused..His brother-in-law was Mark Harmon.
Omg I never came across this vidoe before!!! I love it!!! I use to watch reruns of this game show with my mom but never knew Rick was on there! Poor Ricky, he looks so shy, but oh so cute!!! =)

This, as example, this young man of 28(?)..
..to say to him, STOP, WAIT, you are going to become involved with a horrible woman who will do all she can to take everything from you and destroy you, manipulate you!
You will do drugs, become alcoholic, sad, destroyed, and lost...
..and alone within an airplane accident at only 43..sigh..
@Pectoris4 - I so clearly remember watching the late news on New Years Eve and hearing about the crash. I was chilling. Yes, I thought about that also. However, before he was taken, he did live a full life leaving us all some wonderful music and memories as an actor. His numbers during Ozzie & Harriet are considered forerunners to the music video, although his were much cleaner. RIP Rick. Thanks for posting.
@ShadyPines7 HAHAHAHHAHHHAHAHAA!!!!! you mean back in the good old days when they married seven times and stunk all the time of cigarettes and booze and abused prescription pills...
@ShadyPines7 oh yeah there were some real fox e mamas back then but if you met them they would all stink of cigarette smoke and booze. and the bleach blond women would look terrible.
also their pussies would actually be pussies, which are furry not BALD.
Ozzie & Harriet had only 2 boys but if they had more children, those kids would be just as handsome as Rick and David. Unfortunately, when a guy has a great voice and is also gorgeous, his looks get the publicity and he's never taken seriously--even nowadays. It was only after Rick was much older that people realized his music was a lot better than they wanted to admit at the time. Rick has always been one of my favorite singers. RIP Rick!
I notice he signed his name as Rick, but they put 'Ricky' on the TV screen. Ozzie and Harriet had been on as mystery guests, too. Not sure why John Daly gave the names backwards, possibly old-fashioned way of giving the woman's name first, just a guess. but, Daly was the news director and anchor for ABC-TV from 1950-1960, so he was in a way promoting a show on the then-struggling ABC network. Rare for a TV newscaster to be allowed to host an entertainment program on another network, CBS.
I loved Rick Nelson. I grew up watching him on tv and it was like a family member had died when he passed away. There will NEVER be another Ricky Nelson.
I grew up with Ozzie & Harriet and their sons David & Ricky by watching their TV Show weekly like millions of other teenagers of tha era. Ricky had everything going for him during his TV, Movie and Singing career. I don't think he had a great voice but he had many hit records along with his 3 million sellers and many feel that he was a Good Lookin' as he was Talented. I agree. Another great talent lost at a young age. RIP Rick! Ron--Highway Stars Magazine
Daly wasn't allowed to mention shows on other networks ("Ozzie and Harriet" was on ABC, as was Daly in his job as a vice president and news anchor).

What a cool old clip!!!! Rick was a great entertainer and decent human being. He struggled somewhat with drugs but what are all the rest of us struggling with????? Kenny C.
@nerdflanders8710 : Yeah, only if I were male however you're one to talk listening to that KC and the Sunshine bag and YOU have the gall to call someone a Fag? Mary, get your shit together.
@twilson11208 KC is a talented songwriter I don;t care if likes to kiss men, I"m a musician and I like good music.
Not sure why I assumed you were male.....any hoo.....Why do you think people were great looking back then?? Could it be because there wasn't as much junk food as there is nowadays.
Ps Im no fag , I would certainly tap you. I mean again.
@nerdflanders8710 : My reason for believing that people were better looking back then are just looking at the old movies of the 40's and 50's. Perhaps it was their style of dressing but then you don't have anyone looking as close to Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth, Clark Gable nowadays. Just for the record I"m 20 yrs old and am fascinated by these stars. At any rate...I like KC and the Sunshine band and was just messing with you but you're so foul saying you would "tap" me. Just foul.
@twilson11208 yes well I was just messing with you too hahaha.although your'e quite a nice looking girl. I would date you.
Anyway there are stil some nice looking wholesome women these days. Amy Smart is really beautiful, so is Scar Jo. Sandra Bollocks is a terrible actress. Taylor Swift is very attracive. sometimes the clothes and hair in the old days was not that great. with those beehive haircuts they were terrible.
@nerdflanders8710 : Out of that lot you mentioned I would go with Amy Smart and Sandra Bullock. Scar Jo ..yuck..Taylor Swift ..too scrawny, then again it's from a female opinion. However, those beehive hairstyles were from the 60's and you're right, the style in that era for the most part was pretty busted. I'm partial to the styles of the 30's-50's. BTW, thank you for your compliment, best of luck in your career as a musician, and stay out of trouble.
Harriet and Ozzie? You flip flopped it. It's Ozzir and Harriet. That's like saying Allen and Burns. Or Hardy and Laurel. Or Costello and Abbott.
